Born & Birth stories

Congratulations! This week marks the half way point of your pregnancy. It has been 18 weeks since the date of conception and your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5.6 to 6.4 inches. The fetus weighs about 9 ounces and your belly definitely has an obvious bulge. Your waistline has expanded and is no longer visible. Your uterus has now moved up enough that it is pushing your abdomen outwards. The top of your uterus is even with or just below your navel.

Sex organs are showing clearly on this girl

For the remainder of your pregnancy, the growing uterus puts pressure on your lungs, stomach and kidneys. This will make you feel short of breath, the need to urinate more frequently and can cause indigestion. The added pressure on your abdomen can also cause your bellybutton to protrude and cause an `outy` instead of an `inny`. Many pregnant women begin to notice stretch marks around this time as well. Your abdominal muscles are being stretched and pushed apart as your baby grows inside of you.

Your baby's skin begins to thicken this week and will develop four layers. Your baby's sebaceous glands secrete a waxy substance called vernix caseosa. Your baby will be born with this wax and it will look like paste. The vernix caseosa is crucial because it protects the fetus' fragile skin from the continuous immersion in amniotic fluid. Lanugo hairs secure the vernix caseosa in place and it is thick around the eyebrows. Scalp hair and toenails are beginning to form at this point. Hair can also be seen on the upper lip and eyebrows.

Around twenty weeks, most doctors will order a routine ultrasound to check the baby's development. Measurements will be taken and the sonogram technician will check to make sure there are no defects or abnormalities. Your ultrasound technician can also see how long your cervix is and can tell you approximately how much your baby weighs at this time. Most expectant women also find out the sex of their baby during this time! If your sonographer does not offer pictures, ask them for a copy of the photos.

Brittany, my husband was born and raised in Europen and it's a lot less common to get circumsized over there. He himself is not circumsized and he very much wanted our first son circumsized. I was unsure how I felt about it at the time but leaning towards not getting it done. He brought of very good reasons why he thought we should get it done. He has a unique perspective bc he is a man and actually has a penis unlike me. Lol so I left the decision up to him. As a result, my son had it done and we never had any problems. I suggest getting it done before you even go home from the hospital if that is an option where you live and you decide you do want it done.

MHarter- That's GREAT! Hysterical!!!!

mharter04@yahoo.com - 15.9 hours ago
Dragon- I had a dream about you last night. You were having a garage sale and selling tons of baby boy things. I went and bought tons (even though I'm having a girl). Then we decided we wanted to grill out. I opened a fridge that you had in the garage and it was packed full of huge tubes of beef. We had tons of burgers lol.

mharter04@yahoo.com - 15.9 hours ago
I don't have a boy and I haven't done tons of research on circumcision but I think I would probably get it done mostly for social reasons. Although I know it's becoming less and less popular to circumcise now so maybe social views will change. None of my 3 brothers are circumcised because my mom felt that it was their decision but they are very self conscience about it. I think if I actually had a boy my opinion might change if I actually had to send him away to get snipped...id feel horrible!

2Tauruses - 17 hours ago
brittany- i had my son circumsized.. they're so little that they won't even remember it. the doctor told me that my son didn't even cry when he got it done 2 days after delivery! i must have a tough boy :) Anyways, I did it because it's just the norm in my family, and it's better for health reasons.. Also, most girls prefer for them to be circumsized so i didn't want him dealing with it years down the road. Then again everyone is different so good luck on whatever you decide!! :)

brittanynoelle - 18.8 hours ago
Thanks everyone for the comments on boy stuff. I'm always like 'ehh' I don't know if its too girly lol. I told my boyfriend if he doesn't go shopping with me this baby is going to be the girliest boy out there haha. This may seem controversal but what's everyone's take on circumcision? I'm def on the fence though my bf is 100% for it. Being in nursing school I saw 2 preformed and it was just Horriable! Some docs don't use any local anesthesia and I feel for the little guys:/

flybear - 19.5 hours ago
We closed on our house today! Yay

brittanynoelle - 20.2 hours ago
Jjmommy- my baby is also breech and I know he hasn't turned yet! I keep getting kicks right on my bladder and it makes me have to go soo bad lol! To add to it my placenta is posterior so i feel EVERYTHING this little guy is doing in there! The doc told me not to be worried and that they usually flip by the time of delivery:)!

BabyBumpPlusTwoGirls*Team Pink* - 20.2 hours ago
Anyone else get really nervous before their twenty week scan? I already know what I am having, but this one is huge to me. I feel like this is when they really confirm that all is okay with the little one growing inside of us. Maybe I am just crazy, but I really work myself up for this ultrasound.

