This week your baby's crown-to-rump length is around 8.4 inches and your baby will weigh approximately 1.2 pounds. Although it weighs a little over a pound at this point, your growing baby is still tiny. Your uterus can easily be felt 1.5 to 2 inches above your bellybutton. The fetus does not appear to have much room in the uterus anymore, but as your pregnancy progresses, space gets much tighter!
Because your uterus is expanding and putting a great amount of pressure on your abdomen, you might get stretch marks. Your weight gain may also be taking a toll on your body at this point. Many pregnant women experience backaches, bladder problems, sore feet and fatigue that affect their daily routines. You might also have some nasal stuffiness or nosebleeds.
Your baby's face is basically complete now. The fetus's eyes are close together on the front of his face and they are still shut. Your baby's ears have moved into their final position on the sides of his head. Where they are now is where they will be when your baby is born! Hair will continue to grow on his scalp and his eyelashes are well developed. Most of your baby's features look the same as they will at birth. Because your growing baby is getting plumper, he no longer has room in your tummy to do cartwheels and somersaults.
Now is a good time to ask about prenatal classes being offered in your area. Many local hospitals offer classes for expectant women and their families. You should aim to complete the classes approximately one month before your due date.
You may sometimes get a stitch-like pain in your side from time to time. It's simply the muscles of the uterus stretching.
the unborn child is covered with a fine, downy hair called lanugo. Its tender skin is protected by a waxy substance called vernix. Some of this substance may still be on the child's skin at birth at which time it will be quickly absorbed.
The child practices breathing by inhaling (up to a liter/day) amniotic fluid into developing lungs.

october20mami- yes, I had bh contractions for about a week every eve w cramping in my back. The doc checked my cervix and everything was fine! Now I only get one every once in a while.
october20mami - 2.3 hours ago
guys, is it possible to feel braxton hicks contractions one day and then not feel them again? Because last week I felt really wierd cramping. I mean like in my back and everything. It lasted for like an hour and then I was completely fine like it never even happened. And it hasn't happened since. Is that what it's like? Or was that something else?
october20mami - 2.9 hours ago
Crookedmule: Oh hell no!!! I would not accept that crap! You should in NO WAY have to pay for another one! If I were you I would find out her name, and call up and complain and demand that they give you another ultrasound immediately. And demand that they have someone other than that idiot lady do it! You are supposed to be able to put your trust into your medical providers and you should also have some peace of mind in knowing that they are giving you information that is accurate and to the best of their knowledge. Whether you are paying out of pocket or not! And you are! So I definitely think that you should call and complain about this. I don't know anything about UK but here in the US I scream on people all the time. It's very effective.

Destin-don't feel bad! I am having a love affair with green tea and I crave coffee. Green tea has less caffeine, so I drink one cup a day.

Mini, I'm not knocking working moms! I work too. I am just saying that people send their kids to daycare for the wrong reasons sometimes. I know none of you ladies are like this, but I have some trifling friends and in-laws, lol. It's not fair to the kids to always get sent to someone else's house.
twinsandmore77 - 8.1 hours ago
uhoh-impreggo, I'm a mother of 4 and have worked and stayed home. I tell all moms they should do what feels right for them. I always wanted to stay home with my kids, but it's not easy. You are with little babies and kids all day with very little breaks. You usually feel like you need to keep the house clean (which feels impossible somedays) and cook dinner, etc. Still there are amazing benefits as well. You get to see all your kids firsts. You really get to have a great, close relationship with your kids, and countless moments you can't replace.
When i worked I wanted to be home, but I was a great mommy then, because I always wanted to spend my free time with my child. We also had a little extra money to go out and do fun things. Anyways, the point is you can be a good parent whether you work or stay home, you just have to figure out which is best for you and go with it.

I had a friend who was told she would be having a boy...when 'he' was born turned out to be a girl! If you want to know for sure what your having I would pay for another u/s somewhere where they will do a much better job and take their time with you! Good luck.

