Born & Birth stories

This week your baby has an amazing growth spurt. At the beginning of this week, your baby is approximately 4 to 5 mm and by the end of the week it has more than doubled to 11 to 13 mm! Your baby weighs approximately 0.03 ounces. Most women are ready for the world to know they are pregnant. Whenever you are ready to spread the news with your friends and family, consider the many unique and creative ways of doing so to make this a special time in your life! Even though you have not changed very much yet, it will come soon! You might have gained a small amount of weight by now, but it should only be a couple of pounds at this time. It is not unusual to lose a few pounds or remain the same though. Internally, cervical mucus is thickening and will form a plug in the cervical canal. The plug seals your cervix throughout the pregnancy and it will be expelled prior to delivery when your cervix begins to dilate.

Within your developing baby, leg and arm buds are longer now and they have divided into segments where the hands and feet will be. The hands and feet also have an area where the fingers and toes will begin to form. At this point of your pregnancy, the heart is bulging from the body and it has divided into right and left chambers. The hemispheres of the brain are continuing to grow and the air passages into the lungs are visible. The eyes are beginning to get pigment at this time as well. The nose is developing and the beginning of the face can be seen. Likewise, the abdomen is developing quickly and the appendix and pancreas are already present. As the digestive tract is beginning to form, the hindgut is present. The shape of the tail can still be seen, but it will fade in 3 or 4 weeks.

Even pregnant women get sick occasionally. You should not take any medications during pregnancy unless your doctor has approved them first. If a problem does not resolve or you need medication, your caregiver can give you advice on relief options that are safe during pregnancy. Take good care of yourself by eating nutritious foods, exercising lightly, drinking extra water and getting an adequate amount of rest.

Mood swings can be a pain in pregnancy. It could be hormones, or a touch of anxiety at the idea of all the coming responsibility.

Limb buds are growing quickly, and they actually look more like arms and legs, with small separations which will become toes and fingers.

If my dates are right, I am due august 28th. I will need a c section though, so maybe a week before that? My first appointment isn't until the 24th, so I won't be able to confirm for a while. Nausea seems to be hitting me today. I need to start eating small amounts throughout the day, that is what helped with my son. But finding something that sounds good to eat has been very difficult today. Bleh.

tlc - 200 days ago
Cool! I just realized that I'm now in week 8! SEE YA!!! LOL

tlc - 200 days ago
Monika - if the prunes don't work. Try dried apricots. Also, coconut based soup if that's not too aversive. Also, doc mentioned taking a combo vitamin B6/B12 for nausea. I think I tried it briefly last pregnancy, but don't recall why I stopped. I think I was just able to manage it with ginger ale and stuff.

I finally was able to get my insurance member ID today, from coverage that started on the 1st. No one at my company had the information, so I kept looking around online until I could figure out how to get it. I printed off my temporary ID, all excited to call my doctor and make my first appointment and... they are closed for lunch! Gah! lol

jackie87 - 201 days ago
Tlc, definitely more out of breath. I live in a two-storey and my laundry is in the basement. Carting laundry up and down the other day nearly killed me, haha. On another note, I'm 8 weeks today. :)

tnt-surprisebaby2 - 201 days ago
tlc- I'm in good shape, I don't exercise much but I have the genes where I look too bulky if I exercise too much. So, I think I was play wrestling with my hubby the other night, and only about a min or two of it, I started getting out of breath! My husband looked at me like I was crazy lol and asked sarcastically if I was going to be okay. So yep, I definitely get out of breath easier!

tlc - 201 days ago
I forgot this one symptom of pregnancy I always get - easily out of breath! I just walked up the stairs on the phone and I was struggling not to pant in the person's ear! I remember feeling this way before, but not sure if I had it this early on. I'm not overweight or medically ill. I don't exercise, but I still have no reason to be this fragile! Anyone else have this?

Kady- I did hear since my last baby 4 years ago that there is some blood test that can now tell you the gender. I don't know anything about it. That might be what you are talking about can happen at 12 weeks.

Kadyrae1107 - 202 days ago
Tnt- they do the genetic testing between 10/12 weeks unless you say you dont want it. I have insurance so im not sure if it costs more. But today the doc told me you can find out the gender by the down syndrome testing..so i wouldnt think to find out the gender cost more since the results from the downs already shows it. I asked about the CVS but because i havr no high risks or anything.he said i shouldnt worry about it...thats when he brought up about how we can find out the gender from.the down syndrome test that ill get done in 2 1/2 weeks!!

tlc - 202 days ago
for down's you can get a CVS test at 10 weeks to definitively see the chromosomes (I'm doing it). At 12 weeks you get an u/s to look at the neck space - called nuchal something I think - along with blood testing and they just give you the odds. You can also do an amnio later on.

tnt-surprisebaby2 - 202 days ago
kady- do you request it as they give you the test? Or do you pay to have the test done? I haven't looked it up to see if the down syndrome/gender test was standardized or something you have to ask about. If it's not too expensive, I'll be asking my doc about it!

