brendalee`s poll Show results | Hide results

Other-poll poll A 3 year old shot himself in the head near me, it was ruled accidental but what do you think should happen to the parents? The father is a cop and the mother is a former marine who had planned on reenlisting after college as a officer. This is not ment to upset any friends of the family that are on here, I think the media is being to harsh on them actually, I`m just wondering what people think about the issue of children dying as a result of a parent`s `carelessness`.
(Other poll by brendalee, 819 days ago)
Nothing, losing their child should be enough punishment
Fines or little jail time, it was an accident, but an accident they could have prevented.
The father should lose his job and the mother shouldn't be allowed to re-enlist (or just one or the other)
They should sit in prison. Their child died because of what they did.

The right to bare arms is in our constitution b/c it is one of the ways to know that the government works for the people, not the other way around. England saw what happened when people were `allowed` to own guns back in the days of Colonial America. The people disagreed with an unreasonable, tyrannical king and refused to be `governed` by him any longer. So, England and several other countries now took away that possibility by banning guns. Americans will never have that happen.

Oh yes... impose a tax on the people who are responsible enough to register their guns... that sounds GREAT! If guns should be banned because they kill people, what about cars or rogue elevators? I`m sorry, but I was raised that guns are tools, just like chain saws and lawn mowers. Where I live, they are used frequently to protect livestock against coyotes and the occasional mountain lion. They are used to put the Thanksgiving turkey on the table and bacon in the pan. Like all tools, they are properly stored away from ammunition. Possession is NOT a draconian law -- it`s the right to maintain the use of tools. Yes, we hunt. How is that any different than going to the grocery and buying your pound of ground beef. It is NOT cruel to properly harvest an animal for its consumption by your family -- as long as the animal is not wasted.

Cops are administered a certain amount of guns and are required to wear such guns while on duty……..wasn’t the father working? Obama is actually trying to pass a law where it’s not taking the right to bear arms away but paying a tax on every registered gun you own. But again it was the carelessness of the parents but no I think they are going to guilt themselves to enough punishment.

my husband, cousin and brother all shot them self and died in the past year and a half and I am pro guns b/c its not the gun that does it. the parents should be in jail for being so stupid o and i dont think they should have to learn they all ready knew it was wrong to leave a gun in reach unless you are a complete idiot everyone does and in that case if they are that dumb they dont need to be with the rest of society any way expc with the jobs they have,

Honestly, people need to get over the fact of people owning guns...I mean, who says it WASN`T careless that these people left an obviously loaded gun around a 3 year old..without the safety on? Why was it not in a safe, up high on a shelf in a locked closet, anywhere but lying within reach of a 3 year old? And, while people are rambling about American`s right to bare arms..are we not realizing that he was a COP who had to have a gun for his job? It`s not even just careless that a loaded gun was left in reach of a 3-year-old, to me it says these people have ZERO common sense. Accidents happen but this was a VERY preventable one.

roomfor1more: i was not being nasty to you, let me rephrase that. i meant the country that you live in could not and does not want to change this draconian law that says you have the right to bare arms. Things need to change, countries can change, they can evolve. im sorry that you had an intruder, its not funny when that happens, but if that were to happen over here, the last thing on my mind would be the thought that they had a gun as guns are rare here so we dont think that everyone is packin and the burglars know that too, so they dont bring anything either. Obviously its still a frightening experience but the chances of any one being killed in that situation are far less than if everyone had a gun. im rabbiting on and some one said, gun laws are not the issue on this poll so im shutting up. sorry for any personal offence, its a contentious issue.

awww such a sad sad tragedy. i feel for the parents they will have to live with this the rest of their lives. since i dont know the whole story i cant say what punishment they should get. i think loosing a child is punishment in itself. i think if this happend to me i would be praying they gave me the death penalty so i wouldnt have to live my life thinking of my baby every day. (even though it sounds selfish)i really dont know how to answer this. just feel so bad for the family of this child. i dont have a gun. but guns arent the only form of protection. i have a dog, while he isnt an `attack dog` he is MY responsibility to control. if he bites someone or god forbid kills one of my kids then it is in part my fault, just like weapsons if you own a gun you have to take precautions. if you dont there is a certain amount of liability here regardless. its just a sad situation. i choose not to own a gun but this poll isnt a debate over right to bear arms and what other people do isnt really my business. but i do believe the rules and regualations regarding weapons ownership, need to be readdressed in general. simply bc there really is too many kids getting hold of mom and dads gun and using on themselves or others accidently or purposefully. so if you want to own a weapon, you have to step up and take responsibility for it, just like owning a pet, or having a swimming pool, or owning a car. all these things could potentially kill a child if parents arent using precautions. my prayers go out to the family.

yea thats right take away the right to bare arms.... please.......how will victims protect themselves then? my husband is a hunter we have a hunting room where all the guns are my son knows not to go in that room, all our guns are not loaded and have the safety on. we have one in our bedroom that is up high enough i cant reach it with out a chair. we need to be able to protect ourselves but we also need to be responsible!!

Thank you RobinG :-), and well said Brendalee!

brendalee (818.9 days ago)
Guns should NEVER be banned. Yall don`t want to see what happens to every white house official if guns get banned, half of them would be dead.

