Born & Birth stories

You are now in your second trimester! Your baby's crown to rump length is 3.2 to 4.5 inches long and he weighs approximately 1 ounce now. Your baby is about the size of the average fist.

Now that you are into your second trimester, you may be starting the best part of your pregnancy. You will probably start to feel more energetic and you may get the `pregnancy glow`. Your uterus is beginning to swell week by week and you can follow its progress by locating the top of the uterus. The position of the top of the uterus will continue to gradually move up your abdomen, from beneath the pubic line to above your navel. Maternity clothes are probably necessary now. You might also experience hemorrhoids, which are painful dilated blood vessels around or inside the anus.

Bones are formingAt this time, your baby's face is becoming more developed. The cheeks and bridge of his nose appear and the ears move from the sides of his neck to much higher on his head. The eyes continue to come closer together. A big development from this week onward is the development of lanugo. Lanugo is the fine hair that grows over almost your entire baby. The hairs grow in whirled patterns that follow the grain of his skin. These patterns later give way to your baby's fingerprints. The lanugo will be shed before birth and replaced by thicker, coarser hairs. Your baby's thyroid gland has matured and starts to produce hormones. If your baby is a boy, the prostate will appear and the ovaries descend from the abdomen into the pelvis in baby girls.

If you are having the Chorionic Villus sampling test (to check for Down's syndrome) it's done round about now.

The embryo`s soft cartilage is now being replaced with ` real` chalk bones.

Your baby has eyebrows, but no eyelashes. Fine, light hair also begins to grow.

Just wanted to say if you don't feel like your Dr or m/w is doing all they can for you then you need to speak up & if they still don't listen get another opinion!!! Don't forget that drs work for you! You pay their bill!! Healthcare has changed & its more about customer service and satisfying the patient! Tell your Dr or midwife your feelings just like you tell us. I promise if you tell your Dr flat out what you want, expect, or need you will be a lot happier!

Sublime- i understand how scary it is waking up to blood! Mine was found at 8 weeks but I wasn't even told by the doctor until I started bleeding at 10 weeks. I was pissed. They say that bed rest doesn't help or changing daily activities.. But I worked my ass off and the next day had bleeding so I know that over working can get it flowing. I hear that most heal by 20 weeks. Bleeding and passing the clots are good because we have to bleed it out or get that clot to break up so it can fully heal. Did they tell you if was an active bleed or a clot?

sublime0231 - 27 days ago
Brooke- I wasnt even offered a Nt scan and Im not sure why. I think its too late now and that makes me kinda mad. Thanks for the response. I never had my levels checked because the same day I started bleeding I had an ultrasound scheduled so the knew everything was okay, but that sounds scary. All i know is that last time it was checked it was large and that was at 11 weeks and that it first showed up on an ultrasound at 6 weeks so that seems like a long time for it to be there and still be big. Thanks for the reassurance tho!

brookebaby3 - 27 days ago
Sublime- yes they told me mine was caused by a vanishing twin also. My hcg levels fell by half when I had bleeding and was told I was miscarring.. About 2 weeks later I went in before a d&c and they found a healthy baby in there. I haven't bled in 3 weeks. I had my NT scan and they didn't find it so I'm hoping it is gone! Mine was located between the placenta and uterus so it was really scary!! I hope we all heal or ate healed already! After doing tons of research I've read that miscarriage is very low and that's why doctors aren't too concerned. They do not monitor it. If I'm Bleeding heavily they ask that I do go in to the ER.

sublime0231 - 27 days ago
mstof3- I also bleed clots. it was so scary. they say that the hemorrhage isnt between the placenta and uterus so it doesnt effect baby as much, but i dont know if i believe them. ha! I also had a bleed at 6 weeks and I guess the hemorrhage was there then, but i wasnt told until my second trip to the er at 11 weeks. Its just all so nerve racking. I have told family, but I am still afriad of the chance of miscarriage so i havent made an official facebook announcement or anything. I am going to have my appointment on Friday and if I dont feel satisfied after that seek a second opinion. I have not been able to enjoy this pregnancy at all..

