Congratulations! This week marks the half way point of your pregnancy. It has been 18 weeks since the date of conception and your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5.6 to 6.4 inches. The fetus weighs about 9 ounces and your belly definitely has an obvious bulge. Your waistline has expanded and is no longer visible. Your uterus has now moved up enough that it is pushing your abdomen outwards. The top of your uterus is even with or just below your navel.
Sex organs are showing clearly on this girl
For the remainder of your pregnancy, the growing uterus puts pressure on your lungs, stomach and kidneys. This will make you feel short of breath, the need to urinate more frequently and can cause indigestion. The added pressure on your abdomen can also cause your bellybutton to protrude and cause an `outy` instead of an `inny`. Many pregnant women begin to notice stretch marks around this time as well. Your abdominal muscles are being stretched and pushed apart as your baby grows inside of you.
Your baby's skin begins to thicken this week and will develop four layers. Your baby's sebaceous glands secrete a waxy substance called vernix caseosa. Your baby will be born with this wax and it will look like paste. The vernix caseosa is crucial because it protects the fetus' fragile skin from the continuous immersion in amniotic fluid. Lanugo hairs secure the vernix caseosa in place and it is thick around the eyebrows. Scalp hair and toenails are beginning to form at this point. Hair can also be seen on the upper lip and eyebrows.
Around twenty weeks, most doctors will order a routine ultrasound to check the baby's development. Measurements will be taken and the sonogram technician will check to make sure there are no defects or abnormalities. Your ultrasound technician can also see how long your cervix is and can tell you approximately how much your baby weighs at this time. Most expectant women also find out the sex of their baby during this time! If your sonographer does not offer pictures, ask them for a copy of the photos.

Hey lovelies! Well it's after midnight here so it's official Wednesday, the 10th. I go for a transvaginal scan and another progesterone injection this afternoon. My high-risk dr (whom I'm going to see) has had me on the shots since 15 weeks due to my history of preterm labor/premature delivery; they make me itch like crazy! Anyway please keep me in you guys' prayers as I've been having some pressure and lots and lots of Braxton Hicks lately. I don't want my LO to come early, and I'm scared of the possibility of a cerclage. :( I hope everything goes well today - have a good one, everybody! <3

We have decided that we aren't going to bank our cord blood based on the cost of it but we are donating it. Where I live all I had to do was register online then they sent me a bunch of paper work I filled out and in a couple months they will send me a kit to bring to My Doctor and they will do the rest. You can probably find out of your hospital does this and if it does then it's really easy, kind of like donating blood.

PLACENTA PREVIA- I had placenta previa at my last U/S, but when I went yesterday they told me it had moved up 1.5 centimeters so now it is considered 'low laying previa', still on pelvic restriction, but at least it is moving in the right direction and hopefully will continue to correct itself with time!

the only thing ill warn u ladies about when choosing a stroller is that i was worried a front to back one was going to be to tipy and bulky so i found a small comact side by side and ended up going back to my front to back because most of my children are between 18-24 months apart. try explaining to a toddle that they have to keep thier hands off a new baby. neew baby is trying to sleep toddler feels they need a suther in thier mouth! lol. they seem to always want to play with the new little one. at least they can only turn and look and not touch in a front to back :)

havinghisbaby4422-Take it very easy. I had a shortened cervix with my son, but ended up going two days overdue. They checked me this time because they thought I might have an insufficient cervix. So far so good, but I will continue to be monitored. With my son, I was dialated to 3.5 for six weeks before he was born. The best thing is to keep it mellow, eliminate heavy lifting, and stay off your feet as much as possible. If it is bad enough, your doc may want to add a stitch, which they will then remove around 36-38 weeks. I will keep you in my prayers as I know how scary this can be.

Well 21 weeks tomorrow and i had my fetal u/s yesterday and it's a girl, well the dr who look over my u/s said that the blood work that i had done at 16 weeks shows the level was a little high for Spinal Bifida although he said the u/s look great i need to have another u/s april 5th because he said the pic was a little blurry and the baby was to young he also suggested a amniocentesis which hubby and i are against doing,so please keep us in your prayers and congrats to all the 20 weeks mommies.

