RobinG (840.2 days ago) Those are two seperate issues ~ not having a safe simple test that is proven to be effective and comparing it to a vac that is still very new and with risks is not the same thing and even remotely comparable ~
love.nora (840.4 days ago) Not to make a contorversy but all of this talk about whats good for the mom and whats good for the baby...here is a question for you...how many of you who are currently prego have gotten the H1N1 shot. There is no doc as far as I know that is not pushing prego woman to get it due to the fact woman who are prego are dropping like flies due to low immune systems etc. 3 in 24/hr ended up in ICU on breathalizers here in my small city. Plz dont take it as being rude but you really cant expect for everyone to say just caus ethey say it is best for the mom and baby everyone is going to agree....just a thought :D
RobinG (840.7 days ago) Have you considered a new doc? My doc gave me the script and I filled it and drank at home and went to lab in time to get blood drawn. So never had to sit and wait an hour. A friend of mine had GD and she didnt have those symptoms either becuase they caught it early enough. I`ve had 3 babies and the first I was on moriphine because of a c section but that was 14 years ago. Neither of my last two were. I`m sorry you went through all that but I still believe the test is safer ~ best wishes ~
love.nora (840.8 days ago) I do not feel hat if I decide not to do this test that I am not thinking of the safety of my child. Since becoming prego I have lost almost 15lbs, which is healthy for me. I started to eat healthier and make better choices in my diet. I have herd of stories in the news and some on this site of woman being tested and or their babies and being called out to family services for doing things they have never done. Frankly I do not want to be tested if I do not `need` to be. My doc is going to make me drink the stuff in the office and sit there and wait for an hr (yawn that sux). I have done a bit of research and found the symptoms of having GD and I have not had any of them (ie: blurred vision, excess weight gain, extreme hunger and thirst..) I am not one for doctors and believing everything they say to me. (Doc told me my son had allergies and to put him on allergy meds...found out later he had the flu!) My first pregnancy they did whatever they wanted to me during my labor as well even tho I had told them no, because they felt it was for the best but it wasnt what I wanted. In the end I ended up so drugged up on morphine that I couldnt move my body and they dropped me on the floor cause they expected me to walk. I want to just go through this as natural as I can without all the medical procedures and testing. I am thinking about myself and my baby by making the decision to follow my motherly instincts.
canadababy (840.8 days ago) You don`t always have signs of GD if you have it, the test is important for that reason alone. You say you did some research, did you also learn all the complications for your baby that can come about if you do have untreated GD? Personally I wouldn`t consider not having it done, it`s what`s best for you and your baby`s health :)
Str8 As (840.8 days ago) With my third, I `failed` the 1hr by two points. I refused to do the three hour test ( I had my own reasons of why; no need to explain). It was just assumed I had it and I tested my sugars everyday... If I would have refused to do it this time, my dr would have assumed I had it again and really I didn`t `have` to take it, but I did. I would do the 1hr at least. It is better to know something than not! Just my opinion. However, no one can force you to test for anything!
mommyagain3 (840.8 days ago) I think the test is very necessary! I have had 2 babies, and while I have never tested positive for GD, I did have big babies. These test are to help you and baby have a safe pregnancy and delivery. My last baby was over 9 lbs , and we both almost died in childbirth due to his size, the ultrasound showed he was only 7 lbs. My dr. is m onitoring me and baby this time very close and I have had the test 3 times, but looks like I am having another big baby, but no GD. I would never forgive myslef if i didnt take some simple test to ensure the safety and health of my baby! What if you had it and didnt know and you had one of those Dr. that didnt give you another ultrasound and your baby was to big to deliver and something went wrong! Sorry, but not going to happen to me, people are just to lazy and dont care these days! Whats an hour of your time!!!
heathert (840.8 days ago) Robin-I have also noticed that too. Comments that the US only does things for money but if certain tests were not done and there was a bad outcome it would be the opposite comments- the Dr does not care and did not do all he could do.
shesxchaotic (840.8 days ago) Why refuse it? Is it worth the risk? I don`t think it`s worth putting myself and/or my baby in danger considering how simple it is. They sent me home with the drink. I drank it an hour before my appt and then had a vial of blood drawn.
RobinG (840.8 days ago) I personally dont feel that relying on the urine only to red flag first is the safest but thats just my opinion. Different countries def do things differently and if one country doesnt do things because they feel it isnt necessary doesnt mean that the other country is doing it for money or your country made the better decision. It is all about opinion. I am tired of hearing moms say that the US does things for money because in their opinion it isnt needed and their country doesnt do it. (In the 2.5 years I`ve been here it has been mentioned many times) I view it as us feeling it is safer to do the testing ~ All our docs do things for a reason and it isnt always money. It upsetting to hear other say we get tests for money and it would hurt your feelings if we all kept saying your country doesnt take the safest precautions and we are better. The countries vary ~ period ~ one is not better then the other, wish the various posters on this site would so stop saying we do tests or procedures for money ~ Maybe some do but that is in all countries, not just the US and not all cases. Maybe a select few. 3rd just cause your country doesnt feel it is needed and the urine test is enough doesnt mean your country knows better then us. Maybe our cases are proof that your test of urine alone isnt enough so we go that added step ~ k done venting...
hunnybunnysmama (840.9 days ago) Of course you don`t have to take it but I also agree with Robin - I would feel I`m putting my baby at risk because I think I am healthy. GD is one of the most common pregnancy complication. Anyone can get it... of course, there are certain risk factors that make you more likely to get it. My midwife also tested my urine regularly before I took the glucose test but the urine test can`t read your blood sugar levels it just gives red flags. I would worry myself sick that every headache, every fatigued day or any other pregnancy symptom is because I have GD. I would go crazy with worry especially knowing I could be taking precautions to control the situation. A baby born to a mom with GD can have immediate health issues followed by life long health issues...
heathert (840.9 days ago) I agree with Robin. If you have gestational diabetes it is very serious to be closely monitored for you and baby.
RobinG (840.9 days ago) I wouldnt ever consider NOT doing it ~ it took a whole 10mins for me to get it done. I drank the stuff a time frame before blood drawn and got blood drawn. To me I`d rather get it done and know I am fine then not do it and regret it ~ even in a slim chance. I am def for not having testing that isnt necessary but this isnt one that fits that bill IMO ~ but thats me ~
mtnwoman(shelly) (840.9 days ago) I had never even considered not doing it. Last baby I had I just went with the flow and felt like I was in a baby factory. I will really look into it now that you posed this question and see if it is something that I absolutely have to do!
LKLmama (840.9 days ago) I will not be doing this test. Remember you can refuse ANY testing at ANY time!!
love.nora (840.9 days ago) As to my comment of it being stupid. I did some research and the possiblility of me having diabetes is majorly slim. Even if you test positive the first time it doesnt mean you have diabetes. They will do another test which is 3 hrs long followed by more testing...I just think if I am not having any signs of complications it shouldnt matter if I do the test or not.
