babydecember (754.7 days ago) I studied nutrition in college, and when we discussed pediatric nutrition I was taught that it`s okay to start feeding them food when they show physical signs of being ready: showing an interest in food, having a few teeth in their mouth, lack of the extrusion reflex (pushing stuff out of their mouth with their tongue). Their might have been more signs, but it`s been a couple years for me. Anyway, they said this usually starts between 4 to 6 months of age. Granted, the longer you wait the less the chance of developing food allergies, and the more the digestive system matures...but ultimately it`s up to you.
marisha (754.9 days ago) i say if the baby is ready and acts like he needs extra food, then go for it, if he is doing ok and is not hungry, don`t give him food yet, or maybe just try a spoon here and there like RobinG said. my son started eating solids at 4 months, but he was ALWAYS hungry, so i could tell he needed it ( he was also very big ), my doctor was ok with it too.he did very well!
RobinG (754.9 days ago) I would hold off but not entirely, when you sit down to eat take the spoon dip it in some of his milk or cereal and let him hold the spoon if he can hold it. I think he is more intersted in playing with the spoon then the food even though he liked the taste. Babies loves to mouth things so he will be just as content to have the empty spoon as if food was on it most likely ~ I wouldnt hold of til 6 months ( 5 months is fine) but a bite here and there isnt an issue either. He certainly doesnt need 2-3 meals a day but a teaspoon of cereal, not fruit yet when you have dinner once a day isnt going to do any harm ~
marli (754.9 days ago) This has been a hot topic on here recently. You will have a lot of mom`s telling you it`s bad for them etc. Other`s will tell you go for it. Personally, I would go by what YOU think is right. No one knows your child better than you and 15 years ago we didn`t have internet to get `advice` from people. I started my son on solids once a day at a week shy of 5 months, which was recommended by my ped. My son also, is a big boy. He`s now 9 months, 23 lbs. The only reason I started him on solids when I did is because I could tell he was interested, just like yours. As long as the majority of his nutrition is coming from BM it`ll be fine. Good Luck.
5against1 (755 days ago) I would hold off til atleast 6 months. He will still be interested when you start up again in a few months.
Angel-baby (755 days ago) Ok- I am torn as to what to do.. My son is 4 1/2 months old. He already weighs 19 1/2 lbs. I know- big boy but he is also tall for his age- 27 inches. Anyway, the Dr. mentioned not needing to supplement with cereal as he was content with BF. However, I have a few times tried giving him cereal at night time to see if he would sleep longer-- which didn`t work :( However, he is very interested in the spoon/fork and opens his mouth when I eat and when I have given him cereal it has been with a spoon which he opens his mouth and takes it.. Since he is so interactive when we eat, would you give your LO anything? Applesauce, cereal, banana, etc?? I know they say not to really start on anything till around 6 months but he is acting like he wants it. He is able to sit on his own as well.. What do you think.. Thanks a bunch ladies!!