Morning Ladies, I am now finally in 20 weeks, I just found out what I am having yesterday, It's a Boy!! I'm so excited I now have 2 boys and a girl. My daughter who is the youngest wasn't too happy it was a boy, she wanted a sister, but she is now ok with the fact that she can be my big helper. :)

ive a shortened cervix and at hihg risk for preterm labor...has anyone expierenced this also?
sweetbaby12 - 1 days ago
wlkirk I had that when I was pregnant with my son and it did correct itself within 8 weeks. A good reason to have another ultra sound as well. Don't stress i'm sure it'll move in no time.
1stBabyMomCA - 1 days ago
Wlkirk--I was just told I have partial previa last week. This is my first and I also cant help but worry. However the statictics say that 95% of the time in partial previa cases the placentia moves out of the way. 90% chance of it moving if you have complete previa. All we can do at this point is pray and wait.
UGG...Sucks because I am not patient but we have to hope for the best.
wlkirk - 1 days ago
Anyone have placenta previa? I didn't have it w/ my first, but I went for an u/s today & was told I had partial. Dr. told my that 20% of pregnant moms had it & 99% of their placentas moved back to the correct position. I'm still a little worried & stressed thouh!

lynsa-Oops meant $125 a year! LOL
lexi101 - 1 days ago
lynsa-I looked into it and we are doing it. I just haven't signed up yet. We are going with Via cord. It's kind of pricey but they are doing a special this month for $300 off the set up cost so it brings it to around $1700 to set up and $125 a month.
wlkirk - 1 days ago
Sweetbaby12 - I bought a Joovy Tandem Stroller where my daughter (who will be almost 3 when the baby is born) can stand or sit behind the baby. It's great b/c if she is not w/ me, I can still use it w/ just the baby & it doesn't look silly. They're pricey, but I bought mine off of a friend for about 1/2 price!!
lynsa - 1 days ago
Is anyone considering doing cord blood banking? We're still deciding if we should. Have any of you gone through it and which one did you use?
sweetbaby12 - 2 days ago
To any of the ladies that are having their 2nd baby are you getting double strollers and what brands? I registered for a travel system and my son already has a stroller but i'm thinking about the times when I only have one of them and then the times when I do have both.

I am not going to speak in any direction about circumcision except to advise that you and your dh talk to your doctor about the pros and cons. (hygienically, sensationally, and aesthetically)
Also, when your baby boy is born, make sure, no matter what you do decide for your circumcision option, that you have them evaluate your son's pp. My son was born with a condition called glandular hypospadia. Hypospadia is kind of like a bent urethra. After researching, I have found that 1/4 of all baby boys in the US are born with it. This is often the actual cause of UTIs and the like in childhood/adulthood. For my son, circumcision was medically necessary. Just a thought.

We ordered our twin bassinet a couple of days ago! I know it's a bit early, but it was a good deal...couldn't pass it up!

AZ girl, we don't circumcise for aesthetics; we circumcise because it reduces risk of disease.
http://www.who.int/hiv/mediacentre/news68/en/index.html
It is worldwide recommendation to reduce heterosexual and homosexual disease risks.

Biffabouf---- I am the same way. With my son all I wanted was fast food. This one is soo different I was sure I was havin a girl but its a boy. Anyways all I crave is sweets! I love my sherbert ice cream. And all of that good stuff. When I was pregnant with my son I thought those women who crave sweets are just crazy cuz I have never been a sweet eater. Lol but this one I can eat sweets all day and not even get an upset tummy. Its soo funny how much your body changes when your pregnant lol
porkypiee - 2 days ago
azgrl I'd have to agree with you. *I* don't want to get my LO circumsized but my Df won't hear of it *not* being done. Sigh.
azgrl - 2 days ago
Not to beat a dead horse but I had to get my two cents in. In my opinion the only reason we in the US circumcise our sons is for asthetic reasons. Sweetbaby12 said it looks 'grose' to her. Well, that is what a penis looks like...a circumcised penis is an altered one. I was raised Jewish and we traditionally always circumcise our boys. I did not circumcise my first son nor will I my second. I believe it is for looks just like a boob job. But I watched both my brothers get circumcised in the temple and they are aparently fine as adults.

Yay I am so excited to be going to week 21 tomorrow! I hope this pregnancy keeps moving pretty fast. I am so ready to hold my little girl! I go for my last 4d u/s march 12th I cannot wait to see her chubby little face! Love to all, have a great day!

