nutnut (846.4 days ago) like Robin said, just bc they can say the words doesnt mean they actually understand. So its a tricky thing. having your child evaluated early on is the best thing you can do for him. i waited and listened to everyone around me, including two different pediatricians, and i have yet to get any real Dx for my daughter. she gets speech therapy in school and learning support and well. she`s 7 and talks like she`s 4. she has difficulty pronouncing, but she can read and write on a lower end first grade level. (shes in 1st grade btw). the evaluation was done by early intervention at about 4, while i was concerned by around 2. i wish i had pushed harder. The wait list for an approved developmental pediatrican (which my insurance covers only certain dr.s ) is almost 2 years. ive been on the list now for about a year and a half waiting for an appointment. its good to get things going as soon as you notice something not right. my daugter repeated lots of words, but she couldnt retrieve them later on her own. she even repeated spanish words from dora, with no real understanding of them. so while i may have had a 3 year old counting to 10 in spanish, she couldnt count to 10 in english, and she didnt have any idea what counting really was. if you asked her a question `are you hungry?` she would just repeat `hungry` even if she wasnt hungry. she would just take the tail end of whatever you said and repeat it. she`s alot better now but it took time. alot of her tantrums and behavior issues around age 3-4 was bc she couldnt communicate her needs so it was due to frustration. they also taught her some signs to use, and showed us how to lable our home to make things easier for her. anyway, the earlier the better to get the evaluation, and always always trust your own gut feelings. =)
nmck (846.4 days ago) My son was evaluated for speech as part of his Early Intervention evaluation. He so far measures fine for speech, it is his gross motor skills that are delayed. But I wanted to comment to let you know getting our son evaluated was the best choice we ever made. Thank goodness we did not just wait and see, since he has been getting therapy weekly for the past several months!
IvysMomma (846.5 days ago) My daughter turns 2 on december 27th and i am waiting til then to see if she starts talking much more and if she doesnt im going to get her evaluated. She repeats things when she feels like it and she talks along with the tv but when it comes to talking on a regular basis she really doesnt. My daughter sounds ALOT like your son cncmom. SHE NEVER STOPS MOVING!!!!She started crawling before she was even 6 months and was walking by 10 just so she could get into stuff. She is constantly climbing to the top of EVERYTHING and nothing stops her. Her name is ivy and i just read that the word ivy is from an old english word meaning climber lol, maybe i should have named her something different lol.
RobinG (846.5 days ago) (()) :) So glad you are bringing him ~ one thing I learned with my son is that there is a difference between vocabulary and language. Hunter can say many many words but to use words in language he is significantly behind. Many say to me oh he is fine he can say so many words and it takes some time for them to understand that langauge and speech is about using words into communication. Using words ina conversation with a person back and forth. Not just how many words they've said. Once I explain it they finally get it. Hope all goes well!
cncmom (846.5 days ago) Thanks for all the comments. We have an appointment on Tuesday for him to be evaluated. He will be 2 on the 27th and maybe says 15 words if that. He makes tons of sounds but never `talks` on a consistent basis. His 2 best words are bye bye and mine. He is a go getter and very physical (running, jumping, climbing, throwing balls, hitting of the tee, kicking, etc.) but when it comes to sitting down to read a book, do a puzzle, etc. he is just not interested. I also signed him up for a program we have in Missouri called Parents as Teachers. They will help us get the help we need if he does need therapy and it will be free.
munchkinsmommie (846.5 days ago) My son was eval at 3yo and started therapy soon after. He is now 6 1/2 and his speech teacher says this will be his last year. He is doing so well. He has a slight lisp(sp?) but she said he should out grown it once he loses baby teeth and his jaw grows more with adult teeth. His ped at the time suggested it. He was my first so I did not know he was behind. He his main problem was with ST,CH sounds. He made up words that meant the same such as turney for stir. Yes, also we went thru several hearing tests. His hearing tests finally came back he could hear fine. So I told the therapist, so I guess he is just ignoring mommy. Also, since he qualified for speech therapy it was done thru the public school. So he was taken once a week to the local elementary school for therapy until he was there for Kindergarten. I am amazed at the difference it has made.
RobinG (846.6 days ago) My son plus many I know ~ The earlier the eval the better. My son was evaluated overall at 8 months but speech was really gotten into around 12-14 months. An eval is very beneficial for peace of mind. My opinion to any mom is Dont let anyone tell you they will be fine or will catch up UNLESS they are a trained specialist. Confirming or ruling out is far better then waiting it out to see then discovering there was an issue and wishing you`d called earlier and lost precious therapy time. Early intervention is covered in the US for free til age 3 if a delay is confirmed. Our speech therapist is incredible!! And we use sign, another amazing tool for language ~ many tots get frustrated and show behavior issues and turns out to be a communication/language issue and once helped gets better. Get a hearing test from a specialist too in addition to the Peds office. Many speech issues can be the result of hearing concerns.
HeCallsMeChula (846.6 days ago) the first time i had my son evaluated for speech he was a little older then one an he was not saying anything at all really..come to find out he had a short tounge an had to have surgery..he has had speech therapy for almost 3 yrs now an is going to be 4 in november an just started talking alot more maybe about 6 months ago..so if you think your child needs a speech eval go for what your heart believes.
