Your baby's weight has doubled in two weeks and now weighs about 3.5 ounces! The crown-to-rump length of your growing baby is 4.4 to 4.8 inches. If you spread your hand out opened wide, you can see about how big your baby is.
Your uterus is moving up and is now approximately 1.5 to 2 inches below your navel. You are showing more now and there is a noticeable swelling in your abdomen. At this point in your pregnancy, a 5 to 10 pound weight gain is normal. Other people can probably feel the difference in your lower abdomen if they were to rub your tummy. To be the most comfortable, you should be wearing maternity clothes or clothing that is too large for you. You may have felt your baby move already. However, you might not feel it move every day at this point. As your pregnancy progresses, movements become stronger and more frequent. Feeling your baby move can help reassure you that your baby is doing well. You might also notice that your gums or nose bleed occasionally. This is from the increased blood volume that puts pressure on small blood vessels and capillaries.
Huge changes continue to take place within your developing baby. This week fat begins to form and will continue to do so until he is born. Fat is important to the body's heat production and metabolism. Right now, at 17 weeks, water makes up about 3 ounces and fat 0.018 ounces of your baby's body. In a baby at term, fat makes up about 5.25 pounds of the total average weight of 7.7 pounds. The placenta is continuing to grow at an amazing rate. The placenta will continue to develop in tandem with the fetus and it will weigh more than a pound at birth! By this week, the placenta is large and well established with a network of blood vessels that exchange nutrients and waste.
The eyes are facing more forward. The ears are now close to their final position.
Your baby is more flexible with ability to move head, mouth, lips, arms, wrists, hands, legs, feet, and toes.

Im in Arizona and looking forward to being pregnant in the summer so I don't have to put a new born in a hot car. Today was 100 degrees. It already knocked me on my butt, but I think Id rather deal with the brunt of it then worry about my baby. Cars can get up to 140 degrees during the summer here. YIKES! October should be nice and cool...hopefully ;)
sarebear - 18 days ago
I deffinantly prefer being heavily pregnant in the winter months, that way I can cruise around in a t'shirt whilst everyone is freezing their butts off, in summer I find it overwhelming at the end, just want to lay in front of the airconditioner, last summer pregnancy, I ended up having to wet sheets and put fan on to sleep
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 18 days ago
Well, Kenzie (my 18 month DD) spent a half hour lying down with me in the bottom bunk before heading to her crib. An improvement! She likes to look at the pictures on my phone so I played her lullabye ('baby mine' from dumbo) & we watched the slideshow setting. What I realized was that it was so sentimental to watch pictures of her from birth to current. My lil big girl.

Happymom- my daughter was october, my son was late August. I never catch a break from those summer months.
happymomv - 18 days ago
Dragonsoccer - Oh no! What a day you had! I hope you get some rest this evening. And some water! It was HOT here today...our first summery day of the year. I had been looking forward to it but now I think I prefer things a bit cooler. :) I was pregnant during the winter last time so this should be interesting...

I don't know if belly side has to do with placenta side either, the theory is based on whether your placenta is on the right side or the left, but again it's just a theory. I'm not sure which side mine is on my doctor just said its not low which is good. Never said a side
threebagsfool - 18 days ago
I hadn't heard before about the side of the belky indicating gender. My belly has leaned far to the right (belly button 1.5 inches off center) in both pregnancies. I had one boy and one girl, but I don't know if belly side has to do with placenta side. I have been having hip pain and popping the past two days. The doctor recommended to put a pillow between my knees when sleeping, but it is so uncomfortable that I can't sleep like that.

Ok, for 1, I'm an ass. My car needs to be inspected but I need to replace a wiper part. Regardless, I've been hunting down this part for months & finally the junk yard by me gotit. Husband took car, but I need it... so I put the baby in the stroller & went the 3 miles (maybe 2.5) to the junk yard. Get there & the part was broken. Ugh! Walked the 3 miles BACK. Do you ladies think I brought water to drink? Nope. Wasnt even smart enough to drink some before I left. 5-6 miles, pushing a stroller in 65-70 degree weather, no water. Yup- I'm an ass. A terribly sore ass. Everything hurts & my head is pounding. Drinking water now... Next. I really doubt i'm having a girl. Feels like both boy pregnancies I've had, & my placenta is on my right. But at 14 weeks, there was no penis in sight. Confirming on 5/18, so we'll see.