BabyBumpPlusTwoGirls*Team Pink* - 20.3 hours ago
Finally got Chick-Fil-A last night and it wasn't as amazing as I had been thinking it would be. Also, tuna is kinda getting old. LOL. No foods sound good this week, but I am starvinggggggg! I must say I love how my bump looks with clothes on this week...love my basketball. Wish my bump would stay this size the rest of my pregnancy, being that I have been through this two times before I know it is all down hill from here:)

jjmommy2 - 20.9 hours ago
Thanks girls I keep tellin her she better turn her tush around lol. Told my fiancee he needs tell her sincw his voice has more authority haha. Now if she will just listen to me

sweettart3 - 21.7 hours ago
jj-I've had breech babies that turned at the last minute. Their heads are actually heavier than the rest of the body so it's more comfy for them to be head down. They'll usually get there on their own. lana-Yay for your girl! I'm happy for you. Dragons-I hope things turn around for you. I'm sure it will. Don't strangle them too hard, just give them a good whack upside the head. lol

Gift-from-God - 21.8 hours ago
jjmommy2-I'm presently at 31 weeks and still waiting for my little guy to get into position. Both my girls were head down quite early but this guy's being a pickle! He moves around from breech to transverse. I,too, have had two natural deliveries (at home) and DON'T want a c-section----but don't think I'm brave enough to try a natural breech delivery either! Pray he turns soon! I tend to go about two weeks early.

2Tauruses - 22.9 hours ago
And my boyfriend and I were cuddling on the couch this morning and he felt the baby kick! yay!

2Tauruses - 22.9 hours ago
jjmommy- my son was breech and flipped at around 28-32 weeks or so.. They have time, most babies aren't head down at this point! Lana-Congrats on the girl!! Yay!

jjmommy2 - 23.9 hours ago
Ultrasound was good have go back cause didn't get clear shots of her face belly and heart thry want her be lil bigger I guess. Besides that she measured right on track & wrighed 11ozs

treadonfoot - 23.9 hours ago
Well she still has plenty of time to still turn around. They technically don't do it until way towards the end. I wouldn't worry much.

jjmommy2 - 1 days ago
Ok anyone who has had lil ones baby been breech and turned on their own for u?? My boys were always head down but rhis one she is breech and has been I am hoping she turns on her own I reallywant natural deliveey again.

Lana29*teampurple* - 1 days ago
Its a.......girl!!!!!

Dragonsoccermom*teamblue* - 1 days ago
I swear to god if anyone else in my house starts complaining I'm going to strangle them! My husband keeps having to 'dip' into what cash I do have set aside. He needs a second job. He knows it but he's not being proactive!

threebagsfool - 1 days ago
jjmommy-how was your ultrasound? Dragon-no wonder you are feeling depressed. That is a lot to think about without the added stress of being pregnant. I think the name is really great, though. I haven't heard of it before.

flybear - 1 days ago
Congrats on your girl kords!

Dragonsoccermom*teamblue* - 1 days ago

2tauruses - 2 days ago
Lana- That's awesome!! You'll have to tell us!!! Dragon- sorry you're feeling like that. I get the money stresses! I have to come up with $270 by tomorrow (which I have but I'll have to push off some bills until my next paycheck to cover it..) so that will already put me behind with my next check.. on top of that in June if we get the place ill have to come up with another $300, and i am going to the beach for a week so i'll be out of work without pay, and still have bills due.. ahh vacation is nice but sure is stressful when you're not paid during it! && I knooww I'm dying to know too. Good thing is that I have some things to take my mind off of it so hopefully the week will fly by! Week from tomorrow:)

Dragonsoccermom*teamblue* - 2 days ago
Lana! How exciting! 2tauruses- I'm DYING TO KNOW what you're having! Anyone else clueless?

Dragonsoccermom*teamblue* - 2 days ago
Btw- we're reusing the name. Kiernan. :)

Lana29*teampurple* - 2 days ago
It's our 2yr wedding anniversary today so tonight's the night we cut open our gender reveal cake!!! So excited! I think it's a boy but hubby thinks girl- one of us will be right :)

Dragonsoccermom*teamblue* - 2 days ago
Kenzie has short strawberry blond hair, diamond earrings, nail polish & pink frills everywhere... People STILL think she's a boy! I have a follow up ultrasound on thursday. That's 2 in 1 week. (who's jealous?) They're going to check the kidneys again.