RobinG (818.9 days ago)
Guns dont kill people irresponsible people do ~ my husband is a hunter and we have guns. They all have safety locks and the bullets are not even on the property. Guns dont kill people irresponsible people do.. Hugs roomfor1more

louisec, if you noticed, I have a poll about all of the foolishness happening to all of the innocent children. There is no need to get nasty towards me because I am a RESPONSIBLE gun owner! It breaks my heart when a child dies because of a gun. You are right a child does have the right to live without fear. This also applies to someone breaking in on a family. A few weeks ago someone tried to break into my home. As a parent, it is MY right to protect them from an intruder! The situation is sad and that child deserves to still be a live!

louisec (818.9 days ago)
Its also a right for a child to live without fear of their brains being blown out , but we see parents rights take over when it comes to an old law. of course you couldn,t possibly change, after all its only a child`s death.

Str8 As (818.9 days ago)
It is our right to own, but it is up to the gun owner to prevent these things from happening. I own a gun, but like I said, I make sure the safety is on and it is out of reach. My children are young and they have no idea we have a gun.

louisec (818.9 days ago)
Safety off? why was there even a bullet in the gun, and why was it not locked away? and better still when will laws be changed to stop people think its their right to own a gun in the first place. This happens far too often and the gun lobbyists still have their way and keep it in your constitution. numerous countries get along fine without the need for so many people to be armed. What other means of death can be used so quickly to snuff out a life? household items have the potential to maim or kill by accident. A gun has only one purpose (to do those very things). look at the stats of gun deaths in countries that have very strict laws in the ownership of handguns. very sad for the parents, obviously they should not be made to go through the courts. they did not intentionally endanger their daughter. i couldn,t help noticing that in the list of what to vote for, there was not one for a gun ban!

brendalee (818.9 days ago)
Im assuming the safety was off, because even I have trouble switching the safety on for one of our guns. We have 3, and plan on getting plenty more but my daughter will never be around them. The only time one was even in the same room as her was when we brought it in her room after her bathroom light turned on and the sink turned on because we thought someone was in her room.

marisha (818.9 days ago)
that`s why there will be no guns in my home ever. how sad.

RobinG (819 days ago)
IMO it is manslaughter ~ it is no different then any other situation where the parent was negligent and the child died. Like DWI, texting, speeding etc etc. They palced their child in harms way by not following a safety precaution to prevent it. Yes and accident and not intended but that is what manslaughter is. I do however feel in some of these manslaughter cases that jail time isnt necessary. They will suffer enough and jail will not change it. They didnt intend for this to happen ~ my heart breaks for situations like this ~ all are victims in cases like this :( I do however feel he should loose his job if it was his gun he left out or be placed on desk duty where he does not have use a gun. If it was her same deal. It depends on who the gun belonged to and who was in charge caring for the child at the time.

Str8 As (819 days ago)
I chose a fine only because both parents has had training on weapon safety. With that type of background, the 3yo should not have been able to access the gun so easily. Also, why was the safety off? Losing a child is hard enough and accidents happen, but some of this just seem to be carelessness. As a gun owner, I make sure my children cannot reach it and safety is always on just in case they find a way to reach it. I feel bad :-(

  1. OMG, I posted on FB (in reponse to a suggestion made to me on From Our House To Yours) that I didn`t like a business because the items were very expensive and my friend got a bad deal there and the owner is threatening to sue me! Have you ever heard of such a thing? I actually paid a consultation fee and my lawyer told me that she was `absurd with possible mental health problems.` I am protected by the fisrt ammendment to express my honest opinions freely where I choose, but he said she can take it to court(because people can TRY to sue over anything) anyway and that it might cost me legal bills. We will both be out a lot of money because she couldn`t possibly win. Can you believe that? FML! First my records and now this! I hope my baby isn`t a bad luck baby. I see people not recommending or recommending businesses all the time on FB!
  2. Is SaraKelly still on here? I know she was a mod but I didn`t see her post in the previous Who Is A Mod poll...
  3. ANGRY!!!! My jenakers account is missing my ENTIRE journal from my high risk pregnancy and my letthisonestick account for my 7 month old is completely gone along with my journal. I AM SICK OVER IT!
  4. I`ve re-thought the moderating of the member-postings. How does this sound? Let`s change it to usage, rather than length of time as a member. Say your first 10 or 20 polls, questions and pictures need to be approved by a Mod or something like that. Someone posting the racist polls and adding the kiddie porn is unlikely to participate as a normal member. Once you are verified as a regular member you`re no longer monitored.
  5. How long did it take you to get pregnant after you got your IUD (Mirena) out?
  6. Twilight valentines for 7 year olds... appropriate or not? DD received a valentine with a very... sultry smoldery Edward on the front and I was just kind of surprised that anyone would buy those for 7 year olds? I know I`m on the conservative side in general on those kinds of things, but this really surprised me!
  7. My daughter is almost 5 months and 3 weeks ago my hair started falling out. I know it`s normal but how long did it last for you?
  8. With all the issues going on with the site maybe we need an updated list on Mods. Obviously Laura is the one to go to but if there is a concern and it needs immediate attention and a Mod is online it may be good to know who is who so you can reach out to them. Mods, can you please post here so we know who you are. (Esp since some profiles names had to be changed because of recent log on issues)
  9. Anyone wanna try http://parentspuzzlepieces.spruz.com/ a free community site I just made? Let me know if you want the password and would want to help add things to it!!
  10. I think with all the posting issues IAP needs to appoint someone to verify all pictures, polls, questions, etc that are posted by new members. Sure, it`ll probably make things slower, but something needs to be done! Many websites have this installed and IAP needs it as well. Members that have been on the site for a certain time can be exempt, but if you are a new member, posts should be monitored. I`m going to copy this suggestoin to Laura and if you agree you should too!! :)
