By the end of your second month of pregnancy, your baby is about the size of a pinto bean and is approximately 14 to 20 mm long. If this is your first pregnancy, you still probably will not be showing yet. However, if this is not your first pregnancy you might be able to tell that you are pregnant. You will notice a slight change in how your clothes fit and your doctor can tell that your uterus is larger than normal. Before you were pregnant, your uterus was about the size of your fist. However, by 6 weeks of pregnancy, your uterus has grown to the size of a grapefruit!
Your baby is developing at an amazing rate during these early weeks. Eyelid folds and ears are forming. Your baby's eyes are still very wide apart on the sides of her head, but will eventually center themselves out. The tip of the nose is actually present at this time as well. On ultrasound you can see that the aortic and pulmonary valves of the heart are present. The tubes that lead from the throat to lungs are branching and your baby's torso is getting longer and beginning to straighten out. Just a few weeks ago, your baby's arms were tiny buds. Now the elbows are actually present and the arms and legs extend forward and have grown longer. Fingers and toes are becoming visible also.
One of the symptoms that you might feel around this time of your pregnancy is cramping or pain in your lower abdomen or side as your uterus grows. Some pregnant women feel tightening or contractions of the uterus. Do not get alarmed if you do not feel this though. If tightening of the uterus or contractions is accompanied by bleeding, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately. Many pregnant women also experience an occasional pain that begins in their buttocks and radiates down their back or legs. This is known as sciatic nerve pain and can be extremely painful at times. More than likely the pain is caused by the pressure on the nerve and it is best to lie on the opposite side to relieve the pressure.
The tiny person is protected by the amniotic sac, filled with fluid. Inside, the child swims and moves gracefully. The arms and legs have lengthened, and fingers can be seen. The toes will develop in the next few days.
The umbilical cord contains 3 blood vessels which link your baby's system to yours. The big one supplies your baby with blood which is rich in oxygen. The two smaller blood vessels return blood to the placenta. This blood is low in oxygen, and full of waste materials. At birth, umbilical cord can be two to four feet long.

ammcain, my mouth is now watering over a bacon egg and cheese biscuit with hashbrowns. Unfortunately it's 12 noon and they aren't selling them :(
jane81 - 11.2 hours ago
I will try taking prenatals, but on the days I can't tolerate the disguisting taste, I will take the flinstones. Ladies, question: I woke up today and my BB are not sore. Is that bad??????????

Off to week 9, see you ladies there!

I know the books I've read have said to stay away from greasy foods to avoid morning sickness, but McDonalds seems to be one of the few things that makes the morning sickness go away. The bacon egg and cheese biscuit with hashbrowns for breakfast works wonders.

Ok...this is kind of weird, but I'm having throbbing in my rear. Like someone is kneading it or something? Anyone else having this? LOL. I know it's weird but I have to think it's pregnancy related because I've never had it before.

Jane...I was just told by my doc that you can substitute for Flinstones...I was very surprised so I remember this clearly. They did not mention a folic acid pill though and said this is only good through the first trimester.
kelleyann70 - 1 days ago
The liquid is seaweed green and is supposed have a tropical punch flavor but I would say it tastes like punch. I like it because it does not smell like vitamins so I can take the shot real fast and not gag too bad.
VI-Chick - 1 days ago
Thanks to you all for your reassurance. I was feeling great for the beginning of the week, like no pg symptoms, I felt too great and started to worry. It's all back today, except for the stretching feeling. I guess symptoms do come and go, glad I'm normal! :0)
jane81 - 1 days ago
kelleyann70, thank you!!!
Just out of curiosity: do they taste as disguisting as the regular ones? I read somewhere that you can substitute prenatal vitamins for Flinstone multivitamin, twice a day, plus a folic acid pill, but when I called my doctor she said I can't substitute. :-(
kelleyann70 - 1 days ago
Here is the name of the Liquid prenatal vitamin some of you were interested in: Nature's Plus Source of Life Prenatal Liquid multi-vitamin.

Thanks KelleyAnn, and if you do remember the brand (or when you need more) if you could post it I'd appreciate it! I'm going to check at a health food store near me in the next few days. I've seen liquid vitamins, but not liquid prenatals - though I probably just wasn't looking really closely. :)

Yay for week 8! Vi-chick- I wouldnt worry if you can't feel the stretching. It might be your uterus just taking a break! It's got a lot of work to do in the next few months. I hope it doesnt work like a dog everyday :)

