Born & Birth stories

Your baby's crown-to-rump length at this time is approximately 14.4 inches and the total length is approximately 21.5 inches. The average baby weighs a little more than 7 pounds now and is preparing for birth. You are probably as big as you are going to get and may be uncomfortable now. Most women gain between 25 and 35 pounds during their pregnancy. Your uterus is about 7-8 inches above your bellybutton now.

Although your baby continues to grow and develop inside of your uterus, there is not much room for him to move about. All of your baby's organ systems are now complete and the lungs were the last to fully mature.

If you are uncomfortable with your pregnancy at this time, you are not alone. Most women are ready to deliver their babies. It would be very unusual for you to not be uncomfortable at this time. Your uterus has grown a lot and now fills your entire pelvis and abdomen. Try not to ask your doctor to induce you, unless it is medically necessary. Your cervix is ripening in preparation for delivery and your bladder is under a lot of pressure. You may feel nervous about the upcoming labor. You will know when you are in labor because contractions will get worse when you move around and they will also get stronger and more frequent. Other signs of labor are the breaking of your water or a bloody show as the mucus that plugged your cervix becomes dislodged.

Most of the lanugo on your baby should be gone by now. Your baby still may have some on his shoulders and in the creases of his body. Your baby's toenails have reached the end of his toes. The umbilical cord is about a half inch thick and may be wrapped around him. The umbilical cord still supplies the baby with nutrients that he needs. After delivery, your baby's umbilical cord will be clamped and cut. After it is cut, he will be an independent human being and must perform all of his body functions on his own. Your baby will get antibodies from your body that give his immune system a boost.

4girls want a boy - 479 days ago
Well Bkle you have made it this far, and I hope you make it to the hospital too ..Last night I went on a eviction notice walk..( I walked super fast ) My due date is 5 days away. Today I am so sore it feels like I pulled something. Speaking of only 5 days left, I don't think I will end up alone on here this time at 40 weeks. So many still hanging on.

bkle - 479 days ago
4girls-- im with ya, 24 hours for me is long enough. Ive always stayed the 48 to be with my babies but usually im up and about and ready probably just hours after. I really doubt im going to make it 4 hours before birth for antibiotics so im betting baby and I will be there the 48 :( but better safe then sorry.

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
My first we both stayed 3 days , my 2nd -4th only 24 hours . My new Dr told me if you have group b then you have to stay 48 hours. If not 24 hours only. This time I don't have the group b so only 24 hours I hope. I'm not good at staying at the hospital...

bkle - 480 days ago
I was only allowed to stay for up to 48 hours. My first stayed 7 days, 2nd 3 days, and 3rd 10 days. My 1st and 3rd ended up going back tho. Im really hoping to stay just the 24 hours but I think if I don't get the antibiotics for that group b thing in time they may want my baby to stay until 48 for observation. This hospital doesn't have a nursery just a large NICU so if baby stays I hope they let me stay as well. Crossing my fingers to be out in 24 with my baby this time ;-) How long are your stays 4girls?

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
My last one I was begging to leave 24 hours after on the dot..LOL They did let me go, but I think I pushed myself to soon, because I was still having major contractions when I got home.

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
Me too Bkle ! I would love to have a mothers day baby <3

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
Bkle thats sad that they will not let children at your hospital. The good thing for you is this time you should be home in 24 hours right? How long did your babies have to stay that were born early? How long did you get to stay?

bkle - 480 days ago
Ok so I want my baby tomorrow on mothers day! It probably wont happen but ive been wanting a mothers day baby the last two pregnancies. Common baby!! Knowing my luck ill have him on my MIL birthday 18th ugh I sure hope not!

bkle - 480 days ago
mummytoharrison--that is very lucky you have a friend that is going to do that for you :-) Im jealous

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
mummytoharrison you are lucky to have that.

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
My husband is able to stay , I have an 18 year old daughter and 16 year old daughter at home . It's also very hard for me waking up all nigt to see my husband all curled up in a chair that lays back and don't look very cozy. I need him more during the day for me. At my hospital kids are aloud so my husband will bring some yummy breakfast , and some cute little girls in the morning to spend the day with me..I love the time alone with the baby because its the only alone time with me that they will just about ever get.

HootOwl - 480 days ago
My friend has flown in for 8 weeksoto help out, sp she'll take care of DS

bkle - 480 days ago
That is a sweet bonding time you can spend with your baby and im sure the nurses will help. Men usually just sleep while you do most of the caring for baby those first few nights anyway in my experience.

