i like the keeping them backwards, for safety reasons! it is some times more convienent to see them and hand them things, i being 5 ft tall couldnt reach my LO from the back seat but safety is wayyy more important!...just about all my friends couldnt wait to change from rear to front and did so at about 6-8 months!!...i thought that was way to soon, my almost 2 year old is only 21 lbs so i still put her rear facing when i drive but her dad has another car seat facing forward maybe i will be lil more demanding on the rear facing alot of ppl think its the right thing because of their legs...

Wow so different over here...I cant remember exactly but I think it was around 5-6 months old when we can turn them to face the front, my daughter is 10 months now and has been facing the front for ages. Guess it depends on the country!

This is what I was seeing in the UK... http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/images/gall9.gif http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/images/gall2.gif These are anchored to the floor or something differently...there is plenty of room for their feet to hang off...just like in forward facing.

Most of u will probably shake yr head in disapproval but I turned my son to FF 2days ago. He turned 1 yr nearly 2 weeks back and is 20 lbs not more not less. The reason being he was extremely uncomfortable in his Safety 1st infant seat with his legs scrunched up and it was obvious how much he hated it. He would cry 5 min into the car ride. He is very long and the seat was getting too small for him. I couldn`t let him cry like that knowing that he was just so uncomfortable. Long car rides were out of the question. Now that he`s in his 3 in 1 Graco Nautilus, he`s sooo comfy and actually looks relieved. This is working well for us and am glad I made this decision.

cheeky, I just looked up some information about rear facing seats in the UK. It sounds and looks like those seats have extenders in the back. There is visible room for their legs. Is this something readily available here? Criss-cross apple-sauce (aka Indian Style)...have your kids every complained about sitting this way? My daughter was complaining about it constantly in kindergarten (because that it the way they sit). Her legs were falling asleep and it was hurting her hips. Anyway, took her to the pediatrician and he said that kids` legs are either turned in or out. Her`s turn in and makes sitting this way difficult. You know if your legs tilt in or out by laying on the floor on your tummy and see which direction their feet turn in...in or out. Anyway...I know she would have had difficulty sitting that way, so the seat extenders they use in Scandanavia or the UK would most likely work better for her. Any info on this????

They sit indian style if there legs are longer...Olivia is RF still at 13 months and will stay that way til at least 18 months or longer. She is content this way....AND I know she is the safest she can be.

I am not trying to start a debate...just an honest question...what do you do with the kids` legs when they have extended beyond the car seat? I have a nearly 4 year old and I couldn`t imagine how he would still fit in his car seat comfortably being rear-faced. How do you do it?

Well basing on fact, different states have different car seat laws. Federal law in the US dictates 1 year OR 20 lbs. State laws derive their laws from federal laws so they may differ requiring both age and weight where others will require one be met and others require only the weight be met.
Not sure why the federal laws have not been updated in keeping with the current statistics.

I will leave her rear facing until it`s not comfortable for her. If it`s one it`s one if it`s two then two... I have no set number in mind but deff not till after one. :)

My little girl is 16 months about 22lbs and she will be rear-facing for a long time! Her car seat rear faces until 35lbs so that is when i plan to face her forward. I`ve done polls on this before and you will get lots of opinions, some based out of uneducated opinion on this topic. Fact is fact, I`ve done tons of research on it(It seems like you have too) and I want her to be as safe as possible. She doesn`t even know what facing forward is like at this point and she won`t for a long time.

it is BOTH.

Mommy2Chloe (17.7 days ago)
Yes, it`s supposed to be both and my LO is still turned rear facing. I was just curious. I`ve heard people turning their LO`s around early. I`ve seen polls about it before but I don`t know who did them.

Isn`t it supposed to be 20lb. AND one year old? I`m keeping my 20 lb. one year old rear-facing for a long time, so it doesn`t really affect me. I thought that it was supposed to be both though, not either or. (not debating, just curious). :-)
