By the end of your second month of pregnancy, your baby is about the size of a pinto bean and is approximately 14 to 20 mm long. If this is your first pregnancy, you still probably will not be showing yet. However, if this is not your first pregnancy you might be able to tell that you are pregnant. You will notice a slight change in how your clothes fit and your doctor can tell that your uterus is larger than normal. Before you were pregnant, your uterus was about the size of your fist. However, by 6 weeks of pregnancy, your uterus has grown to the size of a grapefruit!
Your baby is developing at an amazing rate during these early weeks. Eyelid folds and ears are forming. Your baby's eyes are still very wide apart on the sides of her head, but will eventually center themselves out. The tip of the nose is actually present at this time as well. On ultrasound you can see that the aortic and pulmonary valves of the heart are present. The tubes that lead from the throat to lungs are branching and your baby's torso is getting longer and beginning to straighten out. Just a few weeks ago, your baby's arms were tiny buds. Now the elbows are actually present and the arms and legs extend forward and have grown longer. Fingers and toes are becoming visible also.
One of the symptoms that you might feel around this time of your pregnancy is cramping or pain in your lower abdomen or side as your uterus grows. Some pregnant women feel tightening or contractions of the uterus. Do not get alarmed if you do not feel this though. If tightening of the uterus or contractions is accompanied by bleeding, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately. Many pregnant women also experience an occasional pain that begins in their buttocks and radiates down their back or legs. This is known as sciatic nerve pain and can be extremely painful at times. More than likely the pain is caused by the pressure on the nerve and it is best to lie on the opposite side to relieve the pressure.
The tiny person is protected by the amniotic sac, filled with fluid. Inside, the child swims and moves gracefully. The arms and legs have lengthened, and fingers can be seen. The toes will develop in the next few days.
The umbilical cord contains 3 blood vessels which link your baby's system to yours. The big one supplies your baby with blood which is rich in oxygen. The two smaller blood vessels return blood to the placenta. This blood is low in oxygen, and full of waste materials. At birth, umbilical cord can be two to four feet long.

Hi ladies! nice to b in 8 weeks! were planning a home birth suposing all is well. it will b my second. the last we opted for the hospital as he was slightly early. Its a personal choice and we all should do whats safe and right for us.

I'm actually using a midwife this time because I want a non-medicated delivery and felt so pressured to be induced and get an epidural with my first. But I might need a surgeon after the delivery to fix the scar tissue from the tear with my daughter that never healed right so it's the hospital for me.

I'm watching a livestream feed of a birth. My hubby and I are going to do a livestream for our homebirth. I think so many people are curious about them... might be an amazing way to share our birth experience and show another side of birth options! http://tinyurl.com/yda3rm8

I finally see how to make a comment.. yay! I am 8 weeks today. I havent really had many pregnancy symptoms except for cramping, heartburn and fatigue. This is my 3rd pregnancy (1 M/C). I am so ready to start feeling this baby move, but at least we had a sonogram on Wednesday and saw the little sprout and heard the heartbeat at 175. We were hoping for a boy this time, but with that heartbeat I'm feeling its a girl... but we will see. Its good to find a place to talk to other woman pregnant in the same week as me. I look forward to following along with everyone.

I can't wait for this day to be over! I'm getting sick, sore throat, light headed, can't swallow, etc. And the time is just dragging on and on and on.... Bummer, I thought typing it out might make me feel better, but it didn't. :(
happybabymama - 18.3 hours ago
yay for being in week 8! I've been having some serious ms and haven't been able to take my prenatals, so i'm taking Flintstones vitamins, LOL! I'm getting the h1n1 shot tomorrow.

Well hello everyone! I thought I'd be in another week, but I here! YaY! In what might of been not a viable pregnancy~they found a heartbeat 2 weeks in a row. It might of just jump started last week bec@uz it was only 118bpm, this week it was 148bpm! Were so excited! And nervous! This is our 1st pg after 3rd m/c! I have 8 kids already, but this is my fiance's 1st child hopefully born alive! We lost Baby Jojo at 18wks & 3 days in 3/8/09.
Many prayers are welcomed! We're walking on nothing, but FAITH! Good luck to all of YOU!

Hi Ladies!! Had our first ultrasound this morning and we got to see our little bean AND hear his/her heartbeat! A strong & healthy 175bpm so I am feeling very relieved and reassured that things are progressing as they should. They dated me at 8w4d with due date of June 14, only one day off from my LMP due date of June 15. The sonographer said that it's likely my doctor will stick with the original LMP due date since it's only a 1 day difference. We have been holding off till the first ultrasound before we told everyone, so I'm pretty excited that now we can spill our little secret, lol! Hope you're all doing well and feeling great!!