I've also noticed that she is SO much more opinionated and willful during the day! I've got a 14 month old dictator living in my house!
happymomv - 19 days ago
Thanks 2Taureses and Dragonsoccer. I think I know what I need to do, it's just hard to actually commit to it! We sleep trained her at four months and have had a pretty good sleeper. I would say she wakes up about 5-7 nights a month which isn't horrible. And she sleeps 12 + hours, even with the night wakings. When we sleep trained her, we went with the 'extinction method' meaning we never went back into the room once she was down. We found that she would just get more worked up if we went in there. She's always standing in her crib so it's not like I can pat her back. But, if this is really related to separation anxiety maybe I should go in and talk to her? Agh I don't know what to do but I can't have TWO babies up at night!!
2Tauruses - 19 days ago
I just read that you can tell the gender of your baby based on the side your placenta is on.. Says if it's on the right it's a boy and if it's on the left it's a girl. Ultrasounds are mirror images though so they need to be flipped. Does this hold true for any of you ladies who already know what you're having?
2Tauruses - 19 days ago
Happy- I also know your child is a little bit older but the same thing applies. You don't want to be waking up in the middle of the night for baby feedings then because of your other child, too! You'll never get to sleep!
2Tauruses - 19 days ago
Happymom- The best thing to do is let them soothe themselves! I know it's hard for a little while, but I'm telling you, within a week, both you and baby will be so much happier!! I had to do it with my son to get him sleeping through the night and he never wakes up in the middle of the night, and hasn't since about 4 months since I did the soothe-yourself method. Of course I didn't let him cry forever, I'd give him about 15 minutes then go rub his back for about a minute (never taking him out of the crib) then next time give it 20 minutes.. After a few nights you'll be so glad you did it! I sure was! And about children being more attached, my son soo is too! He wasn't at daycare much last week because the owners daughter was sick so he was with me Tuesday-Sunday non-stop.. Needless to say he's not happy about going every morning. :(
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 19 days ago
My daughter is a brat, a night waker, & shy. She's also glued to my leg since I'm out of work. I take her to the park & library & such to socialize her as much as possible. getting strict with her at night has helped me. As long as she's not in a full blown panic I give her the chance to try to sooth herself. We tried laying down in the 'big bed' last night & she had a 2 hour long complete PANIC ATTACK. ugh. Getting her out of crib will not be easy. Anyway, someone told me, as long as you allow a behavior to continue it probably will.
happymomv - 19 days ago
I drank almost an entire bottle of water during the night, woo too! And I didn't wake up to pee every 20 minutes either...bonus! Now, if only my daughter hadn't woken up again at 2am. Sigh. I know we've discussed night waking before but I am so baffled!! She is having a little more separation anxiety during the day (not that I go anywhere, ha!) and I've noticed her becoming shy around new people. When she wakes up in the middle of the night, she calls for me, which she never did before. Do you think this is all related to separation anxiety? Should I wait it out and continue what I'm doing, which is soothing her back to sleep with a little cuddle, or do I need to get strict? :( She falls back asleep within 15 minutes so it's no big deal, but I don't want to create bad habits.
brookebaby3 - 19 days ago
If your having hard time drinking water try drinking with a straw. Or if you have been drinking ice cold water try drinking room temperature water. I love water and sometimes cold water isn't as good and easy to drink as room temp.
brookebaby3 - 19 days ago
Maybe my hospitals equipment..? With my other kids it was always 18-20 weeks but they got a new ultrasound lab last year so now its 17-20. Also my doctor recommended me going in at 17 weeks because I had a blood clot on the placenta and stopped working and put on light bed rest.. I need to be able to work some again and would feel better knowing if its healed now. Thanks for the answers!

