Congratulations! This week marks the half way point of your pregnancy. It has been 18 weeks since the date of conception and your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5.6 to 6.4 inches. The fetus weighs about 9 ounces and your belly definitely has an obvious bulge. Your waistline has expanded and is no longer visible. Your uterus has now moved up enough that it is pushing your abdomen outwards. The top of your uterus is even with or just below your navel.
Sex organs are showing clearly on this girl
For the remainder of your pregnancy, the growing uterus puts pressure on your lungs, stomach and kidneys. This will make you feel short of breath, the need to urinate more frequently and can cause indigestion. The added pressure on your abdomen can also cause your bellybutton to protrude and cause an `outy` instead of an `inny`. Many pregnant women begin to notice stretch marks around this time as well. Your abdominal muscles are being stretched and pushed apart as your baby grows inside of you.
Your baby's skin begins to thicken this week and will develop four layers. Your baby's sebaceous glands secrete a waxy substance called vernix caseosa. Your baby will be born with this wax and it will look like paste. The vernix caseosa is crucial because it protects the fetus' fragile skin from the continuous immersion in amniotic fluid. Lanugo hairs secure the vernix caseosa in place and it is thick around the eyebrows. Scalp hair and toenails are beginning to form at this point. Hair can also be seen on the upper lip and eyebrows.
Around twenty weeks, most doctors will order a routine ultrasound to check the baby's development. Measurements will be taken and the sonogram technician will check to make sure there are no defects or abnormalities. Your ultrasound technician can also see how long your cervix is and can tell you approximately how much your baby weighs at this time. Most expectant women also find out the sex of their baby during this time! If your sonographer does not offer pictures, ask them for a copy of the photos.

Does anyone have any cravings?? All I want at the moment is pineapple juice and ice, lot and lots of ice. And i find myself being very fussy about the size of my ice cubes too, they can't be too big!!! How bizarre.

almost done with 20 wks...been feeling baby move some, but today he is kicking harder & stronger than ever! soo happy, these are the little things that make pregnancy soo memorable. it makes me sad to think this will be the last time i get to feel these precious bumps...just makes me cherish this pregnancy all the more!!! :) & congrats to everyone finding out what their babies are, but to those bummed by the sex; dont be...just be happy to have this experience & blessing of a healthy baby. i dont think you should go into the preg with hopes of what it will be, cause there is a 50% chance that you will be let down. just saying... :) happy kicks to all!

I had my 20 week u/s yesterday and found out I am having another boy. I was hoping for a girl this time around sense I already have a boy. But now my 3 year old will have a brother to play with! And at least I won't have to worry about clothing for the new baby because I kept all of my firstborn's baby clothes.

Glad all is well Luv2b! you should have took the doc up on that no vacuuming note for hubby :)
luv2bamama - 6 days ago
I did get called into the dr. yesterday afternoon and they gave me an early RhoGAM shot just to be on the extra cautious side. She also did a pelvic exam and confirmed there was no current bleeding and the cervix was closed, all good signs. It took her a few tries to find the heartbeat, but then little one kicked a few times which you could hear (I still can’t feel him/her), so that put me at ease. She clarified the do’s and don’ts of “pelvic rest” She said simply no intercourse and no orgasm for me, an no heavy lifting (my two year old is less than thrilled) until my next u/s on March 29th. It’s only 8 weeks from now, so I think we will survive. She said vacuuming was fine, unless I wanted her to say “no” and then she would give my husband a Dr. note (ha, ha). She didn’t know what caused it, but I had been moving furniture, and I jogged a few blocks with the dogs that day, so it could have been any combination of that. I guess I actually need to take my placenta issue seriously and take it easy and not try to be wonder woman.