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
Jaybird as much as I would like to have my husband with me all night, I send him home to take care of teh little ones. Now im not sure what I would do if I had a csection .It may be to hard to do it by my self all night, but thats what the nurses are for..It is a sweet time to share with the baby by your self.

bkle - 480 days ago
jay-- my 13 year old will watch my 3 year old while im having baby. But once everything looks good and baby is born my husband will be going back and fourth to take care of the kids. This hospital doesn't allow kids under 18 so ill be alone during the 1-2 night stay. We don't have any family near so if for some reason my 13 year needs something we have made a friend or two here that said they'll help her. sorry to hear your mom wont have the time off now :-(

jaybird81 - 480 days ago
Question: What do you ladies do with your other children while you are spending the night at the hospital? Do your husbands stay home with them? Family watch them? I have to stay a minimum of three days at the hospital and since they pushed back my surgery date, my mom no longer has those days off. :(

swissmammy3 - 480 days ago
Yey week 39.....really would like to meet my baby this weekend!! Today on my Birthday would be fab. Going for a long walk this morning to see if I can get these contractions started. Congratulations Elisia xx

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
Thank you ladys .. I went and it was great..The only thing that was not great was when I got out and the baby was so heavy felt like she was going to fall out.Oh and the way people were just looking at me..lol I did enjoy it and feel so relaxed..A margarita sounds amazing and I will be putting my glass up to all you ladys the next time I get to drink one..Bkle mini strokes ??? I am having bad headachs too at this point, tylonol with soda helps me.. Onj hot tea don't sound to bad I may have me some tonight.

SamanthaDawn - 480 days ago
Yup, swimming is fine! :) (unless your water has broke, as Bkle said already)

jaybird81 - 480 days ago
Swimming is great for you when your pregnant- takes the weight off your joints and everything! :)

onj - 480 days ago
4girls- I'm almost positive that swimming is fine. My first was due at the beginning of September, and I LOVE the beach... so I bought a big old bathing suit and went for it! I know that's no proof that it's safe, but from what I have read, it's good for your body when you are very pregnant :)

onj - 480 days ago
I'm here too. Drinking raspberry leaf tea lol. Its not nearly as good as a margarita though lol.

bkle - 480 days ago
4girls im still here too just had a horrible migrane since yesterday and im not allowed to take my meds for them, the doctors actually think they are mini strokes so I have special meds but cant take them during pregnancy ugh. Tylonol doesn't do anything! I asked about swimming months ago when I was still at a dialation of 1 and they said you can swim as long as your water didn't break. They actually told me it was good for me and baby. I would love to sit in a hot tub drinking a margarita right about now hehehe ;-)

HootOwl - 480 days ago
congratulations elisiaxx. he didn't hang around, did he! 4girls - I'm here. Just starting the day - hubby has gone to collect my friend from the airport :) I can safely go into labour now as she'll be here to watch DS.

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
It is so quiet on here . Are you ladys ok? I was just wondering do you think its safe to go swimming at 39 weeks pregnant? I would really like to go , but in unsure and my Dr's office is not opened.

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
I think im going to mop my floors today . I have not felt like doing anything in weeks. Its been two weeks since i mopped my floor , and I have hard wood floors. I have only vacumed them.Maybe some laundry too. Maybe I will wash blankets and sheets today too. Maybe play some good tunes and clean my bathrooms too. Then maybe dress up and put on some makeup ..Ahah I have been so grumpy I need to get out of this mood..I hope you mama's are having a good day !

4girls want a boy - 480 days ago
Bkle yes they are both doing a lot better. Today my four year old is eating, and my two tear old seems to be ok with only a little of the virus. I am so ready to has this baby !

bkle - 480 days ago
4girls-- your kiddos feeling any better today?

4girls want a boy - 481 days ago
I started cramping again last night, but I realy don't get to excited about that any more being that it seems to do nothing for me. Bkle I hope you get a mothers day baby too WOW your almost 38 weeks !!

4girls want a boy - 481 days ago
Elisia Congrats !!!! Yay that was a fast labor hun..Enjoy that baby !!!!!

onj - 481 days ago
bkle- I hope you get your mother's day baby!! I'm still hoping for today hahaha. No signs of it happening today, but a girl can dream :)

onj - 481 days ago
Also- if my labour only lasted 46 minutes, there is no way I would make it to the hospital on time. When I go into labour, either my mom is coming to my house, or if it's during school hours, I am dropping my youngest off at my sister's, and my mom will pick her up with my oldest (who goes to the school my mom teaches at), and then I am going to the hospital. Waiting for my mom to arrive will take at least 30 minutes, and I live almost 30 minutes from the hospital. I want fast, but I do not want my husband delivering our baby in the back of our van!!!! hahaha

bkle - 481 days ago
Mothers day is sunday :-) I told my baby that is the day id like to meet him. I've been wanting a mothers day baby the last two pregnancies, common baby! Ill be almost 38 weeks that day so its perfect!

bkle - 481 days ago
onj-- im with ya on that one, im up anyway so id rather be taking care of my baby then just simply sitting here wondering why im not sleeping.

