Born & Birth stories

At this point of your pregnancy, the crown-to-rump length of your developing baby is 1.25 to 1.68 inches. It is now easier to tell how much the baby weighs since he is beginning to put on some weight. Your baby weighs approximately 5 grams and is the size of a small plum! The baby has grown an incredible amount during these past few weeks, but you still are not showing too much yet.

Fetus in pregnancy week 10 Click for a bigger movie of this busy boy

This week is somewhat of a landmark for your developing baby. By now, your babys complete body plan is laid down. Your baby will continue to develop and grow for the remainder of the pregnancy. The fingers and toes have separated and the tail has disappeared now. Your baby has taste and tooth buds at this point, which will continue to develop. The brain will continue to grow at an amazing rate and nearly a quarter of a million new neurons are produced every minute! The embryonic heart is completely developed. External genitalia are not apparent until next week, but the testes in baby boys will already be producing testosterone.

Because you have high hormone levels at this time, you may notice an abundance of emotional and physical effects. Most pregnant women find themselves getting distressed easily and have frequent mood swings. Common physical changes include the beginning of real weight gain, potential softening of the gums and slightly swollen thyroid glands. Common emotional changes include feelings of unattractiveness, feelings of inadequacy and concerns about what the future holds. Some women are not excited about their pregnancy at first and question the condition. Moodswings are not uncommon and many pregnancy women tend to get upset easily, cry at the slightest things, feel moody or drift on daydreams.

You may have gained a little weight already. Average weight gain during pregnancy is about 28lbs(13kgs), but most of that is gained in the second and third trimester.

3goingfor4nine- I am still breastfeeding my 23 month old. I really wouldn't mind if she just continued and i could tandem but my supply is low. She only nurses once or twice a day and sometimes for only 2 seconds on each side. it doesn't really hurt yet and i haven't gotten an aversion to it at all. i think she'll wean peacefully herself any day now.

momma24chickens - 23 days ago
10 weeeks! time is flying!

elle2 - 23 days ago
my morning sickness (all day and all night sickness) actually went away for a day, came back with a vengeance today, I actually felt relieved when I felt nauseous today, I was worried when I felt normal for a day. I find eating a cold salad with oil and vinegar helps. even cucumbers with oil and vinegar, I think it is the vinegar that does it. My mouth gets pasty and makes me feel sick, the only thing that cleans it is the vinegar from the salads.

3going4nine - 24 days ago
Is anyone else still BF an older child? My son is 16 months and I am in the process of weening him. I'm trying to make it as easy as possible, he's been eating a lot of ice-cream.

armywife63 - 24 days ago
It's kindergarten registration day in my town and I'm excited to register my son! I just hope I can get through the process without getting sick in the school!

annonshey - 24 days ago
Ugh! Never ending sickness here as well. I thought it was supposed to get better the further along you were. Nausea is the worst ever. I WISH i could throw up.... Sooooo miserable! I love my symptoms though, my bean is cooking!

3going4nine - 24 days ago
Morning sickness over here too. Its been terrible today and I have a headache too. I even got a 2 hour nap today and I still feel terrible.

Project:BumpTheThird - 25 days ago
annemac- The same thing happened to me with my first pregnancy in 2009. I was miserable with severe morning sickness and very emotional. I kept telling my husband that I thought I was pregnant with twins, since everything was so extreme. Turns out I was pregnant with twins, so I had double the hormones. I lost my twin baby at 9 weeks. My baby will always have a special place in my heart. The doctor said my body or my other baby would absorb the twin and he would examine the placenta. When it came time to deliver, there was no trace of the baby. My son will be 4 in a month, I have a 19 month old daughter, and now I'm pregnant with my third!

armywife63 - 25 days ago
elle2 - sorry you are still feeling so sick. Believe me, I feel your pain...I finally started feeling better on Saturday, but I just got sick walking into work this morning, so maybe the morning sickness isn't quite gone yet after all. I just suck on hard candies all day long -- it helps me to stop gagging sometimes. I hope it eases up for you soon!