Luv2beamama- dropping in from week 36, I had some bleedingin week 22 and I got got checked lesd than an hour later and all they said was that it wasnt pooling so thats a good thing but if I saw more blood to come in straight away. But, I am still here obviously lol. Hope everything stays ok and I wish you the best of luck! = ) . NinaWOOD- my doc asked me about bc and I said pills because I got too many infections with the iud, and she didnt say anything about the boy versus girl thing. Im sooo glad I read your post lol I will have to rethink the bc situation. Thank you! = ) . Hope eveyone has a fantastic day!
taniamommyx3 - 6 days ago
luv2bamama - I was reading you post about 'pelive rest' and I was like...'no vacuuming' COOL! 'no heavy lifting' COOL!'no intercourse' OK! 'No orgasm' WHAT????!!!!! That sucks! Sorry to hear it and hope all turns out well!
babycorrea12(team blue) - 6 days ago
Hey girls! Nina great info i had no clue getting on birth control pills at 6wks would be different for if you had a boy or girl! Dang it i'm having a boy this time around and will need a new plan. Praying that all goes well for you and your little one. Luv2 i was going to suggest maybe it was a little bit of the mucus plug but since you talked with the doc,...Nevermind.
luv2bamama - 6 days ago
So I called the Dr. office about the tinge of blood this weekend, and I am being put on “pelvic rest” until my next u/s on the 29th of next month due to my low lying placenta—no vacuuming (darn), no heavy lifting, no intercourse, or orgasm. I may also be going in this afternoon for an early Rhogam shot because I’m RH negative.

Has anyone ever experienced light spotting this late in the pregnancy? On Sat night, I went to the restroom and there was a small blood stain in my underware. I could tell I wasn’t actively bleeding and it looked more like the blood was mixed in with discharge. I haven’t seen anything else since then and plan on talking to my Dr. on Thursday when I see her. This is the first time I’ve ever had this.

I was also able to get on the pills as soon as 6wks afer i gave birth to my daughter and breastfeed her. But not with my son. After him I had to use the Cooper IUD. Which I had to removed 8 months later. My body didnt get use to it. I was having heavy, heavy and i mean heavy bleeding and pains prior and during my periods. My regular periods never last more than 3 days since the day i got it at 10 years old. With the IUD i was menstruating for over a week. So I stopped breastfeeding when my son was 9 months to get back on the pills. The doctor explained to me that the reason why i was able to get on the pills sooo soon with my daughter and not with my son was because of the gender. Since he was a boy it is not save to take female hormones if you are breastfeeding a boy. I hope you girls find this piece of information useful. I will be having another SONO on Wednesday. I will let you all know how it went. Hopefully, God willing the the down syndrome test and all that will only be a false alarm. Please all pray for us. Have a pleasant day your girls!!!!

Hey ladies i had my 20wk (even though i'm 21wks) appt on Friday and the baby's heart beat was 150 and i've gained a total of 5lbs this pregnancy! I also got my prescription for an inhaler too for my sometime wheezing issues. Melissa-sorry to scare you but it's worth it and i got my body back but it took 18months and i gained 73lbs! I was lazy and a Nympho with my daughter and this time around with our boy i'm cleaning all the time and could care less about sex! Last time after i had my daughter i was able to get on a birth control pill (after my 6wks check up) and it allowed me to still breastfeed (i can't remember the name of it but i'll find out and let you gals know). Also my blood sugar numbers are starting to creep up which can mean i'll be going on insulin soon which is my downfall with pregnancy :( but i'm still about to fight it and eat even healthier whatever needs to be done to keep me away from insulin. Have a happy Super bowl Sunday!

Kano, agreed! Every Doctor is different in their opinions. AZO is basically just cranberry in pill form. You can get it at Walmart or Target. OTC. Macrobid is the only approved antibiotic during pregnancy according to my OB.
kanojoca - 9 days ago
no no it's ok raven. I'm just curious what AZO is? and what the difference it is compared to a natural cranberry probiotic pill. I asked 3 dr's and they said that it is natural and you get probiotics in food anyways, so it is like taking a multivitamin. It's so infuriating sometimes isn't it, you get told so many different things. I was told that the antibiotics can cause birth defects, and that they can't give it to you more than twice cause then you get immune, but on the other hand leaving the infection causees pre term labour, so i just figured probiotics was the way to go!
ravenmoon - 9 days ago
@ Kano I'm so sorry. Didn't mean to worry you. I was just putting out there that I was prone to UTIs. An the OB gave me an antibiotic every single time. Once it was so bad I was given a super strong dose of something I can't remember, had to take for 2 weeks. I was told to drink plenty of Lime Cranberry juice because my AZO wasn't good for me.
kanojoca - 9 days ago
@Raven - i wasn't taking AZO, they are just probiotics, which is what you get from yogurt etc. They are completely fine to take when pregnant, the only thing I have to do afterwards, is use probiotic powder on my nipples when feeding for the first couple of weeks cause the baby would of been used to it. Other than that I Was told it was ok. But now your worrying me.....
