Thumb-sucking at 18 weeks....

By week 18 of your pregnancy, your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5 to 5.5 inches long. Your baby continues to develop fat layers and weighs about 5.25 ounces. Your baby will continue to grow and develop, but the rapid growth will slow down for a little while. You will be able to feel your uterus just below your bellybutton. If you put your fingers sideways to measure, you can feel your uterus about two finger-widths below your bellybutton. At this point of your pregnancy, your uterus is approximately the size of a cantaloupe. Although weight gain varies from woman to woman, your total weight gain at this point should be 10 to 13 pounds.

At this time if you had an ultrasound, heart abnormalities can be detected. If the ultrasound technician detects abnormalities, further ultrasound exams may be ordered to follow the baby's development. There is still space available in your uterus and your baby will be active for periods at a time. Your baby may sit cross legged or turn somersaults.

Around this time, your baby becomes more sensitive to the outside world and shows her presence through powerful kicks and prods. The bones through which sound is passed to the inner ear have hardened and the parts of the brain that receives and processes nerve signals from the ears are developing. This means that your baby can hear now. Your baby will get used to familiar sounds, such as your heart beating, familiar voices, blood rushing through the umbilical cord and other daily routine sounds. Your baby will become startled if he hears a loud sound.

If you have a stethoscope at home, you can now hear the baby's heartbeat yourself.

nuggetlovin- definitely eases my mind!! Been crouched over, and terrified. Thanks alot :)

nuggetlovin - 1.4 hours ago
englishmama- I'm from week 24 but saw ur question about cysts. With my 1st I didn't even know I was pregnant yet, but could barely walk my pain was so bad. I laid in bed for 2 days in tears before my boyfriend told my mom and MADE me go to the er (I was only 17). To my surprise, I was pregnant and the pregnancy hormones caused an ovarian cyst to burst. After a few days I was back to my new normal of beinig preggo and my baby was born perfect! Hope that helps ease your mind.

Englishmama - 1.5 hours ago
And thankyou mgbjen :)

Englishmama - 1.5 hours ago
Quick question ladies: I mentioned earlier this week that I had a UTI. The OB talked to me this morning and said it was possible I had a cyst on my ovary burst, possibly from the progesterone, explaining the pain I still feel. He isn't alarmed because the sonogram looks normal. Anyone else have a simliar experience?

mgbjen - 1.6 hours ago
Englishmama - What a beautiful name Kai is! Congrats for Team Blue :-)

4thandlast - 1.8 hours ago
Last day in week 18 and already feeling very pregnant. Even had the comments - wow you look really pregnant (well that's because I am!!)

Englishmama - 2.7 hours ago
Just found out I'm Team Blue! Very excited. Decided to name him Kai Matthew. Currently, he weighs 8oz and runs all over his uterus lol. Pretty amazing moment.

commongoal - 3.1 hours ago
Hehehe....my belly has gone from nothing to WOOW BABY! =) How is it that we grow bellies overnight?

klderoos - 3.3 hours ago
wedward- same as for the girls!!! everything is sickly pink and my little girl is a bit of a tom boy so I have resorted to putting her in a few boys things with some pink for good measure, I say go for as many hand me downs as possible, my daughter has two huge suitcases of clothes she has grown out of and is only 14 months

mgbjen - 5 hours ago
Had my US yesterday and they could not see anything, babys legs were all curled up and the umbilical cord was in the way...Oh well it waved at us and got some beautiful shots regardless. I was on the fence about finding out what it was so I guess this is just how it is suppose to be, I will find out in April. :-) Hope you all have a great weekend!!

wedward - 5.2 hours ago
ama-I'm with you on the gender specific clothing. My son is 16 months and EVERYTHING out there is either football or soccer or basketball or racecars!!! I guess you have to buy higher end if you want something with a little personality, but who wants to spend $50 on an outfit when they wear it for two months!!!

commongoal - 5.5 hours ago
avaelayne : My opinion (we are NOT finding out what we are having either)there is plenty out there that could be for both BOY or GIRL. My sister-in-law is 8 months pregnant and she decided to go unknown as well, she just had a baby shower and she received so many beautiful awesome things that are for both boy and girl. Trust me that baby is not going to be deprived of anything...BOY or GIRL. That made me feel ever more excited that we were going unknown as well =D

readyfor2 - 5.6 hours ago
I am with you on the baby clothes. I don't like cute-sie clothes, with bears and hearts and characters I much prefer plain, clean, classic clothes like Ralph Lauren. My baby daughter can wear alot of my son's clothes now too as a result.