Oranges are great. Limes. Raspberries. Strawberries. A lil juice?
mharter04@yahoo.com - 19 days ago
I was very concerned that I wasn't showing until Sat morning I woke up and boom there it was! Maybe it's that Sat was the first day that I didn't have to wear a sweatshirt and jacket all day so I actually noticed. I do sometimes feel like its just fat though because its not hard, it's all mushy. I don't mind people touching my belly at all but it's a little uncomfortable at this point when they do and then suddenly aren't sure if its a baby or not haha. As for the water, I just can't sem to drink it! I HATE the taste (or the lack of taste). I also hate lemon so I was thinking of putting some orange slices in it. Any other suggestions?
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 19 days ago
It helps to make it fun. I try to drink a pint of h2o before I have to pee. Epic fail but you guys are inspiring me. On my 2nd glass!
threebagsfool - 19 days ago
I'm noticably pregnant right now, and have been a couple of weeks. I've got one of those really short torsos so there is only room to grow out I guess. For water drinking, since I do a lot of driving, I keep water with me then. It seems to work, everytime I hit a red light I drink some water. It's like a fun pregnancy drinking game.
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 20 days ago
2tauruses, alright, that's it! I'm dumping this stupid coffee & starting on cup #1 H2O. I can't let you win all alone. I am thoroughly impressed though. :) I never order soda out. I refuse to pay $3 a GLASS when I pay $1 a bottle. I always order 'lemon water'. Anyway, about the belly- my son didn't show until 19, my angel (boy) left us @ 20 weeks & nobody knew I was pregnant & my girl showed since CONCEPTION. They are saying this is a girl but I'm thinking their wrong...
2Tauruses - 20 days ago
Dragon- I went to lunch for some Mexican food and I got water when everyone else at the table got soda. I WANTED soda but went with water. Needless to say I'm two cups down for the day. WOOHOO, more to go though :) I'm noticeably pregnant.. you can tell if I have a T-shirt on and pretty much anything I wear. My stomach, I wouldn't say, is hard or soft. Kind of in between. I started out between 125 lbs and 130lbs, and everyone's bellies grow differently.. With my first I wasn't noticeably pregnant until 20 weeks at least. I'm sure it will pop before you know it ;)
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 20 days ago
Are all of you 'obviously pregnant'? People can tell if I wear the right top or sundress. Jeans & t-shirt nobody can tell. I don't think you could even tell Naked. Dunno. But if I push on the belly under my navel it's all soft. You guys?
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 20 days ago
2tauruses- glad it's working. I keep trying to make myself feel guilty but it's not working. After this first cup of morning coffee (that I've been nursing & reheating for 3 hours to get only halfway through) I'll fill my sports bottle. Then my daughter & son will chug my water down even though they have sports bottles of their own. Ugh!
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 20 days ago
Fertile nothing. I keep getting pregnant cause we just love us some good ole fashion sexcapades.
2Tauruses - 20 days ago
And it's a good thing you're making me feel guilty so I do something about it.. ;)
2Tauruses - 20 days ago
&& Dragon- you're making me feel guilty about not drinking enough water.. After I finish my fruit and veggies drink, I will keep refilling my 12 oz bottle with water! Going to keep trying to do it and stop bringing juice and such to work!
2Tauruses - 20 days ago
This is baby number 2 for me.. I'm only 24 so I could have more but babies are expensive so we will see and talk about it later on. I keep getting preggo on BC though because I'm apparently fertile mertile!
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 20 days ago
I'll be 34 right around the time this one comes along. My 9 year old is a HUGE help. he'll be 10 & #2 with be nearly 2 when this baby comes. My plan was to be done by 35 (because of the higher risks after 35) but I really hate the 2 on 1 ratio.
sweettart3 - 20 days ago
We are almost halfway there ladies! I didn't realize there were so many with big families either. Lots of kids are fun and not as hard as it might sound cuz the little ones grow up some and help out with the new little ones. I love all mine. I feel like I'm getting up there in age too. Bound to happen eventually I guess.
sarebear - 20 days ago
lol...yeah this is my first pregnancy in the old age range lol :(
sarebear - 20 days ago
I don.t know how I did it when I had 4 babies under 4, I-m deffinantly not that energetic. I'm very lucky that my older kids entertain the near 3 year old and help out with everything. I am still feel nervous about having a 3 yr old and a new born, especially because she has been spoilt, I believed I wasn't having anymore soooo was enjoying it a little too much lol, I don't know how she'll go with it all
kords mommy - 20 days ago
I will be 36 when this baby is board and my husband will be 42...you could say we are older parents. =) Wit ha 2 year old and newborn it will be tough...the sleepless nights are tough for us!
happymomv - 20 days ago
Wow, a lot of big families on this board! I don't know how you ladies do it. I think if I had the luxury of spacing them out I would have more. But I will be 33 when this next baby is born and I feel like if I wanted a third I'd have to do it right away. I have NO idea how I'm going to manage an 18 month old and a newborn! My daughter is going through a stubborn phase and I'm just hoping she will grow out of it by September. :)
sarebear - 20 days ago
hope it all goes wells Austin. I'll be 36 not long after this baby, so i'm going to have a tubal ligation after this baby, I seem to be getting even more fertile with age, my body just wants to be pregnant, I don't feel like I could cope with another bout of morning sickness ever again...just want to love my little surprise babies...I am very blessed to have had so many beautiful children.

