Week by week Twins calendar: pregnancy in weeks 32-36

4-8 8-12 12-16 16-20 20-24 24-28 28-32 32-36 36-40

This is the month that a multiple pregnancy will be so much different than that of a single pregnancy. The babies are not able to grow as much now as there is simply not enough room. However, they are relying on their mother's nutrition to help them put on the final layer of fat. Each baby will weigh around 5 pounds by the 36th week. If your babies are born now, they may need to spend a little bit of time in the intensive care unit. The babies lungs are beginning to produce surfactant , which will help the babies lungs to expand for their first breath. The placenta is still functioning well and nourishing the developing babies.

Your babies will be checked to make sure that they are in the head down position, which is needed for optimal delivery. The position that the babies are in at this point are not likely to change before delivery.

Your hips may feel like they are spreading and the diameter of your pelvis has probably increased a little by this time. The cramped uterus does not allow for intense fetal movements, but you should still feel subtle movements. Your extremities may swell more at this time, so it is important to get your feet up as often as you can.

Braxton Hicks contractions may be very frequent now. If you are experiencing more than four contractions in an hour, call your practitioner. Even if the contractions are not painful or intense, you could be experiencing preterm labor.

Due to increased urination, vivid dreams, anxiety and difficulty finding a comfortable position, you may be having a hard time sleeping. It is important that you rest as much as possible during these last few weeks.

Appetite may decrease because your uterus is increasing and your stomach is left with limited space. Make sure that you are drinking lots of fluids.

Ongoing Symptoms

Backache
Nasal stuffiness
Sensitivity to sun
Bleeding gums
Constipation
Anemia
Breathlessness
Increased heart rate
Change in sexual desire
Change in appetite
Leg cramps
Heartburn
Stretch marks
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Leakage from nipples
Fatigue
Overheating
Hemorrhoids
Edema

To Think About This Month

Packing necessary hospital items
Obtaining baby care essentials
Finalize pediatrician selection
Install car seat in car

At The Doctor
Some women will deliver their babies around this time, while others will reman pregnant a little while longer. Your doctor will be checking the same things he has previously checked. At this point you will be monitored for any labor signs-dilation, effacement, contractions, water breakage, etc. In addition, your doctor will check for:
1.) Weight
2.) Blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate
3.) Heart and lungs
4.) Pelvic exam
5.) Urine screen for sugar, blood and bacteria
6.) Ultrasound assessment
7.) Fetal heartbeat
8.) Measure the fundus
9.) External palpation of the uterus
10.) Breast exam

36 weeks tomorrow and today I am miserable but happy. I went to my doc appt this morning to find out that I am 75% e-faced and dilated to a 4. She stripped my membranes and said I will probably see you tonight. I have been having contractions for days now but noticed them getting stronger since I left the doc’s. I lost my plug days ago and I am slowly leaking. I really hope this is it! I am so ready to feel like a normal person again. I have been on bed rest for sometime now so to for me to jump into activities it difficult since I haven’t built up the stamina. So I tried to walk around the block but the heat only allowed me to walk down the sidewalk and back. My backaches are another thing slowing me down. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to shoot them my direction. Today made me a believer that there is an end to this madness. Good luck to all of you!

Haven't been able to get on for awhile. I went into the hospital last monday because a I thought my water had broke. My water didn't break, but I was dilated to 2 cm and still having contractions. So needless to say my doctor says I'm here until they come. Maybe let me go home at 34 weeks. Word of advice to all of you, enjoy your freedom, this is the first time since last monday I've seen anything except my hospital room. Dilated to 3 cm now and they give me procardi 3 times a day. There has been a few days they have to give me other stuff. The first two days I was on Mag. Wasn't even alloowed to go to the bathroom with that.