Kadyrae1107 - 202 days ago
Hello everyone!! I hope everyone enjoyed their thursday :) I sure did!!! Im in the greatest mood. I got to see my little itty bitty baby! The heart rate was 156. I also found out I have a cyst on my ovary & a tilted uterus?!? The doc didnt explaina lot about the tilted uterus so I have some research to do. And guess what?!? I get to find out the gender in 2 1/2 weeks!!! Did you know when they do the testing for down syndrome you can find.out the gender?!? %? $( #7

jackie87 - 202 days ago
Yeah I read that it's common to get streaks or spotting due to a surge of hormones during the time you were supposed to get a period, and on my period tracker, I would be just finishing my period now, so I'm not going to worry. I am more concerned that maybe I still have an infection but Monday isn't that far away :)

tlc - 202 days ago
jackie - i'm sure you are ok. i remember having 'streaks' with at least one of my pregnancies. from my one experience with m/c, it was far more bloody. mine was just like getting a period with simultaneous cramps. it was quite obvious.

jackie87 - 202 days ago
Hey ladies...today and the day before I've noticed tiny streaks of blood when wiping (sorry, TMI)...my next appointment is Monday, so unless it increases in my underwear/more when wiping, I'm just going to wait it out over the weekend. The first time it wasn't alarming but it's hard to not have some anxiety when it happens again. I did spot for a big in my last pregnancy with no issue do I'm thinking it's okay. Just going to have a nap and try to relax, haha.

Kadyrae1107 - 202 days ago
Im supposed to start week 8 on saturday! But like tnt said ill just hang out where you guys are! Lol

Kadyrae1107 - 202 days ago
So its about noon here and i hVe my first prenatal doc appointment & ultrasound at 230. Im so excited but at the same time im really nervous. And i probably will be nervous until i see my little bambino on the u/s and hear the tech say everything looks good.

tnt-surprisebaby2 - 202 days ago
tlc- I'm glad it went away! I haven't spotted since my last scare, seeing it was really scary. I'm supposed to be in week 8 today according to LMP but I'll just hang out wherever you guys are, y'all are my support group! :-)

Kadyrae1107 - 202 days ago
Imsoexcited- oh okay so your right by century 3 mall. I used to go to that mall all the time but noe i just drive out to Robinson mall. TLC- so happy to hear thr bleed%ng stop!!

tlc - 202 days ago
Happy to report that my bleeding stopped. My OB messed with my apparently inflamed cervix yesterday. Just in case anyone else experiences the same thing, it clearly can be gone by the next day.....Seeing blood really freaks me out, especially after having an m/c in Sept.

chrissy0423 - 202 days ago
Hello, week 7. I hope everyone is doing well!

imsoexcited - 202 days ago
Kadyrae I'm in west mifflin :) not to far from you!

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
Its only been like this today. I didnt have much heartburn with my DD. Thank goodness tums really work!!

tlc - 203 days ago
I don't feel like acid but I often feel like my food is filled up into my esophagus (it's not), kind of like when you overeat. It's not food though, because I sometimes wake up feeling like that. It feels like a pressure right under my breastbone. I've been thinking it's probably like a heartburn and I should try some Tums to see if it makes a different. In a few months, I will definitely be living on Tums if it's anything like my previous pregnancy. I insisted on eating them even during labor, against medical advice. I told them I couldn't push b/c the heartburn was too distracting!

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
Is anyone else eating Tums like candy?? Holy moly do i have heartbearn & indigestion!!!!!

tlc - 203 days ago
in my area of new york they changed the pap regulations last year. used to be a big push for once per year but when i went for mine last october they said that now they only do it once in a while. scared me - i liked getting the negative result each year. it felt responsible.

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
IMSOEXCITED- where at in Pittsburgh are you? Im.literally 5 minutes from downtown. Born & raised in Mt. Washington!

tnt-surprisebaby2 - 203 days ago
funtimemum80-yeah, it's normal for women to get pap smears once a year, but I haven't had one in 3 1/2 years, for many reasons lol. I've only had sex with one guy, my current husband, and he'd only been with one girl before me, so when I was preggers and they checked for STD's, I didn't have any so I'm good there still lol. Plus I'm really private and shy lol the less people looking at my vijay the better. I've never had a yeast infection, ph balance is always great, so eh, not worried about it. But NOW I really want one because I want to know if my cervix is jacked up. I guess I'll find out when I'm 4 months, which is when my doc checks the downstairs haha. We've been having a lot of H1N1 (swine flu) cases down here, someone in my friends family caught it and died, which freaks me out and keeps me holed up in the house with my loves:( but social media has definitely been freaking out the population, it happens every year.

jackie87 - 203 days ago
Or the big C. I knew a woman who got cervical cancer in pregnancy--luckily they caught it early and she and her baby were both healthy