elle2 - 25 days ago
Kathleen I haven't tried sea bands, I'll go buy some tomorrow. I have never felt this bad' Labour wasn't as bad as this! At least then I knew there was an end, it has been 5 weeks of pure hell it has gotten difficult to get excited of this pregnancy

kathleen112 - 25 days ago
Have you tried Sea Bands? You can get them at the drug store. You wear them around your wrists at a specific location--it's an acupressure point that combats nausea. My nausea wasn't too bad but I did wear it a couple days and it helped. I became a believer on a cruise years ago. I became terribly sea sick during a storm and was vomiting and one of the crew members gave me his pair--they worked like magic

elle2 - 25 days ago
Hi week 10! Not sure how much longer I can stand the nausea, even thinking about it makes me nauseous. I have tried everything, Ginger aid organic tea, my dr. prescribed pills that have been formulated for pregnant women, they didn't work, only thing that kinda works is if I eat salad with vinegar. I feel like I am neglecting my husband and 2 yr old son. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

sophie-hannah - 26 days ago
Same here kathleen :( i had a few spots with my 2 boys but this is awful my friend suggested cleaning my face with bicarb regularly so i'm trying that xx

kathleen112 - 26 days ago
Ugh my acne is terrible Sophie Hannah. I don't remember having it this bad with my son

annonshey - 26 days ago
Yay week 10! Hello all!

sophie-hannah - 26 days ago
Hello week 10 :) (again lol ultrasound put me back 2 weeks). 2 weeks till my next one :). Symptoms are subsiding apart from the 'lovely' pregnancy achne my spots keep me secure that baby is growing + my jeans are a tiny bit tighter this week too.

kathleen112 - 26 days ago
annemac--I've never experienced miscarriage (knock on wood) so I can't pretend to know what you're feeling right now but that would be a hard pill for anyone to swallow. You're mourning and celebrating at the same time. Any loss, no matter how early on, is extremely difficult I'm sure. I don't know how common it is for one twin to miscarry and another to survive but as far as I'm concerned your healthy baby is a miracle that should be celebrated. It's ok to feel conflicted, I'm sure anyone in your position would.

annemac - 26 days ago
Thought id post here as well as week 11 :) Hi everyone. I'm new here (kind of) I followed this page with my last pregnancy in 2010 he was born November 9th and now I am pregnant again. I just went for an ultrasound, tech said baby was healthy and measuring 11 weeks then my doc just called me to tell me I was pregnant with twins but one did not grow. I experienced a gush of fluid at 8 weeks and bleeding for a day after that. Now brown spotting on and off from 8 weeks to present. Just here for support I guess it's kind of bitter sweet news. I miscarried prior to my son and now another 'miscarriage' I'm so upset that I've lost one but happy at the same time I still have a healthy baby. Anyone go through anything similar? Thanks for listening :)

armywife63 - 26 days ago
Although I don't feel 100% better, I did notice that the amount of time I spent feeling sick this weekend was less than usual...I so pray that I get rid of morning sickness all together in the next couple of weeks.

kathleen112 - 27 days ago
I'm so jealous of everyone finding out the sex so early!! I'm sure I won't find out till 20 weeks. Kerianasmom--it's extremely common to feel that way around this time as pregnancy symptoms are easing up but you don't yet feel the bubs. I was convinced going into my ultrasound last Tuesday that there was going to be bad news and instead I saw a little bouncy bean like the one on the video on this page. I'm sure you will have a similar experience.

kerianasmom - 27 days ago
Starting to get worried. With my first pregnancy we have some early complications and therefore we were getting regular ultrasounds. With this pregnancy we have had one at 5 weeks and now have to wait for the next one. I honestly dont 'feel' pregnant....other than the belly. Can't wait to feel this baby move so I can set my mind at ease!!!

avaann - 27 days ago
The room is dead! Lol how is everyone doing? We're doing another high risk pregnancy and having our first trimester screening on may 9! We will be almost 13 weeks! We found our the gender of our last 2 during this screen so I'm hoping we'll to sneak a peek again! MS is letting up and I'm able to function loads better!

kathleen112 - 30 days ago
Thanks so much hopeful!! I also took a look at your LO's picture, looking good!!