readyfor2 - 5.6 hours ago
ama - sorry to hear about the croup, my son had that at 15 months and it was just awful! he had hand-foot-and-mouth disease twice this year too and now strep. when does it end?

ama-llama - 5.8 hours ago
Well we found out Hunter has Croup AGAIN. As far as colors go I know Im probably in the minority here but I really dislike 90% of baby clothes on the market. Im not into the whole football blue for boy pink princess for girl. So all the stuff I bought for my son is either red or green or black or neutral. If its a girl this time she will wear it all too :P

Juniwoo - 7.8 hours ago
Avaelayne - I got a neutral baby keepsake book from M&S over here in UK. Try www.m&s.co.uk?? I'm having more success finding cute neutral baby stuff online than I do in the shops. Hope that helps.

avaelayne - 7.9 hours ago
Thanks for your opinion girls, the reason why i started thinking about this is because i went shopping yesterday at a couple of different places and could find nothing that was unisex. Have yall ever noticed that?? I wanted to get a baby book to keep during pregnancy, all they have is pink or blue. Maybe ill try babys-r-us. But i think i will end up finding out, im bringing more stress on myself then necessary.

ama-llama - 8.2 hours ago
I agree Ready, anytime you find out is special and will be a suprise. Im also dealing with a sick toddler. Hunter was up all night last night with breathing problems. We took him to Night Time Pediatrics- and it was closed! Almost went to ER. mY husband is home with him today and Im running on nothing- you know that feeling of being there but not BEING THERE.Yeah thats me right now.

Juniwoo - 8.4 hours ago
avaelayne - here's my take on it, for what its worth! I don't want to find out either (although I'm tempted). Its not that you won't have ANYTHING, you just won't have anything blue or pink.. trust me, the baby won't mind!! And with baby 2 I'll probably find out and have the fun of knowing the team colours then.

readyfor2 - 8.5 hours ago
ava - I think in your situation it would be better and much less stressful to be prepared. If you find out the gender on Wednesday or on delivery day it is still a surprise! I say 'go for it'!

avaelayne - 8.5 hours ago
Im alittle confused about what to do. We were originally not going to find out the sex of this baby because i think it would be a great suprise and i have no real desire to know ahead of time. But we are trying to get our house on the market and sold by the time the baby comes. We are moving back closer to where im from. Problem is im thinking that we will be moving right around delivery time and if we dont know the sex we wont have anything and we will be so unprepared. I really dont know what to do ladies, i wanted a suprise but think it might be to much to do after the baby is born. Please let me know, my ultrasound is scheduled for wednesday.

Juniwoo - 8.5 hours ago
readyfor2 - I sympathise with you as it must be much harder being pregnant 2nd time around with a little one to look after as well as often feeling crappy yourself! Even give NHS 24 a call and settle your mind about your son. And buy him the bloody goldfish - to hell with DH!! You're the one that'll end up cleaning out the fish tank anyway :)

readyfor2 - 8.5 hours ago
lucy - thanks. I did take LO to GP on Wed. and he is taking antibiotics. x

lucyb - 8.6 hours ago
oh poor you! readyfor2. Settle your mind if your worried about your little one and take him to the doctor. i hate having tearful like your having - you will get through this and things will look better in the morning:)

readyfor2 - 8.9 hours ago
I am so much more emotional with this pregnancy. Right now I feel so sad and overwhelmed. My poor toddler is sick and I just feel so helpless and confused about what to do (not 'like me'' at all, as I am a nurse and can usually manage with health issues). He has strep throat, fever, vomiting, not eating and has the worst diarrhea I have ever experienced in my life. I have terrible sciatica and can hardly walk. I just want to curl up into a ball under my duvet and cry all day. My DH made plans a long time ago to go out with some old friends tonight so he isn't coming home from work until late, or even not at all until tomorrow morning!! ARGH! We got into a big fight about it last night. Also I wanted to get my son a little gift, a goldfish, today to cheer him up and I asked my DH and he screamed and yelled at me like I was getting Great Dane or something! So I can't get him a little goldfish even though he loves fish. I am so upset about this and have been crying all morning. Thanks for listening I just needed to vent. x

genny - carrying low and across is said to be a girl and high and out front, a boy. Was true for me with both my pregnancies!

readyfor2 - 9.6 hours ago
ally - I feel the same. I hear the HB with doppler and some days feel the baby doing acrobatics and some days absolutly nothing. It worries me too.

allyandty - 9.9 hours ago
i have a question, is my baby ok? i have a doppler so i hear it all the time but why is it that i don't feel it moving? this is my 3rd baby.