Crookedmule that sucks about your u/s i would go and pay for another one that lady just sucked. I get 2 more u/s one on july 23rd for my 28 weeks scan and another one aug 3 i'll be 30 weeks and my last one a couple days before my c-section like Sept 30 9since i'm having my c section like oct 2 or 3rd.)to make sure she looks ready to come out.

hi, im a little bummed out about my ultrasound, i was rushed, it only lasted about 15 minutes. she asked if we wanted to know the gender, we obviously said yes. she quicky showed us the heart, flicked over the spine for a split second, baby was face down so didnt get a look at the face or nothing. she tried to see the 'goods' there was 1 thick white line, not the 3 i saw with my daughter and no obvious scrotum. she kept saying baby is in an awkward position but said she would say 75% girl. is she saying this because the boy part appeared missing or she saw girl parts? im sooo frustrated. my u/s pics were awful. we paid £12 for 4 pics and theyre all the same and show hardly anything. in uk i get no more u/s. thats why im thinkin of a private scan. im confused about the 1 white line. she didnt try and see anymore times in the scan and didnt try anymore angles. she seemed very unsure. ahhhhhhh this is so bad, least i know baby is healthy or should i believe her on that either coz she seemed rubbish! anyone know of babys gender changing at birth? im so gutted, i like to plan ahead and now i cant, i was so looking forward to the 20 week scan and now im no further forward. sorry for venting ladies, but any advice would be appreciated

ok Ladies ...I had the worst dream. In my dream I was at my baby shower and my water broke. It was so scary cause I was only 24 weeks. I kept telling the nurse I dont want to have the baby now but they pushed me to the bed and started doing a c section. When the baby was born my hubby didnt want me to look at him cause he was so sad looking. I was crying in my sleep.Dont mean to freak anyone out but my hubby already went to work and I just have to tell someone. How scary!!I think its from that one lady putting up the fake post about hers being so early. Now its in my mind.

Just got back from my bloods and glucose test -yuckkkk!. Here in France they do far more than I ever had in the uk!. every month they test for toxoplasmosis I never had one during 3 pregnancies in the uk!. Today they are doing all the usual but plus Diabetes and thyroid . They took 12 phials off me!still at least if there's something wrong I would know quicker!. Hope you are all good x

Ladies...Speaking of working long shifts...I work 12 hour shifts three times a week but by the time I get out of here its more like a 13 hour day. Im a nurse so its all on my feet! Im going to be part time once the baby comes and thats two days a week. We wont need a babysitter or daycare even if I worked the three days a week. But it does come with perks working in the hospital! I just had an ultrasound because I felt like it! People always want to practice!

Childcare is an idea but it would have to start with my sweetie's other two boys first. Since I currently work they have daycare from about 9-3. I can't handle them, thoug, and I did childcare for 10 years :( I'm just so worn when it comes to my nerves and children!! Not entirely sure how I'll handle one of my own.
I may go back into web dev, though. You can make really good money in it and stay at home. Have to take a few classes first- it's been years since I've so much as looked at a SQL database! :x
herecomesbaby2 - 21.6 hours ago
uhoh-impreggo: Have you considered taking in other kids to watch? I do that and always have my own money. It isn't my first choice of things to be doing, but it does allow me to be home with my child (soon to be children). I don't have full time kids though so I still get one or two days off a week. It would depend on your area as to how much you could make but for me I make anywhere from $150 to $200 per week. That's not bad at all for this area! Let me tell you though, not having the adult interaction throughout the day SUCKS!
MiniOface - 21.9 hours ago
Sometimes parents don't have the luxury of a choice. I spent a lot of time with my babysitters and turned out fine. So please don't knock parents who work to provide the best life for their children!
camsmami - 23.7 hours ago
Since I'm a teacher, I can teach them colors, numbers, alphabets, etc in the privacy of my own home. I know some people don't have any other choice, but as for me and my family, this is the best thing. My son has so many cousins and little playmates so he already has some social skills. He knows how to share, he's not a bully, he doesn't get sick, I love it! I have a cousin who sends her 2 children to daycare just because. She works, but her fiance stays home all day, so in their case daycare is not necessary. Some people just have kids without having a plan and they end up pushing them off on other people: daycares, grandparents, godparents, etc. If your child spends more time with other people than with you, there is a problem.
uhoh-impreggo - 1 days ago
Since we're talking about daycare and homecare etc- are there any other ladies who intend to stop working and be stay-at-homes, at least for a while but ARE NOT super-excited about it?
That is what I'm expecting to do, but I am not looking forward to it :( I don't have family here to give me breaks, and I LIKE working. I love having my own money, even if I now make half of what I did last year. I'm going to loathe asking for things like shampoo :( and razors, forget about going shopping for clothes or bags or shoes!!! *sigh* I won't be able to ask for things like that.