LuckyPenny - 30 days ago
Hoping-I rented a hospital grade doppler for under $30 a month....soooooo worth my sanity!

hopingfor - 31 days ago
Kathleen, great news , so happy to hear baby is doing well.

kathleen112 - 31 days ago
Had my ultrasound and all is perfect!!! My bean was doing exactly what the LO in the video is doing, just jumping all around lol. I'm so happy and relieved. Baby was meausuring 11 weeks 1 day so I'm moving up. Hope everyone is well!!!

blessed-mama - 32 days ago
eightisenough - sorry i have not been on in a while however the unisom & vit B6 DOES work AWESOME however there are several types of unisom and you do not want the want the one with benadryl as the primary ingredient - instead you want the one with doxylamine succinate 25mg. My MD recommended it and I can honestly say after 2 days or so I went for MS 24hrs a day to virtually nausea free!!!

kathleen112 - 32 days ago
Argh ladies my mind is playing tricks on me. I'm so nervous for my ultrasound tomorrow. I know there's no reason to believe anything is wrong but I just have a bad feeling. Everything is probably fine...just anxious to get good news tomorrow night.

waitingtoexhale - 32 days ago
Last day in week 10. Soooo anxious still. Ugh. Next scan, NT scan, is in one week. Praying all is well with my little bean. Hopingfor, great news and I'm guessing girl. (Really bc I can't see anything yet.)

avaann - 33 days ago
I don't know how many of you this will help but a friend of mine has a company called tinyheartbeats.org that loans medical grade fetal dopplers out during pregnancy. They even pay for you to ship it back when you're done. The way to do this, however, is to have a had a previous miscarriage or similar. You will need to give them permission to obtain documents. I did this with my last pregnancy and it was amazing! MIGHT I ADD THIS IS FREE!

Morning lovely ladies. I had my 11 week us today, and I a happy to report baby has grown a lot, and is doing well. Baby is now measuring 36.8mm, and has a nice strong heart beat. I got a picture, although it is not as clear as actually viewing the baba on the screen. Anyhow, if you get a chance, take a looksie, and see if maybe you have a nub guesstimate.

waitingtoexhale - 33 days ago
So jealous of all of u that have told most people about ur pregnancy. I am still so scared that I'm still in the red zone. Ugh. On a good note, we finally got to skype with my hubs last night (midnight). It had been a while so that was a relief. Don't know what I'm gonna do about my co-sleeping 4 year old. Guess I have a few months to work on it. Kathleen, hope all is great at ur scan Tuesday!

kathleen112 - 35 days ago
I'm also feeling pretty good about everything despite not being out of the 'red' zone yet. I've told most people I know just waiting a little longer to tell my job and I still think it'll be awhile till I put the news on Facebook. I've already gained about 7 lbs from my pre baby weight which stinks but isn't surprising considering my ferocious appetite.

kathleen112 - 35 days ago
If I had the opportunity to buy a really good one on the cheap I'd definitely be tempted. Enjoy!! Can't wait to see my LO on Tuesday!!!

luv4lukas - 35 days ago
Yeah and that's why I debated getting one in the first place. But I also know how hard it is to find the heartbeat so I don't stress if I dont. I actually have felt really good about this pregnancy since my last ultrasound at 9 weeks. I guess you can say I was paranoid before, which is normal. Now I'm pretty laid back about it and have been a lot more positive. :) Its cool to hear the heartbeat. I would NEVER pay anything over $50 for a doppler but it's definitely been fun for hubby and I. And I actually think we have stronger bond with the baby now I feel. :)

kathleen112 - 35 days ago
luv4lukas--that does sound cool to have the doppler but there's no way I'd pay $600 for one. It's awesome that you got it so cheap!! Plus I agree with waitingtoexhale it might cause unnecessary worry if baby was positioned in a way that I couldn't hear the heartbeat.

kathleen112 - 35 days ago
Hooray for week 10! Moving along. I'm so disappointed, I had a doctor's appt today but it was an 'intake only' visit so they didn't do an ultrasound or even a doppler!! I am going to have an ultrasound on Tuesday night when I go for my sequential screen but was really looking forward to hearing or seeing my LO today and it didn't happen. :-( Is anyone else undergoing the sequential screen? It may have different names in different regions but it's the test where they measure the nuchal fold via ultrasound to check for nueural tube defects and let you know your risk for Down's and other genetic abnormalities.

waitingtoexhale - 35 days ago
Luv4lukas- I'm a little jealous of the doppler. Sounds so cool! But I know me, it would def make me more crazy than relieved. I'd be on it all the time! haha. But seriously, enjoy and have fun! This really is a precious time in our lives! As for me, I'm gonna have to wait until next Monday (10 more days) to see and hear my LO. :( Have a great weekend ladies!!

luv4lukas - 36 days ago
I'm in a pretty big facebook group with ladies who are all due in the fall. One of the ladies sent one to me as she had two. Its a babybeat doppler, you can purchase for $600 but she sold me hers for $50. (It was missing the recorder, which was part of the reason why it was so expensive). It works so well though and actually shows the number!