A little comment about men and pregnancy...I'm on my fifth pregnancy and I can tell you that my husband knows absolutely nothing about pregnancy, nor does he care to know. He's been to over 50 u/s's with me and only gets excited when we find out the sex of the baby. He makes sure I get enough to eat, doesn't want me to lift anything too heavy, but other than that he doesn't get involved. He told me years ago that pregnancy was for the mothers and said it's really hard for a guy to connect when it's the woman who experiences everything. Even when they're born they still belong to the Mom because of breastfeeding. But I can say that later on they are all Dadddy's......at least in this household. I get the pregnancy and the first year or two, and then they ditch me for Daddy. Every man is different, but my husband has never been involved in my pregnancies. At first I was really upset, but over the years I've learned to stop comparing him to some character in a movie. By the way, he still hasn't told his family that I'm pregnant. His parents died when he was a kid, but he has three sisters and a brother and doesn't feel the need to let them know about the pregnancy. My husband confessed to me last night that he is worried about my health. The last time I was pregnant I ended up in the hospital numerous times and it really scared him. Some men just have a difficult time expressing their feelings, so please be patient with them and try not to compare them to some husband of the year. I say that because I was ready to disown my husband after he missed every single one my Dr.'s appt last time until my very last one. I told him my Dr. was beginning to think I didn't have a husband so he finally made an appearance. He also falls asleep in the delivery room until it gets more exciting, and yes I give him a piece of my mind!!!! :)

Thank you kelleyann70!
I feel horrible and so guilty because I haven't been taking my prenatal vitamins daily (I try to take them every other day). Any suggestions? Is that really bad???

MrsHilde75, good luck on your doctor's appointment!
jane81 - 2 days ago
VI-Chick, please don't worry. Sometimes I feel cramping in my lower abdomen too, but some days I don't. I actually freak out more when I have the pain. Good luck on your doctor's appointment on Monday!
vimulu, I have strange cravings as well, and I've heard that cramping is normal - it is your uterus stretching. I didn't gain weight, but my tummy got bigger, and I can't fit into my clothing as well. Hope it helps!

MrsHilde75-best of luck!!!!!! Please let us know how the little one is doing. Praying for you and all other expecting mothers!!!!

I learned this morning that if the baby is hungry, FEED HIM!!!! I decided to work out after I woke up, then showered and got ready and on the drive to work, I got very nauseous and shaky. The poor baby was starving and definitely letting me know!!! He was satisfied with a Sausage McMuffin and hashbrown with orange juice!!! Yummy!

Vimulu - I am not having any cravings but I have had low mild cramping (like AF pains) the whole time. I think it is quite normal and nothing to worry about as long as there is no bleeding with it. I dont know about the anti flu medication. I am exhausted all of the time and can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. As for putting on weight, I have put on loads already but have given up smoking which wont be helping the weight gain, that and the fact that I am always hungry now. I am quite worried that I have had no morning sickness.. do you think I shoudl be worrying ?
VI-Chick - 2 days ago
Last day in week 8 and I can't stop worrying. My last pregnancy, the baby stopped growing in week 8 but I didn't m/c till week 13. My first dr appt was to be tomorrow and got moved to Monday. You know how you can feel your uterus stretching? Well I could feel that almost every day, but haven't felt it for three days now. Do you ladies feel it every day? I try to calm myself by the fact that I have no m/c symptoms, but again, I didn't get those till 5 weeks after the fact last time around. Again, do you ladies feel the uterus streching daily or am I freaking out for nothing???
vimulu - 2 days ago
Thank you so much. I am a new member as well as new mother to be. I would like to know:-
1. I have strange craving for kales (vegetables) and green apple.
2. I feel funny in the lower abdomen a feeling just like when you have Monthly periods though not painful.
3. I had a cold last week and took some anti-flu tablets and since then I have a funny smell from the urine every time I visit the toilet.
4. I am gaining so much weight, canβt fit in most of my cloths and lastly
5. Sometimes I feel so tired and sleepy during the day to the extent that I donβt want to perform any task but rest.
All the above, is it normal?

Dear hilde75... try and relax. Breathe and in and breathe out slowly. panicking will increase the blood flow if any. It is known that spotting occurs for many. It may be nothing serious. But do get to the doctor asap. Two of my friends had spotiing during their pregnancy and their had good helathy normal babies. so it may be nothing at all. Cheers!
jellygirl - 2 days ago
By the way i have started getting the sciatic nerve pain thingy. I almost thought iam getting AF. Thank God its okay now. By the way Im used to sleeping on my stomach with my face down on the pilllow. Is that Okay? Also my homeopathy doc told me to saty away from papaya and pineapple for the first trimester. My friend told me even icecream is bad coz anything extreme hot or cold can create problems. ANyone heard anything about that?

OK...Freaking out here! Just went to the restroom & my normal clear discharge (sorry to be graphic) was bright pink. Not thick but very pink, not dark like red though. I have some minor lower back ache but I've had that on & off the entire time! I am scared. I call the OBGYN & am waiting for her to call me back. I called DH & he starts shouting at me to get to the hospital. OK, I'm about 60 miles from my OBGYN & I told him I'd just called. He never really shouts at me so I know it was because he's scared too. But seriously, I don't need that right now. I'm sitting at work, I always think of my baby & finally being pregnant anyway, & now I'm panicking & really can NOT focus!!!

My boss just gave me grief. Arguing about things that seemed irrelevant. I almost decided to positively yell. Then I thought about my baby and decided nothing is worth its well being. Decided to quit soon... waiting for my increments. LOL

Nic71 good for you. The last thing you need right now is stressed. The old saying is don't know what you've got til its gone. So hopefully he realizes what he had and if not, HIS LOSS. I know its easy for me to say not to worry or think about him, but that baby is so much more important then him right now. That baby is going to bring you a lifetime of happiness. I'm proud of you for getting out. Good Luck girl.