I've been so wanting to 'show' and not just look 'thick' but have found there is a LOT of fun to be had in telling people you're almost 6 months pregnant when you don't look it!!!
liz- meeee too. I work 18ish hours a week and as many as I can get, but I'm in retail and it is painful. Today my feet were shiny from swelling the last couple of days :( my shift was cut today and while I miss the money, it's nice to give them an unexpected day to relax.

Oh i hear you ladies when werew talking about stubborn babies. My littlw one was being soooooooo stubborn yesterday at the doctors when doing my U/S that she couldnt even get a good look at her face. We were trying to get a good picture because my Friend wants to make a cake for my babyshower with the pic on the cake in a candy sheet. Stubborn! We did get to see her heart and her femur bone. She wouldn't show us the goods either to ENSURE that she was really a girl. And last month my doctor said 'I'm pretty sure its a girl' because she definately couldn't see a boy tool between his legs and she said she would have been able to tell if it were a boy at that angle. I guess we aren't painting 'her' room quite yet. I will get another U/S in 6 weeks, I can't believe after my next month appointment it's already time for those every 2 week appointments. I am just soo o o o o o tired when I get home from working these 11 hour days I can't wait til October. Okay, I'm just going on and on and on about different subjects now. I had alot on my mind about stubborn babies.

Just weighing in here -- I agree on the daycare issue that it is good for kids if you get them in a good one. It's so good for them to socialize with other little ones and it really gets them ready for school later (I'm a kindergarten teacher). I do have to say that although I DON'T agree with the statement that if you can't stay home, don't have them, but I DO think that if you can't afford them, don't get pregnant. Or think about adoption or get another job. Whatever you have to do, but don't make me pay for it! Now, I know that some people fall into extinuating circumstances, but I believe that you are NOT doing the best for you or your kids if you purposely get pregnant knowing full well you can't afford it.

ivan: I had to reschedule a 2nd ultrasound because they couldn't get a good look at the spine. She said from what she could see it looked fine but they have to be able to get a good picture of it as 'proof'. I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure your baby was just being a little stinker and made it hard for them to see.

got my u/s results today. the cysts on her brain are gone, but there is still a cyst on her kidney, which the dr said they may be mistaking her gall bladder for the cyst and it could be nothing at all. i am feeling very confident that she is going to be a perfect healthy little girl.... but the dr just laughed when i told her how bad my back, hips, head, boobs, and vajayjay are hurting. i guess she must hear that ALOT! i know it is all normal pregnancy pains but i needed to complain a little bit to someone that understands cause the b/f thinks i am just being dramatic when i tell him i cant walk cause i am in to much pain!! i just cant wait til october gets here and baby comes out!!

my 2 cents on the daycare situation. My daughter has been in a full time 9-5 daycare since she was 2 and I don't know what I would do with out those heaven sent women. I have to work full time and my hubby travels for his work. Haylee became much more articulate when she started and learned to share, practice patience, and co-exist with other 'little people'. Now with that being said baby on the way will be staying with a family friend for the first year or so just to get a little more one on one attention but if that wasn't an option I would not hesitate to put him in the same program. I would give the world to stay with my kids all day but I can't for financial reasons, I also think I am able to not take for granted the time we do have together in the evenings and weekends because I am not burnt out from never having a break.