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
I hate the pap too but hey got to do what you got to do to make sure no ugly stds are there and especially when you're pregnant. I definitely wouldnt want to pass anything to the little one!

jackie87 - 203 days ago
And as for my flu shot rant: it's a personal choice and I see nothing wrong with people deciding to get it. I just think it's sad that the government/media are creating panic. Literally places running out of the shot. If I were high risk, I'd get it too

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
Jackie- the media and news thats all they've been talking about here is the flu shot. Theres all these cases of people being diagnosed with the flu. My daughter is all up to date with her shots and she got the flu shot in novemeber.

jackie87 - 203 days ago
I hate the pap in general, haha. They can never find my cervix and it's very painful. :(

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
We get pap smears once a year here in Pittsburgh, PA

jackie87 - 203 days ago
Honestly, I think they are overly cautious here--to the point of trying to scare the living day lights out of you. Right now the media is on a rampage about getting a flu shot. They actually had an article about some collected data saying that women who get a flu shot while pregnant are less likely to have a premature/low-weight baby. I immunize my kids but not with flu shot, and I thought that their 'data' was such a crock because although I'm no doctor, I type medical reports for a living, many of them delivery summaries, and there are NUMEROUS causes for premature birth/low birthweight. To name a few, smoking, hypertension, HELLP syndrome, cervical incompetency...the list goes on. I hate that when they try to spread panic, they find all these far-reaching ways to convince you to do something. Anyhow, that's my little rant, haha.

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
Tomorrow at my first prenatal appointment i have to get a pap smear, regular first ob exam, and an ultrasound. They won't do a pap smear if your up to date. But its time for my annual pap smear anyways. But im.super excited to see the little bambino for the first time! But the thought of getting a pap smear while pregnant nakes me.nervous!!!

funtimemum80 - 203 days ago
Jackie, once a year wow! We used to get offered one every 5 years then it was reduced to 3 after a much loved British celeb died from cervical cancer and the public pushed for more awareness, the health service here clearly does not like having a rummage down there haha

funtimemum80 - 203 days ago
I am sure you will only do what your'e comfortable with, we get our blood and urine tested but legs stay shut. I have asked in previous pregnancy why it's not done here and was told it's unessasary and an infection risk. It's quite interesting how things are done and explored from one side of the pond to the other. I think if you were here you would prob be confused of our leave well alone approach. We only get seen minimal amount unless high risk, even at the end it happens when it happens lol they on no rush here to do much

jackie87 - 203 days ago
Funtimemom: I think they're the same (smear/Pap smear). Pap is short for Papanikolaou, the doc who pioneered the cervical cancer screening. Here we do one every year or more if there are abnormal cells.

tlc - 203 days ago
fun - I wouldn't call it an internal exam. It was considered routine just to do a bacterial culture for chlamydia & gonorrhea.....which I assure you... I don't have! He didn't go exploring in there otherwise!

funtimemum80 - 203 days ago
TNT, if your spotting you really don't want something aggravating anything inside, what is a Pap smear? We have smear tests here every 3 years to detect abnormal cells incl cervical cancer is that the same? This is done only when we are not preg ( risk of miscarriage) infact anything touching the cervix is a risk of miscarriage so they only test urine and blood

funtimemum80 - 203 days ago
Jackie: totally stunned, how on earth did I get through 6 pregnancies without being checked that way lol It's so quiet in week 8, nobody is there.....all the chatter boxes are here...... I've managed so far to not be sick today, it's my sons 17th and have been round food most of today, I didn't realise how much I've gone off food, yet all I do is eat....something not right there!!

tnt-surprisebaby2 - 203 days ago
Tlc- at least they checked you out, my doc hasn't even given me a pap smear yet to see why I'm spotting. I have a love/hate relationship with him, he's smart and knows what he's doing, but he can be a total asshole sometimes lol. Whatever as long as the baby's growing, I'm fine with spotting after intercourse and every other bowel movement. Well, I'm getting to the point in my pregnancy where, no, I don't have morning sickness(yay!) but I feel like crap if I don't eat often or keep hydrated. Its the worst feeling ever:( Thankfully, and I'm sure my husband's happy about this, but it looks like my mood swings are abating! Thank you there is a God haha I was getting on my own nerves there for a while!

Kadyrae1107 - 203 days ago
Hello ladies how is everyone feeling today? TLC- i hope eveeything works out! And im.glad to hearbyou get to have an u/s next week! I get one tomorrow im so excited!!! Monika- im glad to see you back! Im really glad that people use this site for each pregnancy. This site really went down the drain though. I was looking in week 8 last night and it would be a couple days in between each post. Honestly, I love.coming on this site a few times everyday. The hubby is always working and you can only socialize with a two year so far. And since we havent announced our pregnancy yet, i like coming on here and talking/venting to.you ladies!! But i feel this site isnt as popular as it used to be a couple years ago :(

imsoexcited - 203 days ago