onj - 481 days ago
Congrats Elisiaxx (just thought I'd write it in this week too lol). I'm still week 38 until next Wednesday, but I'm always reading ahead a week. If I didn't, it would get pretty lonely getting left behind lol. I woke up last night with heartburn, then to throw up, then to drink, then to pee. I know people always try to get pregnant women to enjoy the last few days/weeks while they can still sleep.... but...uhm... really? I'd rather be awake holding my newborn than just plain old awake.

leanne1985 - 481 days ago
Congratulations elisia! What a lovely weight and even better a quick labor! Unfortunately baby was too far up for a successful sweep 😞 so still waiting on little lady! Congrats again! Am now off to week 40 *sigh* good luck ladies x

ElisiaDawn - 481 days ago
I gave birth on 9th may at 12:46am to our little boy Harrie-Floyd! He weighs a lovely 8lbs and is just as perfect as his big sister! Contractions came on pretty quick! My labour was 46mins and 5 mins of pushing! We are all home now waiting for our DD to come and meet her little brother! Good luck to everyone xxx

swissmammy3 - 481 days ago
I'm joining you all in week 39 tomorrow. Hoping she will make an appearance as it's also my Birthday tomorrow too and that would make a wonderful birthday gift :-)

4girls want a boy - 481 days ago
Bkle I just think the Dr is a joke .

SamanthaDawn - 481 days ago
hey everyone! 39 weeks today so gonna pop over here now too. (it seems we always stay back n fourth between 2 weeks) I just wanna say I love talking to you guys! :) Good luck with your labors and looking for signs that labor is starting. Even tho I'm having a scheduled c-section I am still looking for signs I might be going into labor. (not too much has happend) Except today after running errands all morning I got my son at preschool, took him to mcdonalds, and when I was in there I don't know what came over me. I started sweating like crazy, feeling tired/dizzy like I might faint or pass out. I felt like I was going to throw up. I sat down while my son ate, I didnt know what to do! I couldnt imagine driving home at that moment I didnt even know if id make it to the truck. I called hubby at work and started crying and saying I didnt know what to do I felt so hot and sick (out of NOWHERE!!) he was going to come get me and take me to the hospital, but it went away as fast as it came. 5-10 minutes later I felt almost 100% better! Maybe I did too much thismorning I went running around to so many places while my son was at preschool. I'm still going to mention it at my OBS appointment tomorrow.

bkle - 481 days ago
4girls ---that's so weird you went backwards in dialation. Maybe the baby knows you've got your hands full right now and is being a good girl and staying until things are just right :-)

4girls want a boy - 481 days ago
My Dr did say that yesterday she had a lady she checked in the morning dilated 1cm and by 10:00pm she got a call from the hospital that she was dilated to 10 cm ..WOW

4girls want a boy - 481 days ago
Just got home from my 39 weeks appointment. Well last week she said I was 1cm dilated, this week she says im a half cm dilated..lol So all these cramp s have gotten me no where.Oh well I have sick kids to take care of so im not in a hurry.I just will have her when she is ready to come out.I just can't beleive im only a half cm. This is my 5 th child and I was always way more at this point, but went all the way to my due date.

4girls want a boy - 481 days ago
39 weeks today !

ElisiaDawn - 482 days ago
Let us know how you got on with your sweep, my sweep is a week today and feeling pretty nervous for it, im hoping I've dilated a little :) im having pains again today but im just going to ignore them as I know I have a little teaser haha! Yeah let's hope he doesn't come sat other wise I will need to teach my 2 year old some midwifery skills ;) hehe

leanne1985 - 482 days ago
Elisia, mine was the same just turned into upset tummy, which I'm hoping is my body preparing for birth however all seems to have stopped now. Hoping the sweep today will do something but I'm not hopeful. Lol Elisia! fingers crossed he'll either come before or just after Saturday! Good luck ladies! hopefully they'll make an appearance soon!

ElisiaDawn - 482 days ago
4 girls, I know :( im so ready for him to be here now I just know he will be late now haha! Soooo my other half is out on a stag doo sat night and my mum is babysitting my niece and nephew and my mum and partner are obviously my birthing partners whats the chances I go in to labour sat night :/ uhhh oh lol

HootOwl - 482 days ago
I am kinda jealous of all of you who are camping and clearing out. Not had any of that. I am exhausted however, but still just did all the skirting boards in Kendal's room on my hand and knees with my 3yo 'helper'. Today I am 39+1 which is when DS arrived. In just 3 hours and 20 mins I will be the most pregnant that I have ever been!

4girls want a boy - 482 days ago
Elisia I was just thinking the same thing. I just cleared everything out once again. I hope thats not the only reason im having cramps.

ElisiaDawn - 482 days ago
Yep my cramps just lead into an upset tummy. ... 5 days in a row this has happened now, im hoping im clearing myself ready for baby's arrival :) sorry tmi ! If I get cramps from now up until due date I won't think anything of it as it hasn't lead into anything yet :( 6 days left to the big due date for me! I have a sweep in 8days if I haven't gone in to labour before hand! Anyone else feel like their bumps have dropped?