Ok lady's I have a couple of questions. Please forgive my ignorance!lol My wife's dr. said he hasn't seen a uterus like hers in ten years. I guess for twins it usually measures 3 1/2 while my wifey's measures 5 1/2. Doc says it great and he is excited.lol while my wife is extremely uncomfortable. she is 31 weeks today I think? she told the dr. to c section her b/c she can't take anymore pain after 34 weeks, he laughed and said with her castiron uterus he wouldn't. My question is what does the uterus do? the bigger the more the baby can grow? what about the cervix, when it softens what does that mean? I would ask my wife however she might get agitated by me.lmao please let me know!!!!

hi everyone, thats me 35wks tomorro didnt think i would have made it this far, had 2 go 2 hospital on sat, was out shopping all day and really over did it, couldnt even drive home had 2 stop at garage and was voilently sick and by the time i got home the tightenings around my stomach, menstrual pains and back ache were getting too much and going on 4 2 long, so called hosp and they said to go in, both babies were going crazy on monitors and were lots of tightenings so they didnt allow me out and gave me steroid injections 2 nights running, just incase they did decide to come early. they said i was 1 cm and 50-60% effaced and that i wasnt n labour but if i did go they said it could be really quick and its half an hour to hospital from where i stay so i had to stay in but it was really relaxing and now that im home i feel worse than ever, baks sore again babies going crazy, but life must go on, just know i wont be out walking shopping and driving long distance again, plenty of rest from now on!! keep these wee boys in til at least 37 wks, at least i know their wee lungs will have matured so if i did go they should be fine as at my 33 wk scan they were meaauring 4lb 4. so they must be around 5lbs at least now! oh i cant wait...its so exciting..hold on in their ladies, our wee twins will be here soon.

ready4two - thanks so much for the response. I am so glad someone else is experiencing similar issues. I guess my littlest is under the 10th percentile, so tomorrow is the next big determining day. But maybe I will be as lucky as you. I also am not so good at the bedrest :-/. The girls are VERY active though and their heartbeats are great so I am very optimistic. Thanks again for the response. omgtwins - I felt great and had great reviews and then at 24 weeks my specialist basically said you know its standard to go on bedrest at 25 weeks with twins, we'll see what your doc says. I do work a pretty strenuous job. But my doc sure enough put me on 'limited rest' that week. She then put me on bedrest when I started having size descrepancies. So thats my story. I felt great, I feel great, but here I am on bedrest for nearly 2 months. I think it really depends. Good luck!

M.M.Masi - Tuesday, 8 Jul
Had my 33 wk visit today. I'm still measuring 42cm and I lost 2 lbs. That surprised me as my new favorite thing to eat is french toast and ice cream.
omgtwins - at around week 20 my Dr. told me he would probably put me on bedrest by 32 weeks - I'm 33 and stil ticking with no bedrest. I'm doing great besides the obvious being tired of carrying 10lbs+ babies around, I haven't had any problems. I even fired my cleaning lady because I'm still capable of doing a better job then she is :).

SecondPregFirstTwins - Tuesday, 8 Jul
omgtwins-It is normal to go through your entire pregnancy with out being ordered on bed rest if everything is going well. I'm 35 wks on friday, and I'm not on bedrest. I also don't work though, but I do still have to feed my horses and look after my toddler which can be very exausting. I'm sure some women can work until they decide when to leave if everything is going well. Hope this helps.

vanette - Tuesday, 8 Jul
omgtwins---i guess it depends on the person b/c im 32 wks and im still working full time and no bed rest! every time i ask the doc he says 'NO, your doing so great'...

omgtwins - Tuesday, 8 Jul
Hi I am 23 wks preg. w/ twin girls and was wondering if some of you could let me know when your doctor took you out of work. I know some of you mention bedrest, but when is it normal to be put on disabiliity if everything is going good?

ready4two - Monday, 7 Jul
P.S. I have had an 'irritable uterus' for several weeks as well that results in daily contractions but they are not rhythmic but are getting more uncomfortable. They have been keeping me up at night for the past week or so but they aren't the real thing, just real annoying.
Twin2008mommy, yes I too have been having twice weekly NST's since my twins growth discrepancy was at 15% it went up to 20% and then it has since gone back down. I started having changes in my cervix at about 31 weeks and have been on bedrest which I have pretty much ignored a great deal. I am now at 35 weeks and the babies are doing great and though I was dialated to 4cm as of last week, everyone seems happy where they are so don't worry too much just take care of yourself and trust that everyone is fine. I think that if the babies are doing ok, moving ok and all I think they should let them stay in but I'm no professional but it seems like sometimes docs can get a little carried away. Like I said, my growth discrepancy has narrowed and OMG these babies are taking over my body, I really willed myself to go into labor this weekend but it didn't happen and so as of next week I am at 36 weeks and I can barely move but everyone seems fine. In addition to twice weekly NST's I've been on Nifedipine and progesterone (which I opted not to take)so hang in there and trust your instincts.