Moving out of my partners place now. He's been dragging his feet in helping me move in, not taking an active part in the process unless I ask for help. I've been here 3 weeks and he hasn't even changed the message on the answering machine like he said he would. But he sure didn't waist time offering to help me move back home. I feel taken for granted and doubt we'll make it. All I can do is go away so I can be less stressed. I don't need someone hot one day and cold the next.
BabySaunders - 2 days ago
NIC-I had a similar experience with my DH. I had a m/c in March so I was really nervous to get an u/s with this baby. When I saw a hb I was soooo excited, but DH didn't really say anything. He was also on the phone with a girl from work (who I happen to hate because she hits on him) and he didn't even MENTION me. I was so pissed. Didn't tell her I was pregnant...nothing. So I think it's a combination of men not being as excited that pisses us off and us being just down right irritable. I know I'm getting more annoyed at everything. My mom just came in here to have a speakerphone conversation with my sister so I could hear. Oh my goodness I couldnt care less! So keep that head held high and don't worry! When he feels that baby kick he'll be just as in love as you are :)

nic- i was going to say something similar to what jane had mentioned. guys definitely don't get excited over the little things like we do. hope everything works out for you guys! you'll do what you know is right in your heart!

nic71, any time!!! Please take care of yourself. Don't stress out. Please write updates on how you're doing. Everything will be fine. I'm giving my husband a hard time too sometimes. :-)
nic71 - 2 days ago
Jane81, thanks for hugs!! I sure feels stupid saying anything but we've only been together just over 5 months so the pressure can get to me. You're probably right about how he handled things with his mum. I do need to be less stressed. Not sure if thats why there's bleeding so I'll give chilling out time a whirl....

Three more days until week 9! I am turning purple holding my breath waiting for week 12.
My week by week book has a horrible talk about m/s this week and everytime I look at it I feel like I am going to jinx myself.
Good news about maternatiy leave! My boss is open to me having the baby in class for the first two months! I have an assisstant and only 9 students so she thinks it could work. That means I can be with my baby alot longer before day care.
jane81 - 2 days ago
littlesunshine, I am a little anemic, and I'm taking iron supplement, called Slow Fe (once a day).
1stMr.Bean, I'm so sorry, and I hope they clotting will end soon. The most important things is that you got checked out, and the doctor confirmed that the baby is ok!
jane81 - 2 days ago
nic71, I am so sorry about this incidence, but please try not to worry. On the bright side: everything is good with the baby!!! I think... guys don't get excited about those 'little' things like we - women do. Maybe he didn't want to tell his mom because he didn't want her to worry about something that hasn't happened. You are NOT an inconvenience! Please don't think this way. Yes, we are more sensitive and less capable of doing all the things we used to do before, but it's well worth it.
Please, please, please, don't stress out (even though it's hard at times, esp. with all the hormonal changes that are going on) ~ it's not good for you and the baby!
HUGS!!!

I found the vitamins at the local food co-op. I think you could find them in most health food stores. I can't tell you the name brand because I took the wrapper off the bottle so the nurse practicioner could read the ingredients at my first appointment. I then threw it away. IF I remember I will post the info when I get a new bottle. Natures' Way has a liquid vitamin line that I like also.
jane81 - 2 days ago
kelleyann, can you please send me the name of the liquid vitamins too? I feel nauseous just thinking about having to take that pill tonight.
dogmelissa - 2 days ago
kelleyann, would you mind sharing the brand & where you found the liquid vitamins? I haven't been able to take any vitamins at all - the thought of them makes me want to barf and when I've tried, it made me gag. Thanks!

Sad and confused today.Recently my partner took the day off work to look after me as I thought I was having a M/C. He was really sweet and attentive and told me how he's changing priorities, putting something else before work. Had the U/S yesterday and asked him to come for support. He was stressing about all the work he had waiting for him while waiting half and hour to get in. He wasn't much support at all and was totally preoccupied. We saw a heartbeat and I was relieved but he wasn't showing any excitement to be seeing his baby for the first time and has been acting distant and preoccupied with work ever since. He says he'll get more excited once he sees an U/S that shows more development as he couldn't see much.I thought seeing a heartbeat would be pretty exciting, especially after spending a day at home with me thinking the worst! And when he tells his mum how he's taken a day off all she asked about was whether he took it as sick leave or annual leave. No question about what was wrong or how I was doing. It was like she thought he had waisted his time and he admitted that if he'd told her why he'd stayed home she'd be more understanding, but he witheld that info, letting her think it was only because I wasn't feeling well, not the whole story. I feel like I'm being played off against her as I'm always tense and ready to defend myslef whenever he's talking to her on the phone about me. I've had enough. I hope I'm just being paranoid but its a recurring feeling whenever he does something nice for me that I feel like I've been an inconvenience and am getting played off or punished (indirectly, passive-aggressively) in some way. Starting to wonder whether life as a single mum is inevitable and maybe a better option.
