hannahe (753.4 days ago) it could be something to talk to your doc about but it could also be nothing. my best friends daughter used to do that for a long time and when i started babysitting her i would tell her to `chew like a person` and now she will still point out to me `look hannah i chew like a person` and this is years later :) haha
RobinG (753.4 days ago) Not sure if you have read my story or not but Hunter is my 3rd. He too struggled to chew food and him being my 3rd I was concerned cause I knew he should know. I called early intervention and had him evaluated. As per docs recommendation. Having teeth doesnt always mean they can eat and what I learned is there are many cases of kids who struggled with just oral sensory issues and eating. For Hunter is is called oral dyspraxia but there are other dx`s. It isnt a major concern for most and very treatable with a bit of therapy help. My nephew had low muscle tone in his mouth and struggled to eat and also got PT for a few month to help with eating when he was 2. It is very possible she is fine and just taking a bit longer to get it down but it is also possible she is having a geniune problem and some intervention may help her get back on track. For peace of mind let a professional tell you she is fine or not fine and needs a bit of help in eating. Picking up foods, chewing, knowing/feeling there is food still there to chew and knowing to swallow it is a big thing requiring various motor skills. Hunter will put foods in his mouth but not chew them fully and can pocket them for hours sometimes. Or forget to chew and we have to remind him to chew. (motor planning issue) It was very frustrating for me with Hunter. He ate baby food stage 2-3 til he was about 15 months. Some would easily say he will catch on but I`m glad I didnt go with that thought and called EI. What you`d do is call Early Intervention and tell them your LO is having trouble with eating and you are concerned and want someone to evaluate her. They will come and evaluate and confirm a concern or give peace of mind that she is fine and add a few tips on helping her :)