hopingfor - 36 days ago
Luv4lukas that is very cool. Wish. Had a Doppler of my own. I had for my other pregnancies a crappy one that you could barely hear the heartbeat and it never measured the rate. How much is a Doppler like you got?

luv4lukas - 36 days ago
Hey ladies, hopefully everyone and their little baby's are doing well! Just purchased a doppler and was able to find my little one's hb immediately! It was 168 :) So cool to see and hear! Last day in week 10 for me...looking forward to hitting that 'safe zone' and finally getting rid of this dang MS!

waitingtoexhale - 37 days ago
Hopingfor- good luck in week 11. Can't wait to join you. I totally get what you're saying about disbelief and I think you will be really connected as time goes on. I've been so scared to connect to this little one for fear of losing him/her. But I really think the 12 week scan is going to help me get past this. (Also, my son is calling the baby by a nickname and giving my belly kisses each day to say hi to his little brother.) -Geez, watch this be a girl! haha

hopingfor - 37 days ago
Last day in week 10, and gong into week 11. As each long week passes, I get a little bit more relieved, and become a little bit more aware that I am going to be a mother to anther child. I must say it still feels very surreal. I haven't actually convinced myself yet that I actually have a growing baby inside. Al the sickness and moodiness doesn't seem to make me believe. It's quite weird actually. I started to tell a few of my close family and friends that I am pregnant, and everytime they say congrats, it feels weird. Guess I am just in disbelief. Anyhow, one week till I see baba again, and hoping when I do, I will feel an even stronger connection to this pregnancy. I really didn't think I could have any more children, and I had tried for so long, so when I actually saw the lines it really came as a shock. Anyhow, hope everyone has a great day, and hopefully a ms feel one to boot.

waitingtoexhale - 37 days ago
Ok, well, this will prob sound silly, but I actually went out and bought some clothes to help disguise my growing bump. I really am extremely happy about this pregnancy and could just about explode with wanting to tell people! But, unfortunately for me, my history of miscarriages at this point just haunts me!! I just think back to the times when I had a mc and people didn't know what to do or say to me. This only made things worse and all I wanted to do when thed did say anything, was cry. Uuugh! I really need to pass the 12 week mark so I can shout from the rooftops how blessed and happy we are!!

waitingtoexhale - 37 days ago
Prayingforarainbow- I think it's way too early for them to even bring this up. The heartrate will generally level off between 12 and 14 weeks, that's when they might have some concerns. (It's not like the number was astronomical or anything.) I will pray that you can find some peace over these next couple weeks, as I'm sure you have plenty of other things to worry about. haha :) Hang in there!

brennaescarciga - 38 days ago
My son's heartbeat started out in the 80's (super low), then at 9 weeks 5 days was at 169 bpm. This baby was at 165 bpm at 9 weeks. Try not to stress! Every babe is different! I remember women on this site questioning their babies' heartbeat that were in the 90's when my little guy was in the 80's. I know it's hard not to compare, but there is a huge range of what can be normal.

hopingfor - 38 days ago
Hopingforarainow, what did your doctor say when he got that high heartbeat? How did he react? I can't recall ever having the heartbeat at fast, but what's the danger? Did he explain t to you at all. I'm sure baba is ok.... Maybe the baba was just excited that you came to visit. *wink* . Maybe google, although that can be more confusing then helpful, bu just to see if anyone else may have experienced that.

hopingfor - 38 days ago
Eightiisenough , I have not been using any meds for my ms, as I a very wary on how it would effect the baby. So far all I have been doing is drinking ginger ale and eating crackers or lightly salted chips and that can help when the nausea is offsetting. I once tried taking gravol just before bed, and I felt horrible. Started to get dizzy and just felt terrible. Never again! I am glad to report though hat instead of being nauseas 24 hrs a day, I only experience It about 10 hours in the course of a 24 hr day, so that's progress. Also noticed I am it as moody, so my family is quite happy about that.

Praying4aRainbow - 38 days ago
Hello ladies!! Yeah week 10! My doctor was able to find the heartbeat with a doppler at my appointment today, but he seemed a little concerned that it was a bit too high. The heartbeat started at 187, so he kept the doppler on for awhile, and heartbeat went as low as 180, but that still seemed high I guess. So now I'm a little worried... anyone else have numbers that high before? I'll have my next ultrasound in two weeks but that seems like a long ways away from now!
