Born & Birth stories

Thumb-sucking at 18 weeks....

By week 18 of your pregnancy, your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5 to 5.5 inches long. Your baby continues to develop fat layers and weighs about 5.25 ounces. Your baby will continue to grow and develop, but the rapid growth will slow down for a little while. You will be able to feel your uterus just below your bellybutton. If you put your fingers sideways to measure, you can feel your uterus about two finger-widths below your bellybutton. At this point of your pregnancy, your uterus is approximately the size of a cantaloupe. Although weight gain varies from woman to woman, your total weight gain at this point should be 10 to 13 pounds.

At this time if you had an ultrasound, heart abnormalities can be detected. If the ultrasound technician detects abnormalities, further ultrasound exams may be ordered to follow the baby's development. There is still space available in your uterus and your baby will be active for periods at a time. Your baby may sit cross legged or turn somersaults.

Around this time, your baby becomes more sensitive to the outside world and shows her presence through powerful kicks and prods. The bones through which sound is passed to the inner ear have hardened and the parts of the brain that receives and processes nerve signals from the ears are developing. This means that your baby can hear now. Your baby will get used to familiar sounds, such as your heart beating, familiar voices, blood rushing through the umbilical cord and other daily routine sounds. Your baby will become startled if he hears a loud sound.

If you have a stethoscope at home, you can now hear the baby's heartbeat yourself.

cins, I love rare meat too..your lucky you dont have a taste for it right now, cause were not supposed to be eating it...I on the other hand would love a big red filet, and a glass of dry cabernet!!!mmmmm..:)

Becs - 1.5 hours ago
my eating habits have definately changed. i didn't used to eat meat before about a week ago! now my favourite thing to scoff is beef slices on brown bread with cheese melted on top + a massive pile of pickled red cabbage..very odd indeed! the fun of being pregnant :)

gsummertime - 3.2 hours ago
tjones...love your names...jackson is on our list as well...and I love brooklynn!!! we are going to pick a name when we find out the sex, and then not tell anyone till the baby is born, cause we dont want anyones reaction to jinx it...

cins - 9.9 hours ago
Hi!! Just want to find out if any of your eating habits changed? I never had m/s, but the last 3 weeks I can't stand red meat!! And I used to love my meat medium rare!!!

lysski - 10.4 hours ago
I've been eating alot too. I ate too much that sometimes my tummy just can't take it but yet, my average gain is 2kg per doctor's visit.

kiwilady - 11.5 hours ago
tjones. u shouldnt worry wot other people think even thou i know its hard too sometimes. at the end of the day its your baby so name him or her whatever you want. p.s. i love the name brooklyn. one of my workmates just had a baby with the same name so its a pitty i cant use it too.

tjones05 - 11.7 hours ago
Ok so i find out the sex on the 14th... We have a couple names picked out... if its a girl we like Brooklyn, a boy we like Jackson.... Everyone we told those names to in our family or friends hates the names... we tell them and they say ...'oh' and pause.. what to do?

Ina - 13.4 hours ago
I actually felt the baby kick me today! It FREAKED me out! It happened twice. I jumped BOTH times! The people in church must have thought I was crazy. My BF looks at me and says.. 'Are you ok??' It was too funny. I'm so afraid I am going to react that way EVERYTIME he kicks me!

annabanana96 - 14 hours ago
Week 18! Yeah! We are so close to halfway, yet so far away! I am starting to feel the baby a lot now, well, I hope its the baby and not just dinner!

lilmamaaua - 2 days ago
Ina I also just moved here in the past year and found out about a group of international community( mainly Americans) here that organize social events, fundraisers etc etc. I'm sure there's something in your area like that. Even some pregnancy yoga etc classes would give you the chance to meet some women you have something in common with!

prettypenny - 2 days ago
Wow lilmamaaua, that makes for a great morning! Little Kai is going to love his stuff!

Ina - 2 days ago
lilmama..I'm so envious. I wish I knew more people here. I've only been in this city for a year. My entire family is back in Texas. So, I really don't have anyone to go shopping with or do cool things like that with.

lilmamaaua - 2 days ago
I had volunteered this morning at a garage sale and wow did I get some bargains!! A brand new Graco carseat- Free for helping out!! A ton of baby boys new clothes from old Navy, Gap, Benneton etc, a pregnancy body pillow- never used! Some never used bassinet and crib sheets! Some pregnancy and motherhood books, a rug, some brand new soft toys and snuggle blankets.. All for the grand total of $60!!!! I am so glad I hauled myself out of bed at 6am to go help out!!! I also was given a box of gorgeous maternity wear by a friend while I was there!!!

bmadeline - 2 days ago
Hey! Been reading since about week 6 but just signed up now. We're going for our first US tomorrow- very excited! We aren't going to find out the sex- want it to be a suprise. Anyone else live near Central Oregon? We just moved here and I'm trying to meet other couples who are pregnant!

prettypenny - 2 days ago
I posted a gender poll. It also includes: not going to find out and haven't found out yet. Please check it out and vote.

NinaK - 2 days ago
I had my ultrasound last week and found out I am having a boy (the tech was 80% sure). It was tough to see the sex because he was doing what the nurse refered to as 'head spins' the entire time, the tech was laughing at how active he is at 18 weeks. Is there any reason to be concerned that he wont sit still? (this is my first pregnancy so I don't really know whats normal) I'm expecting him to be a handful!