Lana29*teampurple* - 2 days ago
Dragon-sorry your having a rough time :/ hopefully you feel better tomorrow bring on the happy hormones!!! 3bagsfool- congrats on your girl!!! Sweettart3- I'm with you I've been feeling great last few days, my ultrasound was unreal so cool to see bub jumping around on the big screen I'm still on a high :)

Dragonsoccermom*teamblue* - 2 days ago
Mharter- basically. I'm tired of being home every day, I'm tired of just watching tv & changing diapers. We're so broke & my husband is terrible with money. (he set aside $400 for rent & has only $160 left) rent is already a month late, we have no food, no clean laundry, cody's school is bothering me for money for field trips, & my friend who is driving us to NH for cody's soccer team just bailed because her car needs $1000 worth of work. If cody doesn't go, his team won't have enough players. Plus I already paid for ferry, rooms, & meals. I'm dying to go back to work because I made more than him but it's so tough right now. Reaching out for babysitting gigs...

kords mommy - 2 days ago
Ultrasound today...so cool to see the little one and all the movements!

Penelopieme - 2 days ago
Scan tomorrow and should find out what flavour we're having!

threebagsfool - 2 days ago
Well, the ultrasound went well, and it's a girl! I am really happy because I kept all my daughter's clothes 'just in case' over the past year. My husband thought I was crazy (we weren't planning on having any more kids for a while) but I guess it worked out. Now down to the name choosing.

HappymomV*teampink* - 2 days ago
Hi girls! Wow it got busy in here! Will have to scroll through all the comments to catch up. Dragon - I'm sorry you are feeling blue. :( Could it be from being tired? Lack of sleep always makes me super depressed and it's so hard to pull yourself out of it. I hope you feel better soon! I feel crabby today bc I had a lousy night of sleep, daughter was up at 4 am crying. Sigh. And I dread getting dressed every morning. I am having the hardest time figuring out what to wear...it's hot but I don't want to flash everyone if I wear a short dress. I don't wear shorts and pants are too heavy. Not the worst problem to have, but a daily battle nonetheless. Oh, and I bought white maternity capris and my baby got strawberries on them within 5 minutes. What was I thinking anyways?!

sweettart3 - 2 days ago
Half way there! Feeling the flutters more and more. Dragons why so depressed? Hate to rub it in but I'm on top of the world (today). Who knows how tomorrow will be lol.

Gift-from-God - 2 days ago
threebagsfool and flybear-I always dressed my baby girls in frills and pink and ALWAYS with a hairbow---but because of the lack of hair, everyone always asked how old HE was. UGH!!

2Tauruses - 2 days ago
my only issue at the moment other than the constant struggle of money is that i have to move in june and still haven't found a place. EEKK. talk about stress. Been on craigslist every day and can't find anything we're looking for!

2Tauruses - 2 days ago
threebags- i feel like girl names are harder than boys, i dont know why though! Dragon- why? what's up?? hormones or something in particular?

mharter04@yahoo.com - 2 days ago
Dragon what's wrong?? I'm feeling the same lately. Just feeling like shit about life. It's not what I expected for myself.

Girls, I am so depressed & in such a funk.

threebagsfool - 2 days ago
I've been through so many names that I thought were perfect. I have a boy name picked out, Chase Tucker, but for girls I've been through Sarah, Josephine, Eliana, Scarlet, Rose, Violet, Serephina, and Sophia. I had a dream name for a girl, and when my daughter was born, she got it. Now every other name feels like second place.

2Tauruses - 2 days ago
Mharter-Yeah when you said Maize I thought of the old TV show, too. I like Maci, Kendall, and Kira. Those are all really pretty!! I will find out next week what I'm having as long as baby cooperates so I will start thinking of names then! Picking names for one gender is MUCH better than for two! haha

mharter04@yahoo.com - 2 days ago
2Tauruses- I think maybe Teen Mom iswhere I came up with that name. I was deciding between Maci and Maise (Maize?) but I keep thinking of Maize the mouse from the old tv show lol. The other names on my list are Brynlie, Kendall, Claire, Lily, Kinley, and Kira. Actually I haven't looked at that list for a while and I don't think I like Claire and Lily so much anymore. This is such a hard part! Good thing we still have a long time to think about it!

2Tauruses - 2 days ago
sarebear- can you add me to the FB group please? my FB email is on a post from yesterday

2Tauruses - 2 days ago
mharter- I'm the same way.. I don't like names that are too popular. I like that name! Don't personally know anyone named Maci, but the girl on Teen Mom is named that..She's a good mom though, not crazy. Lol