TWINGIRLS08 - Monday, 7 Jul
CONGRATS! To all of you on your twin pregnancy. My twins are almost 6 months now, man does time fly. I never thought I would say this being that my pregnancy was horrible!, but at one point (believe it or not) I did miss being pregnant, so enjoy it. Any questions or anything feel free to leave a comment. Good Luck and GOD BLESS!

jordan82 - Sunday, 6 Jul
woo hoo 34 weeks...no contractions, no signs of any preterm labour, survivin the summer...17 days to go

twin2008mommy - Sunday, 6 Jul
Hi! I am new to the forum and LOVING that I found it and get to see others experience. It seems like no 2 stories are the same. I am 33 weeks Monday and have been on bedrest since MAY 15th! I am and have been having 2 appts a week nst scans and ultrasounds. The girls, especially one, are having growth problems. One of the twins is in teh 10-25% and as of last measurement the other was below 10% I dont think my girls are even 4lbs at 33 weeks. Does anyone have these kind of growth issues? They are saying if my wee one hasn't grown I will probably have to deliver in the next week or so. I really hate the idea of them being in the hospital for a long time :-/

MotherNature9 - Sunday, 6 Jul
I made it to week 32 and will be 33 weeks Friday, July 11th. It's getting harder carrying these boogers, but it has to be done. I'm having contractions more often than none, especially at night which means I get no sleep. My husband is wonderful. He lets me sleep in the morning while he takes care of the other children. My appetite has picked up again. Hungry every hour:) Doctors have me getting 'mini' U/S (as they call them) every Monday and doctor visits every Friday until the babies are born. I'm excited but so ready to push and be done. I've prayed that the Lord would help me to make it at least to my 37th, 38th week. I had my first set at 35 weeks. He's answered all my other prayers so I know He'll keep His promise on this one. I just need the strength to hold on 'cause I feel like I've been pregnant forever:)

happy4twins - Sunday, 6 Jul
Well just back from the hospital. Looks like my regular contractions have stopped finally. That is good. I just have to rest and take my meds and they should be in there for 3-4 more weeks. I was a little bummed but I know that it is for the best. I hope i make it all the way. Patience is so important in these final weeks.

jordan82 - Saturday, 5 Jul
Masi you are doing it, hang in there girl!!! I have to agree 2boysontheway, its ridiculous to want to try and make your babies come too soon, believe me i understand how uncomfortable it is to be pregnant with twins in the summer, but for our babies sake every day in the oven counts.. :). I too feel blessed to have found this website and a group of women that understand what i'm going through and to know many others before us have done it and and we have each others support. So keep o hangin in there ladies, it will be all worth it in the end!!!!

SecondPregFirstTwins - Saturday, 5 Jul
Yay, my sexy husband is almost home. I soo look forward to weekends. I love watching him play with our toddler, and right now it gives me a break. My dreams at night are getting very repetative. All I dream about are my twins, and what they'll look like. I can't wait to see them and hold them. I couldn't find a diaper bag that would be big enough for two babies, so I bought a med to small sized duffel bag and it is perfect. It even has some smaller pockets on the outside for bottles and such. And it was only $14. My lst US is in two weeks. Hoping these boys weigh around 6lbs, at 32wks A was 4.6 and B was 5.5 and I was measuring 42wks in size at 30wks. I can't imagine my belly stretching anymore. My belly looks huge now. But hay, at least I'm all belly. Phew, that was a lot to right, sorry ladies, just getting excited.