Mistyof3 - 27 days ago
Sublime~ I too have a hemorrhage &found out when I was 8 weeks I bled so bad with chunks of stuff (tmi I know) i thought I was miscarrying but didnt &I spotted for 2 weeks then it will stop then it will start again I get craps when it happens so I stress about it a lot. I don't get an ultrasound till I'm 16 weeks but that's only bc I'm having a amneo done to check for downs my actual ultrasound I will get will b when I'm 21 weeks. I had a crappy doctor so I would do whatever makes u comfortable if u feel u need a 2nd opinion id get one.

sublime0231 - 27 days ago
Brooke- I also have a hemorrhage. I found out at my 10 week ultrasound. the tech said she believed it was caused when I lost one twin. Was your situation similar? My midwife didnt seem too concerned and didnt schedule any extra appointments. at 11 weeks i started bleeding alot so i went to the er and said i had a large subchorionic hemorrhage. I havent had any appointments since, but still have spotting daily. my next appointment is Friday @ which we will hear the heart beat on the monitor, but I dont have any ultrasound scheduled until 18 weeks. Im a little concerned with how relaxed my mw has been about it. I keep going back and forth about whether or not to get a second opinion. Sorry for the novel! I guyess Im just wondering if they have been monitoring your hemorrhage? Anyway, yayy second trimester!! :)

brookebaby3 - 27 days ago
Claire- yes it is funny to go along with it! Hahah this has had me cracking up today! Thanks for the good laugh :)

brookebaby3 - 27 days ago
Betty- oh no! I think it's every man!! Lmao! Even if they don't say it, they think it..

Bettys4thbaby - 27 days ago
Lmao & here I thought my husband was the only one who came up with dumb stuff like that....

claire0308 - 28 days ago
Trust me they don't, but it's fun letting them believe it from time to time lol

brookebaby3 - 28 days ago
I just don't understand why men think they have this miracle tonic that cures everything!!?

Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 28 days ago
Roflmao as I read along!

brookebaby3 - 28 days ago
Claire- all the protein huh!! Lol it's great for hair nails skin after a work out protein shot and a good teeth cleaning lmao!!

claire0308 - 28 days ago
I don't want to tell you what my DH just said what is good for your skin, but I smacked him one lol.

brookebaby3 - 28 days ago
Yes, even normal milk is great for skin

babylove76 - 28 days ago
I heard milk of magnesia is great for clearing acne! Use a cotton swab to apply a thin layer on skin. Some people also said it was an amazing primer for their makeup when they were using it. Said it gave them a smooth matte look and feel!

brookebaby3 - 28 days ago
I've never heard to use castor oil! I know you should avoid more than 2% of salicystic acid. It's contains aspirin and isn't safe during pregnancy. Try using a Greek yogurt and apply it like a mask. Leave on for 15 mins. It will kill bacteria and infuse your skin with moisture. If you pop pimples makes sure to dab rubbing alcohol on them before washing your face. They'll dry out faster and kill bacteria. Make sure your washing your makeup brushes after every use!

taliesther - 28 days ago
i've heard that castor oil works well for acne (and it's all natural).

Mistyof3 - 28 days ago
I have such horrible acne with this pregnancy. This is my fourth &its never been like this its gotten so bad that I need to see a dermo but I can't really afford to right now. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do...its so emberrasing I don't even want to leave the house. Please any advice would b great.

brookebaby3 - 28 days ago
Elly- I love cooking and watching food tv channels. I'm always in search for a new recipe or what to make for diner. I start watching a food show and get so hungry! Lol it's been about 80+ degrees where I'm at so its way too hot to go outside. Blah I really need to slow down or at least get my ultrasound done so I know weather this blood clot is completely healed so I can do light excercise!! I usually run 2 miles a day but can't now :( does anybody else work out daily?

brookebaby3 - 28 days ago
Betty- I am not a napper! I never take naps and I have a ton of energy all of the time! I just woke up today during a movie like wow when did I fall asleep!? I feel like I have narcolepsy or something. This whole pregnancy I've Ben super tired. That's what prompted me to take a pregnancy test. Lol I feel alseep and told my bf I need a pregnancy test. I would not be able to work. I drink some black tea or decaf coffee. Decaf still has about 15-30mg of caffeine. I don't drink it when I first wake up, maybe half way through the day when I need a little kick. Even berries and nuts have a lot of natural energy.

Bettys4thbaby - 28 days ago
My fatigue is unbearable. I am going to make an attempt to eat all energizing food until my appt next Monday if this fatigue isn't gone by then I'm going to demand either something to help me or I need a letter to go on a leave of absense for work... This is my fourth pregnancy & this is not normal. I have never felt even close to this exhausted ever. Any ideas ladies?? Is anyone else still fatigued or feel like me???

