canadababy (751.5 days ago) I found this: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/medeff/res/cough-toux-eng.php It is a certain active ingredient that they`re not recommending for under 6yrs old.
canadababy (751.6 days ago) I heard it`s the kind of medicine, they now think it`s not good for kids under 6. Don`t think it has anything to do with the dosage. Because I don`t think it was all cold medicine, my MIL gave me a list (which I didn`t keep) and I believe it was only certain cold medicine that had one ingredient (that I can`t remember, lol)
Holly28 (751.7 days ago) So, can I still give it to her in small amounts? She isn`t sleeping because she is coughing so badly.
rosye13 (751.7 days ago) Too many people were accidentally overdosing their kids. At least that`s what I heard. They also say that they aren`t that effective in children under 6, but can sometimes have harsh side effects. I guess they just decided it wasn`t worth the risk. Oh, and I`m in the states, so that`s what they`re saying here, maybe it`s different in Canada :)
jenakers (751.7 days ago) My 2-1/2 year old got a bad cold 2 weeks ago. I was frusterated by a lack of over the counter meds to help with his sore throat and congestion. I talked to the pharamcist who spent 15 minutes w/ me even though she was clearly busy. She gave me children`s mucinex and told me to cut the dose in half. She said the reason they have upped the age is because people were OD-ing small children on Acetaminophine(sp)Ibuprophine. THE REASON; Some cough and cold medicines already contain these ingrediences and people were ALSO giving them Tylonol and IB WITH the cough/cold medicine thus, doubling the dose! Once a child is 4-6 it is much harder for them to OD on those medicines. So, if you give your young children a 1/2 dose read the ingredience and don`t give them additional meds that might combine into an OD. I took my son to the doctor the following day and told them EXACTLY what the pharmacist told me and they agreed. Always consult YOUR doctor though and don`t go by my word or another random internet stranger. Take care.
MummyLJ (751.7 days ago) Lol at your poll option ;) It`s because they never really did proper studies on dosage for children, they pretty much just did the calculations based on adult dosage, then reduced it for the weight of children. But now they`re realizing that meds can have different reactions on a child`s developing system than on a full grown adult, so while they do more research, they reccommended not giving it to kids under 6.