M.M.Masi - Saturday, 5 Jul
Made it to 33 weeks. Yay! 5 more to go till c-sec day. My babies haven't been able to flip since 28 weeks, they've tried but they are just to big (long). I went to Sams today to do some shopping, OMG, I thought I was going to pass out. How exhausting! I slept 12 hours straight and I'm still tired. 5 more wks, just 5, I can do it, I hope :)

2boysontheway - Friday, 4 Jul

soonmamax4 - Friday, 4 Jul
ok so has anyone else babies still been flipping lately...had a bit of false labour this week so they kept me in the hospital for a few days to make sure it didnt start because im already almost 36 weeks and 4cm dilated...and in the three days i was there they change positions 5 times that we know of...i thought it was a little late for twins to be turning...its just confusing me because im supposed to be booked for a section on the 17th but if they flip head down again i wouldnt need to...

SecondPregFirstTwins - Friday, 4 Jul
Yay, made it to 34wks, were on the home stretch now. My body soo wants these babies out, but my brain is saying no, they aren't ready. We are hanging in there for as long as we can. My feet and ankles swell so bad that they hurt to walk on. I hope all you ladies are hanging in there. We are almost done.

mommamindy2 - Thursday, 3 Jul
Hey ladies I hope you arfe all feeling well in keeping those babies in as long as possible. My girls will be 3 months on the 13th they were born at 31 weeks and 6 days and spent 31 days in the NICU. I feel for you moms who have their babies in the NICU. The girls are now weighing over 8lbs and i couldnt be happier! If anyone want to talk just let me know!!

twinsonboard08 - Thursday, 3 Jul
Just to give you guys a little piece of mind...I had twin girls 2 months ago and its the most amazing thing ever! They came early i had them at 34 weeks and they only spent 2 weeks in the nicu yes it was hard coming home without them but the nurses taught and showed me so many things while they were there that i was so gratful for! so hang in there ladies!

TwinsMakesFour - Thursday, 3 Jul
I am 35 weeks today. I have been having contractions for at least three days now with some water leakage. I went to the doc this a.m. and they told me that I am actually leaking urine. I was some what disappointed. She figures I will make it another two weeks before delivery. Very disappointing for me. I am so miserable just as everyone else is. I know it is best for the babies but my body cannot take anymore of this. I am a small person and there is no more room for them. Why me??

jordan82 - Thursday, 3 Jul
Doctor set my date for a c-section...July 23...i'm so excited 20 more days...just hoping and prayun they don't try to come sooner. I can't wait to be able to hold me wee small mn... <3<3

M.M.Masi - Thursday, 3 Jul
2boysontheway - take a look at the Natural Induction blogs. It's crazy!

2boysontheway - Wednesday, 2 Jul
OMG...what in the world r moms doing to make their babies come early??? i couldnt think of anything more horrible....my doctor took my last child 10 days early because he was getting to big to come out /down there/but that was in the hospital...i love everybodys baby names!!!!!...tommorow i find out how much they weigh....im really hoping for 4 and a half each!!!!

twinsontheway - Wednesday, 2 Jul
I went to the Dr. Yesterday and I am dilated to a 4! Dr. said he thinks they are coming sometime this week… and if they don’t by next Tuesday we will have to see about inducing me. I’m super excited and nervous at the same time! I’m going crazy now because all I can think about is when are these babies coming!!

vanette - Wednesday, 2 Jul
M.M.MASI----TRY LAYING ON YOUR BACK (IF ITS NOT TOO UNCOMFORTABLE) AND SEE IF U CAN SEE LIL BODY PARTS...I DO IT ALL THE TIME..JUST LAY ON MY BACK AND THEY GO BUCK WILD CRAZY! I DONT KNOW WHAT IS WHAT BUT IT PRETTY COOL TO LOOK AT! IT LOOKS LIKE THEIR TRYING TO GET OUT OF MY TUMMY...MAYBE IF THERE WAS ONLY ONE BABY IN MY TUMMY ILL PROLLY CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WHAT BETTER BUT SINCE ITS TWINS ITS JUST LIMBS EVERYWHERE!