Thanks Jes for text box! I love being in week 8... hate the sea sick feeling for four weeks now.. but all worth it.. to each thier own.. I had a GREAT Hospital birth with lots and lots of drugs... 13 hour of labor 4 of pushing.. and ending with a csection.. wouldnt do anything different! Woot Woot to DRUGS! But I really thing those that do it drug free are more woman then I could every be... my epi ran out for an hour.. and I thought HOLY CRAP...
shineon06 - 23.7 hours ago
Thanks Jes for sharing about the text box - I was wondering!
I had a fantastic birth experience in a hospital... it was wonderful to have the support there when I needed oxygen, and also since there was meconium in the water my baby was able to be checked right away. Although a home birth sounds good for some people (which I understand, because you really do KNOW that you're in a hospital), I didn't and don't have a choice because I'm GBS positive so I need the antibiotic IV.
jes76 - 1 days ago
I have also always heard that home births are a wonderful experience but am too much of a scardey cat. I had a wonderful experience in the hospital when delivering my daughter - so much so that I did not want to leave at the end of my stay! I plan to deliver this baby in the same hospital and hope the experience goes as smoothly.
jes76 - 1 days ago
Went to ob/gyn yesterday and got to have an u/s. Measuring at 8 weeks 1 day and the little one's hb was going strong at 155 bpm. My daughter's heart rate at this age was much higher, so maybe this means it is a boy? Also got the H1N1 shot - feel very relieved that I got it. Now if I could only find it for my 17 month old daughter!
MTNWOMAN - 1 days ago
loulou ~ you are absolutely right about higher risk pregnancies needing extra care! That is why we will only stick with our plan if everything goes smoothly. We would never put our child at risk just so we can have things go our way. :) Baby comes first, always!

Not sure why the text box is not coming up but if you click to go to the next page in week 8 a text box comes up - which is how I managed to add this comment!
loulou92 - 1 days ago
Hi..yes your right, home births are amazing, your in your own environment, its much more relaxing, but homebirths are for the low risk women who have sailed through their pregnancy without any complications, and previous pregnancies and births of course. we have such a different system here in the uk, we never see a GP throughout pregnancy, we book with a midwife and she will takeover our care all throughout. to be honest speaking from experience, i have so many GP surgeries contacting the maternity unit which i work in seeking advice regarding pregnancy related problems as they dont have a clue. If any of you ladies can get under the care of a midwife, my adive is to do it ASAP, were much more experienced and we are here to answer any questions you ladies need to ask, and most importantly we understand all your concerns.

Beany B - 1 days ago
Hello Week 9, this is my first and it's killing me not to tell anyone, but my husband wants us to wait until 12 weeks..... It's like waiting for Christmas!!
MTNWOMAN - 2 days ago
'what if something goes wrong' that is the biggest question everyone asks. And from all my research, if something does go wrong they can most likely tell in advance that there are complications and an ambulence will be called. Stuff goes wrong all the time in the hospital and it is the hospitals fault sometimes. I know of 2 little babies that contracted meningitis at the hospital and had to be taken back the hospital right around 5 days old. 90% of homebirths don't have anything go wrong. My midwife will have oxygen and vitamin K shot, and other medical supplies to perform stitches and stuff if needed. I feel so releived that I won't have to deal the politics of the medical system that we are so 'lucky' to have in the states! :) Wow, that went on and on...
stephx3 - 2 days ago
got my second U/S and they dated me 8w4d.. so I'm 3 more days ahead now. :) new EDD is June 13, 2010. Saw the heartbeat again but this time wayy more detailed and it was sooo amazing. Heartrate is 171bpm. I can't wait to hear it.

I am also having a water birth at home this time with 2 midwives. I had a horrid birth experience with my daughter.
boyoboy - 2 days ago
Interesting MTNWOMAN good luck. I would be too nervous what if something was wrong when the baby was born, I like the comfort of having neo-natal services available at a hospital. That sucks you had a bad experience your 1st time. I can't wait to hear about your birth story in 32 weeks :)

Mayb they do.......I dont know but Ill have to look into it with my Dr...... Cause I wouldnt wanna change my Dr..... My hubby says they do tho..... Hmm..... Shows how much I know lol!!

Really? They wouldn't allow it in different States? That is weird! I know that my insurance wont cover it, but it will actually still be cheaper than a hospital birth WITH insurance!
nervousmothrof3 - 2 days ago
MTNWOMAN- I would absolutely LUV to have a home-birth But I dont think they allow that where I live..... I Live in Indiana... Ill Look into it tho !!My Cousin had a water Birth with her 2nd child and she LUVED it she said it was soooo relaxing and easy!! But, I dont like water all that much, sum kind of Phobia I have but home birth would be SOOOO AWSUM!!!!

So, I think I'm going to cancel my Dr. Appointment that is on the 18th and sign up with a midwife. I'm VERY excited about this. We are even planning to do a home birth. Not sure about the H2O or not, but will keep that as an option. Anyone else goign this route? or is everyone going to clinics/hospitals? We had such a horrible experience with our first that we don't ever want to go through that again!

So excited to get out of the first trimester already and get this show on the road. Still feel great.. no sickness so I can't complain much. Just anxious to hear a heartbeat.

Plus the ultrasound in the emergency room put my due date at june 13th and she switched me back to june 17th going by my last period. So i dont know when i am due lol Either june 13th, 16, 17th are the dates iv got so far.
symmanithia - 2 days ago
went to the doctor today. Though it was of no help to me. She didnt even look at the ultrasound from when i went to the emergency room. She said everyone has cycst during pregnancy. Its normal. She didnt have answers to my questions and that was just the nurse. the doctor wasnt even in today! All they did was take 4 viles of blood. Which i almost passed out and had to lay down. I just cant handle giving blood. Dunno why.

Hi everyone, hope ur all well. Im now 8 weeks and 3 days, had an us 3 days ago and i saw the little heartbeat flickering away, im lucky in away as im a midwife at the local hospital and i asked a collegue to scan me. I also heard the heartbeat today using a handheld doppler i was amazed, as you usually have to be 10 to 12 weeks before the heartbeat can be heard via a handheld doppler.
