soon2be3 (828.5 days ago) I did not get the chicken pox until I was 30 years old. I thought I was in the clear. Two days post-baby was terrible. I had over 300 pox marks on my boobs alone...and YES I counted them because I was so miserable and in so much pain. They even got into my milk ducts and caused me to bleed into my breast milk. If you can imagine a place on your body...I had them...EVERYWHERE! It was horrible, horrible, horrible. The fever and pain were the worst. I have scars on marks that I didn`t even scratch. EditDelete
soon2be3 (828.5 days ago) Talk to your Dr. There is a shot that you can get that will give you anti-bodies to fight off chicken pox. I was pregnant when I was first exposed to chicken pox and had never had them or the vaccine before. If a non-immune woman gets exposed to chickenpox during pregnancy, she usually will be given an injection of VZIG, which contains chickenpox-fighting antibodies. VZIG doesn`t always prevent the woman from becoming infected, but it may lessen the severity of her symptoms. Unfortunately, the hospital did not have the VZIG or the other vaccination (simliar) at the time and my window of opportuntity to receive it and not get the chicken pox had closed. I don`t know if they would give something similiar to babies. Chicken pox vaccine is not available until your little one is a year old. Two days after my son was born, I did get the chicken pox and he got them 11 days later. My third child also got them prior to his 1st birthday. You can get the chicken pox again...even if you have been vaccinated or have had them prior. Chicken pox are contagious until the last pox marked has scabbed over. You are also contagious a day or two before the first spot appears. Sooooo, the period of time that you can be contagious can be a long time. My last spots appeared 7 days after the first appeared and took two days to scab over...all and all, I was contagious for about 11 days.

Dezzi (828.7 days ago) As fas as I know, as soon as chicken pox break out (the child gets the spots), its no longer contagious ;) If that was the case, you might be ok! But still, better to get them now than when the child is older or an adult! I know families that used to have `chicken pox parties`. One child would get sick, so all the mum`s would send their kids over to get it too. lol EditDelete
babydecember (828.7 days ago) I personally wouldn`t do anything to keep my LO from being exposed, cause it`s gonna happen sooner or later. As everyone has pointed out already, it`s better to get it while you`re still very young. And once you get it, you`re immune for life. The vaccine doesn`t cover you for life, I think it only keeps you immune for 10 years or so...I had it as an adolescent, and it wasn`t bad, so no worries :) EditDelete
kelly.m (828.8 days ago) we used to get to sent to friends on purpose, who had chicken pox, when i was a kid and ill be doing the same for my little boy. The sooner they have it the better. The kids gonna get it at some pint anyway, yes it contagious but its not deadly!!! EditDelete
nutnut (828.8 days ago) isnt there a chicken pox vaccination? i couldve sworn there was. i think my daughter had to have it before they let her in daycare. its better to have chicken pox when young. my cousin gave it to my grandfater when he was in his mid 60s. that was not good on him. personally i wouldnt put my child around others if she had chicken pox, but who knows why other parents do. theyre only contagious for a short period (its been so long i dont remember when and dont want to misinform by guessing) but you can probably ask the pediatrican how long they are contagious for. parents may be sending their kids back to school bc the dr. said its ok, who knows. with the laws regarding how many days a kid can miss from school out here, i hate keeping her home. they threaten to call child protective services if you kid misses 2 days in a row, even if you call the school, and get all the work etc. they want dr. notes for every little thing. so not to defend parents who send their kids to school sick, but it could have alot to do with things. you can just keep your kid home anymore without a hassle, so they tend to just send them back maybe a day or so earlier than lets say our parents would have. i stayed out over a week with chicken pox. but the drs out here may only write the note for half that time. personally i think its rubbish, but what can you do? i would just inquire about the chicken pox vaccination if you havent already. not sure what age they can have it. just ask when you call to tell them your child has been exposed to it. we all got exposed to swine flu this year. luckily we didnt get it. theres so much a kid gets exposed to in school, daycare, or just playing with other kids. its pretty scarey to be honest. i try to protect mine the best i can. thats pretty much all anyone can do. it would be nice if every parent taught their children how to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, use tissues, use hand sanitizers, or just kept them home when they were sick, but it never seems to work out that way. good luck. call the pediatrican. is your child exposed to it at daycare or school? if so i would try to find out what precautions the institution is using to prevent the spread of not only chicken pox, but any other illnesses. they should be taking extra precautions, i know my daguhter`s school has. they constantly have the kids hand washing and sanitizing. good luck. sorry your going through this right now. =( EditDelete
love.nora (828.8 days ago) Thats great news! My son is 5 and just got them a few weeks ago right after hsi chicken pox vaccine for school. I would rather my kids get the pox now than later on in life. I never got mine till I was past 5th grade and it sucked bad!!! Every kid gets chicken pox and some people even hold chicken pox parties so they all can have it at the same time. EditDelete
luvbeingamom (828.8 days ago) The good news it is only Chicken pox and though it will suck for a few days, it should be ok! How old is your LO? DId you get the chicken pox vaccine? EditDelete
canadababy (828.9 days ago) From what I understand, if they`re exposed there`s nothing you can do...but if your baby is really young you may want to give your ped a call :) EditDelete