M.M.Masi - Wednesday, 2 Jul
okay on a happier note, I'm am 99% sure i felt one of the babies feet and toes through my belly last night. It was so cool. I usually feel just a big hump (their backs) but yesterday I felt this little ball sticking out so I rubbed it, it kept on move and was about 2 inches long and was bumpy on the other end (like the toes). Am i just really excited thinking this or could I have really felt a foot? 5 and a ahlf more weeks to go and i get to kiss those little toes. :)

ready4two - Wednesday, 2 Jul
I also agree that compared to the heartache of pre-term babies stuck in NICU a litte (or alot) of discomfort on my part is worth healthy babies. My doctor has had me on a blood pressure medication called Nifedepine ( though I do not have high blood pressure) to stop contractions and it has worked really well with minimal side effects. At the start of my 35th week I am 4cm dialated and having contractions but doctor wants them in there just one more week. Thank goodness they sent me home yesterday and didn't make me stay at the hospital-very cool. Hang in there and keep your eye on the prize, if it helps, buy yourself something pretty to keep you going.

happy4twins - Wednesday, 2 Jul
A miserable as it is you are so right. I am really trying to make it until 7/22 when i will be 36 weeks. The babies will be a good weight then also. I would hate more than anything to have to come home without them. I am on complete bed rest and terbutaline to prevent contractions i have been having. I am just trying to hang in there like everyone else. I will keep your little ones in my prayers and hopefully soon they will come home.

M.M.Masi - Wednesday, 2 Jul
Vinesalyn - I agree with you. I hope most of the moms on here are just venting more than anything, me included. I haven't heard any of the twin moms trying to provoke their labor but I know the singleton moms on this site do all sort of absurd things to bring on their labor and I think it is a bad idea.

vinessalynn - Wednesday, 2 Jul
As miserable as all of you feel, nothing compares to going home without your babies. I thought by 35 weeks mine would be able to come straight home, but that isn't the case. They won't let them go home until they can eat on their own, maintain their temperatures, and for mine their jaundice has to be gone. Eating on their own is something that takes time to develope. If I could I would have wanted to keep them in until 36 weeks. Then they might have gone home with me, but as it is now it might take another week or two until they come. I know you feel huge and uncomfortable but think of the babies. Every day they stay inside of you is one day less in the hospital.

happy4twins - Tuesday, 1 Jul
Our boy/girl twins will be named Jesse and Abigail. I can't wait to meet them. Our 3 year old daughter Rachel is beyond exited and ready for them to come out. She talks to them everyday and gives my huge belly hugs and kisses.

SecondPregFirstTwins - Tuesday, 1 Jul
Happy Canada Day! My boys names are going to be Isaac and Hunter. My husband doesn't know what the babies are, but we had decided on names for both sexes. I got him the coolest surprise.I ordered him a t-shirt that says on the front Me and My Boys, and Underneath it has my first born son's name, the twins names, with the month's and year they were born underneath. My ob/gyn guaranteed me July for the twins, so I ordereed the shirt.I'm going to give it to him after they are born, in the hospital in front of our whole fam. I'm so excited. He'll get sappy.Yay. Four weeks to go. Aw, I want them out.At least my body does anyways.

M.M.Masi - Tuesday, 1 Jul
2boysontheway - We are in the same boat. I'll take sleepless nights up with the twins then this sloth like body that I have right now. lol. We are naming our boys Luke and James.

2boysontheway - Tuesday, 1 Jul

happy4twins - Tuesday, 1 Jul
I am happy that you are close. I am sitting here in misery wishing that my water would break or something would happen. I just cant wait anymore. I am 33 weeks but my two babies are at 5lbs and i am feeling constant pain in my back and having contractions. I was given terbutaline but cant stand to take it it makes me all jittery. Oh well i will wait and see what happens. Hang in there everyone (including me)!!

