tto (698.9 days ago) lovelee- As a 2nd grade teacher, I don`t mark down for spelling because phonetic, or invented spelling, is age appropriate. BUT later on in middle school or high school, I think it is unacceptable. It isn`t so much accepting bad spelling that bothers me, it`s what it means. It`s saying you don`t have to ensure that you are doing quality work- do it once and that`s good enough. Yet, at the same time, we expect every employee to do their job carefully, with quality, and double- checked. But since children aren`t taught to go back over things and make corrections, we`re left with substandard work that can be life threatening. Wouldn`t you expect your electrician to check his work? Or your OB/GYN? Your mechanic? EditDelete
lovelee (699 days ago) I agree with tto! Not to mention the text and net chat language... Lyk itz nt gud 4 d3m kidz...lol. I am horrified with the school system in my country who are teaching the children that near enough is good enough in regards to spelling. The children are not marked down as long as the words are spelled phonetically and I truly believe that this next generation will loose all ability to spell unless parents step up as the media sure isn`t helping. charliebaby (699.1 days ago) What annoys me are products that alter the spelling of food - Weet instead of Wheat, Quik instead of Quick etc etc. EditDelete
hunnybunnysmama (699.3 days ago) Yes, this new fad drives me nuts... but!... what is the point of blurring out someone flipping the bird and in the next scene they show them smoking crack? Seriously, blur out the crack smoking, I`d rather have my kid flippin` the bird. EditDelete
tto (699.4 days ago) Yes, I am a teacher too. Bad spelling, poor grammar, or using the wrong homonym bother me too. A lot of people will criticize us because we notice and are annoyed by it, but I see it as a respect issue. If I want people to read my thoughts, I should have respect enough for the reader to make it comprehendable. I feel like accepting any less is just adding to the deteoration of our country. I wonder if it is acceptable in some of the countries that are starting to really grow like China and India- they are a real economic threat to us. I think Americans need to have and maintain high expectations of each other. Why spend 13- 17 years or more in school only to allow yourself to appear uneducated? EditDelete
LizzyB. (699.4 days ago) It bugs me. I`m a teacher too, and for some reason my students think they don`t have to capitalize words that NEED to be capitalized. They just turned in a writing assignment, and I can`t believe how some of them don`t even capitalize book titles, names of people or cities, days of the week, etc... It`s like it doesn`t matter anymore. EditDelete