NinaK - 2 days ago
If anybody is having trouble with their baby registry i suggest buying the book 'Baby Bargains' It outlines what you must have, where you can get the best price for each item as well as safety guidelines. I think amazon.com has it for sale around $12.

Ina - 2 days ago
I had my ultrasound yesterday. Everything looks great. (Other than a low sitting placenta) They're going to keep an eye on it and say it should move up as the uterus grows. We're having a boy. We bought our first baby outfit. I'm already having dreams. Not very good ones.

lauren3509 - 3 days ago
had my u/s on the 2nd im having a little boy!! im so excited..im still figureing out a name ahh this is going to be so hard.

lilsunshinesmommy - 3 days ago
Just had my ultrasound today and we're having a little boy!!! I would've been so happy either way, but just knowing is SO exciting! I want to buy him things!

MRS.FIELDS - 3 days ago
HELP,I am feeling like bubble inside…Is that the baby moving?? It hurts sometime.

15yearsapart - 3 days ago
Well, I got excited because I thought I was obviously pregnant to other people, but I posted in the 'Bellies' photobook and everyone says that I'm really not showing. I also don't feel any movement that I know for sure is the baby. I think it may be digestion. I should be patient, but it's tough sometimes.

trying4baby3 - 3 days ago
Hi all - 18 wks today - Yay!

Sara B - 3 days ago
Ok so its getting really frustrating for me! I don't feel any movement all day but at night (I think) I feel all kinds of movement. The thing is, I'm not sure if I'm half dreaming or not so I'm not sure if the movement is real. Last night I felt the most but now that I think about it, I don't remember what it felt like so did I really feel it? GRRRRRRRR!!! Anybody else dealing with this?

lilmamaaua - 3 days ago
Grrr I just fired my cleaning lady! She has been soooo unreliable the past few months and every week without fail she either cancels, switches the day or else just doesn't show up... I just got home and was looking forward to s clean house but no.. dishes in the sink etc etc.. So I call her and supposedly she is sick. again.. I told her I don't want her anymore as I need someone reliable etc etc and no apology.. She was just concerned that the money from the last time she took her lazy ass here get to her.. I was planning on inviting friends over for some dinner in about 2 hours but now I can't..!!! HOW ANNOYING!!!!

skyblue882 - 3 days ago
bellajenna - I'm not finding out the sex either..so long as my will power holds out. There are too few surprises in life and I already have one boy & one girl..so either way it will be a great surprise.

mandiandburger - 3 days ago
Oh, BTW, she ended up having a girl!

mandiandburger - 3 days ago
One of my friends had 4-5 ultrasounds and they could never tell her the sex of the baby! It always had it's legs crossed or turned sideways... They kept giving her more ultrasounds so she could find out, but her baby never ever cooperated. Or else the tech was just that bad at their job! Who knows...

lainyj - 3 days ago
elizabethw - i wish i would have thought to ask the tech that. I was just so nervous and they were really behind and rushed, when she said babys not gonna show us, i didnt say anything, I wish sometimes I was more bold and would have just asked to look abit longer or what we could do to get baby to move. Sometimes Im so afraid to make someone mad or inconvenience them I just dont say anything, but always regret it after. Maybe once Im a mom ill learn to speak my mind more! Lol!

ErinFirstTimer - 3 days ago
Names we are considering: Elise if it's a girl. We are set on that one. Jonas, Moses, Cyrus, Jasper for boys names. We are still considering.

ErinFirstTimer - 3 days ago
I've gained 14 pounds since my first appointment! I have never weighed this much in my life! I guess it's a good thing though. I just have to make sure to keep the sugars and white flour down!

elizabethw - 3 days ago
I would be so upset if I went in for our u/s and couldn't tell the sex!! I was told also if that happens to ask to go to the bathroom and jump around a bit! That should get the baby awake and moving! :) Don't know if it would really work though!

jesstickuh - 3 days ago
Wahoo I am in week 18!!! How awesome is that!!! I am super excited, I find out the babies sex Monday!! I will be 18 weeks 4 days! So please pray the baby corporates with us!!

kerrylea - 3 days ago
my friend had her baby last night at 10:55pm after 4 days late and i cant help feeling envious that she has her baby and i still have 22 weeks to go lol i will just have to be patient and she was only in labour for a few hours lucky thing.

daffy - 3 days ago
lilmamaaua- Our baby boy s name is kai. I really love the name. This time i feel like im having a girl.. i like the name Jasmine at the moment.

hollybobollys1st - 4 days ago
danyale2323- We are having great weather!!! Bring a light jacket though!

danyale2323 - 4 days ago
Hey everyone, I am leaving for Virginia tomorrow a.m. to see my family for the weekend. I wont be back till late Sunday night, so I'll see you all in week 19! Have a great Friday and an even better weekend.

Sara B - 4 days ago
I drank mine in the car on the way there and in the waiting room. I have a 20 min drive to the u/s place so it was plenty of time to drink it. She mellowed out towards the end of the u/s too so I think I did it perfectly. Good luck!

Ina - 4 days ago
Sara, I will have to do that. I'll be at work, so I may have to get my BF to bring some to the appointment. How soon do you have to drink it?

Sara B - 4 days ago
Ina- I was nervous about the baby not cooperating too so somebody told me to drink cold orange juice before I went and it worked! She was awake and moving around and they got more than enough great shots. It was wonderful. I had my 18 week u/s today and they did some 3d/4d. Amazing! I put some pictures of the ultrasound up on my profile. Feel free to check them out ladies!