TwinsMakesFour - Monday, 30 Jun
Today I am 34 weeks and 4 days. I was excited this morning to find my mucus plug has come out. I have been leaking water since late last night. Now I am patiently sitting here waiting for contractions or for my water to break completely. I really hope today is the day. I lost my plug with my first pregnancy and had my daughter within six hrs. My last pregnancy was three weeks before I delivered. So again, I hope today is the day. I am ready to feel like a normal person again!!

vinessalynn - Monday, 30 Jun
Hey all, I had a moment so I thought I'd write. I had my babies Thursday June 26th. Isabella Faith was born first at 4lbs 1oz 16 3/4in, Daniella Grace came 11 minutes later weighing 4lbs 3oz 17 in long. I went into labor on Monday night and dilated from 2cm to 5cm. I stayed at 5cm and my labor stalled for almost two days. Finally they broke my water at midnight on the 26th and gave me pitocin, and at 4:56am my first was born. They are still in the hospital and I haven't slept much since then. They are doing great, no trouble breathing or anything. They had a little jaundice but will be off the billi lights after today. They are just small so are taking my breastmilk by feeding tube. Enjoy your sleep while you can. I have to pump every 2 hours and it's hard to rest hearing all the noises from the hospital machines. But we are blessed because the hospital has a bed in the room for my husband and I to sleep in. We have been with them almost every minute since their births, and they are absolutely beautiful. I wish they were at home but everything happens for a reason. It turns out Daniella had the cord wrapped around her neck, so even though they came early it could have alot worse. Good luck to everyone and hang in there, those babies will come when it's there time. I was 35 weeks exactly when they were born.

ready4two - Sunday, 29 Jun
I am feeling all your pain, my pelvis aches and I get so tired in my legs just walking to the next room. My doctor has me on twice weekly non-stess tests at the hospital which are pretty boring. I am getting very uncomfortable with the heat and the babies have dropped causing my feet and legs to swell. I am dreading my next U/S since I feel so sick laying on my back with the pressure on my belly, I almost passed out at my last one. Also, I have baby A engaged head down very low in my pelvis so the U/S tech has to go waaaaaay down low (if you know what I mean) to get head measurments and I come out gooped up from top to bottom (baby B is hanging on for dear life up under my ribs). I was having contractions this morning and very reluctantly took my tocolytics to stop them. I really wanted to let them go so I could just deliver already but doctor wants a few more days, bummer. Well, final strech ladies- definatly take time now to do something lovely for yourself, I think we've earned it. I got a hot chocolate from Starbucks the other day, the lady asked if I wanted extra whip cream and I paused for a moment, considered the size of my butt and then threw caution to the wind and said 'sure, I've earned it' so go for the extra whipcream (and syrup!)

M.M.Masi - Sunday, 29 Jun
The swelling in my feet hasn't come back. I think it may have had something to do with the chilli I've been eating for the passed 3 days. Maybe had to much sodium. I can't wait to have my nex u/s, i'm anxious to know how much they are measuring they feel to me like they might be at 18 inches or something really long like that.

SecondPregFirstTwins - Sunday, 29 Jun
My water had broken on it's own with my first. But I was induced day's before, and that was painful. I wanted to deck the doctor. My feet get swollen even when I'm sitting on the deck with my feet up and spraying them with the hose to keep them cool. And it's only gonna get worse as the weather gets hotter. Spent the day at the beach with two yr old playing in the sand. I love pregnant belly suntans. Especially when you belly shrinks your tan looks even darker. To cool. Just be careful not to burn, cause it is way to easy on the stretched skin.

mommy2bmay08 - Saturday, 28 Jun
Wierd, my doc broke my water when pg with ds but it didn't hurt at all. But it also failed to bring on labor too. Good luck to those of you in the home stretch I hope your babies come sooner rather than later!!! 6.5 weeks max for us ...can't wait!

soonmamax4 - Saturday, 28 Jun
on a sidenote, does anyone else feel like the more pregnant they get, the more addicted they get to this website...or is it just me???i feel like such a weirdo...for like a week ive been on here everyday checking this froum or that...guess im just getting ancy and have too much time on my hands that i have to sit around...and has anyone else noticed they dont have ankles at all anymore...my swelling is getting so bad...even after like 30 mins of sitting if my feet aren't up...and is anyone elkse finding it actually quite painful to get out of bed or roll over in bed...never thought id get so big my body physically couldnt support itself...