Hi Lindie - I'm going through the same thing right now. They found cysts on the right side of my baby's brain and I'm going for another scan tomorrow. Apparently, what my baby has is one indicator for trisomy 18 (extra 18th chromosome like an extra 21st is Down's). Apparently if there are no other indicators, though, then the chances are very low, but it's hard not to worry. I am going insane thinking about it as I've been waiting a week now for another u/s. I hope all goes well with you and let me know if you want to chat more about it. Hugs

20 Weeks today!! WOOHOO!! Hope all of you ladies had a great weekend! Hope your all feeling well this morning, too! Starting to feel little Anderson moving around some.. He's definitely letting me know he needs as much attention as my 10 1/2 month old. : ) HAHAHA!! Love it!! Okay.. Hope you have a great week. Write me if you feel up to it! : )

I hear ya ladies on the junk food...and sweets...Seems to be all I can eat!! At least, that's all I WANT to eat :) I am going to the perinatal specialist today to have a detailed ultrasound done on our little girl. During our routine 20 week scan, they found a cyst in her brain. I am so nervous. Part of me wants to go and just get the reassurance that everything is ok and it will self-resolve by the time she is born, but the other part of me just doesn't want to know anything else!! I'm positive it will all be fine, but it is still incredibly stressful...Wish me luck ladies!

biffabouf, I feel the same way. It's like when you are pregnant you are supposed to act exactly like you do when not pregnant. I feel guilty for being tired, hungry, and unmotivated. oh well, once I hit 3rd trimester I'll be too tired to feel guilty about not being perfect and pregnant. ha ha
biffabouf - 2 days ago
hhhhhhmmmmmmmmm junk food! In fact, I am having a very hard time right now with everything. It feels like everywhere I go, people expect me to be perfect because I'm pregnant. It's really a lot of pressure and sometimes I feel I can't take it. Yes, I still stuggle with quitting smoking, yes I enjoy my two cans of soda a day, yes I like to go bowling with the kids, and darn it, some days my only source of fruits and vegetables is french fries and ketchup! Sorry... was going to blow...
sweetbaby12 - 2 days ago
Is anyone else only craving junk? All I want is take out, fast food, or frozen crap that I do not need. I put on a pair of jammie shorts last night and my butt cheeks fell out of the bottom I said what the hell these fit a month ago.

If what I choose ends up being so clld common or normal, whatever, it was still a decision I make. ANYWAY- watched terms of endearment, again, what a tear jerker especially with all these hormones!!! :) making a yummy pot roast with lots of veggies, hubby will be home in 2 hours, woo hoo!!
kaleyjay - 3 days ago
Yes many things we do here in the US that are 'normal' they don't do anywhere else. I like to refer to us American as 'Sheeple' because we just follow what everyone else does and what everyone else thinks and we can't think for ourselves or make our own informed decision when it comes to important issues. Most just believe everything we read, hear, and watch. Gotta be proud of that right?... Question and research everything and don't just do it to be 'normal' .. There is a difference between COMMON and NORMAL. I don't know about you but I dont wanna be common, and who's to say what normal is. My normal isnt your normal. Do what you believe and have found to be the best option for you. But do it in a self educated well informed manner and listen to your own heart.

mrsgaylonj - 3 days ago
Clairmum-after reading these posts I wondered if it was more common in the US, too..- looked it up, and yes, infact it is the most common surgery in the US according to thefreedictionary.com,I just put in circumcision. Its weird, my husband is circumcised, but his brother isn't...no sure why, I'm in the US and as stated before there is no way I wouldn't get it done once this baby boy is born! If I didn't and he decided once he was an adult that he wanted it done it would be so much more painful, like an adult having tonsills out vs. a small child. Anyway, I agree with sweetbaby 100%.
lexi101 - 3 days ago
hey ladies I have a quick question. Has anyone taking amocillin while preggo???? Do you think it's safe??
clairemumof1 - 3 days ago
Is it just a US thing where they circumsize the babys after their born? cos I have a 19 month old and getting him done was never once mentioned my entire pregnancy or since he's been born! I am having a boy again this time and again its not been mentioned to me at all by anyone including a doctor or family member etc. I've also not heard of any person who's had a boy and made them have the procedure?? So for that reason I wont be doing this I think its up to them to decide when they're old enough what they wanna do with their bodies- unless they would have to have one for medical reasons of course. I live in the UK xx