gennyr0315 - 10.8 hours ago
Hey girls I got an ultrasound at my job and we found out its a GIRL im so excited.... everybody was surprised though cause im carrying low dey say wen u carry low its a boy is dat true?????

louisec - 11.2 hours ago
commongoal: Hi, it is confusing to say the least. A pregnancy is often considered to be nine months. This can be confusing because 40 weeks easily leads to 10 months, however, months are not exactly four weeks long. there is only 1 mth that is 28 days long. If you count every new month on the 21st you will be 36 wks on the 21st of April. I am due on the 23rd of April and i am 18 wks today, I count on a calender from friday 17th July (my lMP date) and i get exactly 18 wks. This is 4.5 mths. I dont go by months really, i always think in weeks. midwives say that there are on average, 266 days in a pregnancy, 280 if you count the first 2wks. divide 280 days, you get 40 wks. We are so near our due dates, Cool

I love that somjeone else feels they will still be the princess surrounded by boys! And for everyone with moods, go to your mums, I stayed last night, staying till sunday and already I feel better!!! Off to walk her dog and get some fesh air, man I feel good today!!!!!

Berrymama - 16.7 hours ago
Hello Ladies Pray all Happy and Healthy Babies. Found out we are again on Team Blue. Glad to still be the Queen in the Kingdom. Did a poll regarding ideas for a shower if the gender will not be known until birth. If you don't mind do you mind commenting. Thanks It is for my cousin who is due a week before me.

Heather2007 - 20.4 hours ago
Just found out today that I am having my second little boy. I was wanting a girl But I am just glad that my baby is healthy.

magadociousrex - 20.9 hours ago
Put me down for team blue!! I'm having a boy!! We're gonna name him Roland Ira Moshe :D

mgbjen - 23.8 hours ago
Tanyce55 - I am in BC as well and I am going for my ultrasound today, I really hope I get a tech who is nice enough to tell me! It sucks that we can't find out what we are having unless we pay for the 3D scan!! I will let you know tomorrow if they tell me, if not I guess it will be a surprise in April. I am also not hungry at all! So nervous about the US tonight, hope everything is A-OK....Wish me luck! I also just got a call from my mid-wife and my triple screen came back negative!! Now I feel much better about going to my ultrasound.

stephanienbaby - 1 days ago
ITS A GIRL whatc pleasant surprise. everything was blue now we have to get pink stuff. and im actually 5 days earlier now. so im week 18 3 days. due april 20th now.

lovebeachchick - 1 days ago

klderoos - 1 days ago
kneebaby- why are they making you wait so long?

kneebaby1978 - 1 days ago
I have 18 days left to find out the sex of the baby... So upsetting since I will be 19 weeks tomorrow! Congrats to everyone of you who already know!

SandraD - 1 days ago
Thats funny, I seen someone was talking about the emotional part of pregnancy...my husband just said to me today that I have been pretty good this pregnancy and have not lost it yet. He said for me last time it wasnt till about week 20 or 21.....and I will admit last time I had gotten bad, I was at a point that I didnt even like myself. So I hope things keep going well for me....but I know its bound to happen...lol...Today is my first day in week 18 and I have an apt in less then 2 weeks to find out the sex, looking forward to that.

4thandlast - 1 days ago
All I want to do is eat and eat as well. Luckily all I want to eat is stone fruit. Here is Oz it is just warming up so its cherries, mangoes, nectrines, peaches AND sooo expensive ... but happier than hamburgers and milkshakes (last pregnancy!)

klderoos - 1 days ago
kellys1stbaby- good on you for quiting smoking! it is such a hard thing to do and so benificial for your baby (and you) I'm the same can't stand the thought of vege and just want to eat things like sweets and buns and muffins and pasteries!!! What a mess.

victoriak - 1 days ago
Add me team PINK, so excited!!! Now for a name. tanyce55, there is a UC baby in BC not sure exactly where, my SIL lived in surrey and went, they will tell you the sex, its a bit expensive, but totally worth it. I have gone with my 2 and plan to with this one to.

tanyce55 - 1 days ago
Anyone else feeling weird through this pregnancy! Im so tierd, eatting constantly, shitty food to boot and im so emotional!! My husband is being so unsupportive and insensitive!! I feel like I am going to loose my mind!! ALSO u ladies in the US are so lucky here in BC Canada they dont tell what the sex is...some ppl find the odd tech who will but is so frusterating because I really want to know and its my 3rd baby so I think they sould make an exception for me...I guess I will find out tomorrow at my ultrasound!! Wish me luck!!

commongoal - 1 days ago