Hello week 17!!! 3 weeks until i have my anatamy scan.... and i pray that the placenta moved so i can have a normal delivery and not a c section..... please pray for me!!!
fe1ix78 - 20 days ago
#3 for me too! We are thinking about one more after this but we will see how this goes. I'm already 35 so I guess I'd need to hurry a bit but I want my body back! Is that selfish? Lol my first is 14 and 2nd is 2 so if we had another after 3 we would only have 3 little ones not 4 so it's not as scary I guess!
sarebear - 20 days ago
this will be number 6 for me, and my partner has 1 biological and 1 adoptive son, so 8 in total. I only have one younger one, my older ones are between 16 and 12, my plan was to have 3 children but went for number 3 and we had twins lol...I love my big family and loving being a mum to little ones I realise how quick they grow up, you have to cherish every moment
jjmommy2 - 20 days ago
This will be #3 for me as well but same in total we will have 5 between two of us! I don't mind big family.
threebagsfool - 20 days ago
This is going to be my third, but I have two older stepkids, too. In total we have five. I would have never thought that I would have a big family. I am happy about it, though.
kords mommy - 20 days ago
2 will be as high as we go just because of the cost of daycare...with 2 in daycare we will be spending $1000 a month. Can't imagine writing a chack for $1,500!
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 20 days ago
#3 currently baking. Was happy to stop @ 2, until our loss. Now I wouldn't go higher than 4.
happymomv - 20 days ago
Dragonsoccermom - I have really been trying to drink more water!! Can't say that I feel much better. :( I am so behind on sleep and rest and just can't seem to catch up. I really feel like putting my head down and just crying. I want to feel normal again! I just keep reminding myself what a blessing this all is. And that I never have to do it again if I don't want to, haha! Seriously though my husband and I have been having lots of conversations about stopping at two kids. It might make sense for our lifestyle. We live in an area where most people have a ton of kids though, so we'd be the weird ones! What do you girls think? Are you planning big families or happy with one or two?
SkylarDamien - 21 days ago
BrookeBaby3-We originally had our anatomy scan done at 13 weeks beleive it or not! The Doc said then that he thought it might be a boy but it could be just the umbilical cord in the way and he would try again, so we had a repeat scan done at 16wks, 5 days and It is Def a boy! No doubt about it!
Dragonsoccermom*teamBLUE* - 21 days ago
Oh chocolate! Why must you punish me for loving you so??! My throat is on FIRE

And so it begins- every time I starting yelling too loudly on the field (coaching/cheering/yelling) I felt like I was going to pee my pants.

Carried around a 20oz water bottle all day as we jumped from game to park to park to game. Barely drank half of it. I suck! How are the rest of you doing?