Elly4thbaby - 29 days ago
Yes, unstoppable eating has hit me as well, I go out with my little princess for long walks just to stop all day eating :D

brookebaby3 - 29 days ago
I can eat and eat! The huge appetite has hit me! Betty- I wish I could find a Doppler!! I new to go to the thrift shoppes and see what I can find!

brookebaby3 - 29 days ago
Elly- lol your welcome! I had 3 people rub my belly yesterday. I went to old navy and got some jeans and tops.. I look so round now :) I'm glad I'm out of that beer belly stage!

sarennah - 29 days ago
Bettys4th - We got a home doppler the last day of week 13 and were able to find the heartbeat. It did take us between 5 to 15 minutes each time to find it though. One night it took so long I gave up until the next day. But it is possible!

Bettys4thbaby - 29 days ago
So on my lunch break I had some time to kill & stopped at goodwill. I found a baby tv monitor system the one where you can watch the baby instead of just listening. Plus in the bag was a bebe sounds doppler & a baby microphone to talk to baby... All for $12.00 it was like Christmas!!!!! Anyways I tried the doppler and it worked I was really surprised because that is the cheap one you can buy in stores. I actually had it before with my 3rd baby & remember it didn't work so well but this time it did.. anyways I just wanted to let you ladies know that I was able to get the heartbeat with a home doppler and Im just now 14 weeks :) Has anyone else tried a home doppler yet?

rbrencur - 29 days ago
Same here babylove. Its slowly getting better, but my entire first tri no nausea really, but not hungry.

babylove76 - 30 days ago
Anyone else not have much of an appetite? I feel like I have to force myself to eat. And I've never had m/s or nausea, so that's not the reason. It's just a chore to eat it seems

Elly4thbaby - 30 days ago
@brooke - thanks for posting pic of your belly, you made me feel better that I'm not only one with size of 6 month pregnancy - this is comment I got from my neighbor. As it is finally warm spring here no more way how to hide under big coat :)

rbrencur - 30 days ago
I also added a belly photo into the 14 week albums are?

rbrencur - 30 days ago

tinkerfairy - 30 days ago
Ive just had a look at your pic, brookebaby3 and yes I feel quite normal now lol, when I was having my sons I was high up, and with my daughter I was really low, so could be a girl for you :-), I dont really know if mines high or low this time

brookebaby3 - 31 days ago
Tinkerfairy- yes your belly looks normal!! It makes me feel good to see I'm not the only one who is showing so much :) were still so small! I do feel huge also. This is my 3rd, I am showing much faster and different this time. Youd think at 14 weeks you would have a tiny bump!? I uploaded my belly pic also!

tinkerfairy - 31 days ago
Awwww thats brill missniff, I cant wait to see mine again, wont be long as my 20 scan is on 31st may :-) and I cant wait to find out the sex, then I can start buying. Ive uploaded a 14 weeks belly pic,its in my profile and was wondering if this is normal size at this many weeks, also its my fourth baby, I just feel huge already lol

kaylarae - 31 days ago
Yea I haven't been there for that long. But I'm definitely being treated worse than when I told them I was pregnant. I'm just not going back. I don't want to work right now. I've never been without a job.. but now I need a vacation from it all!!

brookebaby3 - 32 days ago
Kayla- if your truly feeling discriminated against you should look into what 3scompany said! Or just quit.. Being pregnant is enough having to deal with an uncomfortable work place on top of everything would be tough! Good luck

3scompany - 32 days ago
Kaylarae-depending on how long you have been at your job, you can apply for fmla. Your doctor has a portion to fill out. This can help modify your duties and your employer is required to comply. Might be worth looking into?

missniff2013 - 32 days ago
Hello week 14! I finally saw my baby by ultrasound last Thursday for the first time. It was dating 2 days older but my OB/GYN said to stick with my original date. I finally saw my OB/GYN last Friday. I am scheduled for my cerclage on the 30th so I am a bit nervous. I also asked about using progesterone this time around. Has anybody else used this to help prevent premature delivery?

sarennah - 32 days ago
How are you sleeping? I have been having increasing difficulty in staying asleep. Multiple visits to the washroom at night, plus I can't seem to get comfortable on either side.

kaylarae - 32 days ago
So today, I decided I'm going to quit my job. My boss made a new rule today I guess, saying I can't eat in my booth. I have major headaches every morning now and I have to eat something to make it ease up. Then she tells me I have to stand outside to greet customers.. which I have never done!!!! I hate the management, ever since I told them I was preg, they have been hounding me. I live in Michigan, and its 30 degrees today. I refuse to get sick for anybody. So my mind is made up, today is my last day here.

brookebaby3 - 32 days ago
I notice that I'm showing much faster this time also! I havnt gained any weight yet. I keep having horrible miscarriage dreams :( I think I need to know if my subchronic hematoma actually healed and hear a heartbeat with the Doppler!

claire0308 - 32 days ago