I think it depends on the daycare too. Because I've dropped in on my son at his daycare as well as my olders son's and never had any problems. Both of my children started daycare at 8 weeks since I HAVE to work and they are both healthy and happy with no problems. Like I said, bad stuff goes on in schools too, and we certainly won't stop our kids from going to schools...bad stuff even happens in churches!! We have to teach our children at an early age what to look out for and go from there...I can't speak for other people, but I do absolutely LOVE my son's preschool and what he is learning. Like I said, his preschool has cameras, and each class has a huge glass window, so if a parent doesn't want to be seen by going up to the window, they can look at their kid on the monitor. Which may be a reason this school is so great...but you can't beat that! I'm not saying they are perfect, no one is perfect, but for a parent that has to work, it's a wonderful place to keep your child.
herecomesbaby2 - 1 days ago
I worked at an accredited, state licensed daycare for 4 years before having my son. It was actually one of the best in the area and was mostly filled with doctors and nurses kids. After working there, I saw first hand what daycare was really like and decided right than that when I had a child I would NOT put them in daycare. The parents LOVED the daycare and the teachers but if they had any idea what it was really like it would be a completely different story. Many of the teachers and directors are great at putting on a 'show' for the parents. I do agree that it is beneficial for older kids though for the socialization and structure. I personally wouldn't put my child in daycare until they were at LEAST 3 years old. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this, that's definitely not my intention. I also agree that many children are better off in daycare than at home.
danie2020 - 1 days ago
I agree 100% with Peachy. I think a stable home enviornment matters the most!! I personally love my 4 year old son's daycare, my 13 year old went there too and they still have most of the same teachers! They teach him computers, spanish, math, science, social studies, and of course as an infant and toddler - shapes, numbers, colors, etc...I like his preschool so much that even if I was a stay at home mom, I would send him there because it teaches them social skills and prepares them for regular school. They will have to go to school one day and all kinds of bad things happen in schools as well...molestation, bullying, teasing, etc. We can't watch our kids 24 hours a day 7 days a week so I personally feel that it's good preparation for them if they can attend a preschool, even if it's a few days a week. Right now his school is on a summer program, but during the fall they switch back to school and he gets homework and everything. And he enjoys doing homework. So when he goes to regular school he will already be used to the fact that he has to do homework. It's obviously well balanced with playful activities suitable for his age. I don't knock any parent who stays at home, but you can't knock a parent who has to work either!! It can work both ways!
Peachy09 - 1 days ago
No BH with #1 or yet this time either! Either that or I had no idea what they felt like LoL. And wow on the daycare thing! That topic is SO controversial. It's great if you can stay home, but it really depends on so many factors! Some parents are actually better as working parents, certain kids really thrive in one environment or the other, you really can't say one is better than the other. I think studies are showing now its really a stable home environment thats the most beneficial, single or married, working or not. My LO adores his daycare 4-5 days a week, from 9-430 when daddy picks him up. He's off & running before his feet hit the floor, & they adore him just as much. We did pick a licensed daycare vs home based though just because of the fear of leaving our LO with someone alone. Not that home-based places are bad!!! My husband lived next door to a little girl who had been shaken as a baby & saw firsthand the consequences. We figured a place with more than one caregiver in the room would essentially be more...monitored (?) Cant find the right word there! We might reconsider when the kids are old enough to communicate what happens when we're not around.

It's slow at work today. My 4 year old goes to a licensed preschool where they have cameras in every class and they encourage the parents to come in unannounced or to watch the kids on camera to see how they are doing. It's a really well run preschool, but it's the most expensive in the area. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do this with two!

pomaq- I completely agree! Both my parents worked full time and I never felt like I was lacking in anything! So I read more about this story, and it turns out (not that this is much better) but the people locked the kids in closets and sheds because they were given a surprise inspection by the state. So they were hiding the kids because they were only licensed to care for 3 (there were 14 in the home!). What a bunch of morons...
pomag - 1 days ago
Sem, that is just sad. There are plenty of 'stay at home moms' who are no more benefit to their children's upbringing than none at all!! I learned a lot from seeing my parents work and prioritize and learned that the world does not revolve around me - responsibility, etc. Never once felt unloved or neglected. It can work, either way for good or bad. Sad ignorant people.

Did anyone see that article on CNN about the day care that was hiding children in storage sheds and closets? Even worse are the comments that people are leaving about this article!
