Born & Birth stories

By the end of your second month of pregnancy, your baby is about the size of a pinto bean and is approximately 14 to 20 mm long. If this is your first pregnancy, you still probably will not be showing yet. However, if this is not your first pregnancy you might be able to tell that you are pregnant. You will notice a slight change in how your clothes fit and your doctor can tell that your uterus is larger than normal. Before you were pregnant, your uterus was about the size of your fist. However, by 6 weeks of pregnancy, your uterus has grown to the size of a grapefruit!

Your baby is developing at an amazing rate during these early weeks. Eyelid folds and ears are forming. Your baby\'s eyes are still very wide apart on the sides of her head, but will eventually center themselves out. The tip of the nose is actually present at this time as well. On ultrasound you can see that the aortic and pulmonary valves of the heart are present. The tubes that lead from the throat to lungs are branching and your baby\'s torso is getting longer and beginning to straighten out. Just a few weeks ago, your baby\'s arms were tiny buds. Now the elbows are actually present and the arms and legs extend forward and have grown longer. Fingers and toes are becoming visible also.

One of the symptoms that you might feel around this time of your pregnancy is cramping or pain in your lower abdomen or side as your uterus grows. Some pregnant women feel tightening or contractions of the uterus. Do not get alarmed if you do not feel this though. If tightening of the uterus or contractions is accompanied by bleeding, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately. Many pregnant women also experience an occasional pain that begins in their buttocks and radiates down their back or legs. This is known as sciatic nerve pain and can be extremely painful at times. More than likely the pain is caused by the pressure on the nerve and it is best to lie on the opposite side to relieve the pressure.

The tiny person growing inside of your uterus is protected by the amniotic sac, filled with amniotic fluid. Inside, the child swims and moves gracefully. The arms and legs have lengthened, and fingers can be seen. The toes will develop in the next few days.

The umbilical cord contains 3 blood vessels which link your baby\'s system to yours. The big one supplies your baby with blood which is rich in oxygen. The two smaller blood vessels return blood to the placenta. This blood is low in oxygen, and full of waste materials. At birth, umbilical cord can be two to four feet long.

Officially 8 weeks! Yay! My first appointment is a week from today and couldn't come soon enough!!

waitingtoexhale - 27 days ago
Martin- I totally get that. I have had multiple mc's and yes, each time I go for a sono it's like I'm holding my breath. Full of fear and worry. That's the reason for my screen name. I feel like if I can make it to week 12, I will be able to exkale a huge breath of relief. I will be praying for you and your LO!! Lnlm1220, I feel ur pain. For the last couple weeks I started showing. Prob was trying to hide it from work until I'm more confident things are on the right track. Uugh. After eating is always worst with the bloating. But like doc said, r uterus is like a balloon that's been blown up before. Doesn't take as much to start filling it up. Anyway, cute! I bet u look great!

Martin515 - 27 days ago
Haven't been able to pick a heartbeat with my home Doppler yet. Tomorrows my first drs appt, and I'm so worried. I pray there's a heartbeat and all is well. After a mc, it's such a scary thing to go in for an ultrasound... I hold my breath until I see that little flicker of a heart. So nervous.

lnlm1220 - 27 days ago
I look about 4 months pregnant already, I'm assuming because my son is only 5 months old. I'm trying to hold of until 12 weeks to announce the pregnancy but I don't think that will happen, and i'm not nauseous but my stomach almost feels like its in knots, idk and this might sound really weird but I have had the strangest taste in my mouth all week, ive read about a metallic taste but its more of a sour taste.

emily1988 - 27 days ago
I have one from my last pregnancy but I havent been able to pick this ones up yet.

myfirstmkc - 27 days ago
I ordered for a doppler today. Anyone already lucky enough to hear bpm on their home doppler?

myfirstmkc - 27 days ago
Yay to 8 weeks!! Still no symptoms other than exhaustion and excessive hunger..

emily1988 - 28 days ago
My only complaint right now is exhaustion!

zem6 - 28 days ago
So quiet...How is everyone?

emily1988 - 29 days ago
I had my U/S today. One baby with a heart beat of 155bpm. My doctor appointment was rescheduled with a nurse practitioner who I'm not too fond of so I changed it to tomorrow. Another 45 minute drive one way.

3demis - 30 days ago
Wow zem 10 pounds?! I've lost a couple but not much, although I haven't been up for eating many things either. I snack on crackers all day long though. I think I talk myself into believing they help with my MS but I still feel sick after eating them so I guess not. Sorry to hear about the UTI, hopefully the medicine isn't too bad

zem6 - 30 days ago
Well went to my nurse visit today, found out I have lost 10 pounds! So now I am weighing 110 pounds err, just wish I could start eating already. Also found out I have a UTI so I have to start taking meds for that tonight. Right now only our 2 best friends know, my sister, and his mom. We will tell the rest of the family next month when we see them.

3demis - 30 days ago
Hey ladies! Anyone else keeping their pregnancy a secret until the end of their first trimester? Only my husband and I know right now :)

gigous3 - 31 days ago
Thanks for your thoughts ladies! It was only the one time and it has not come back. No pain either. Just makes me worry because I had the slightest spotting last year which led to a m/c. However, this go around, I still have quite a few symptoms. I am trying to stay positive and not worry. Week 9 started yesterday for me, so I am excited about that and I go for my ultrasound this Friday to confirm that everything is ok.

lovebaby12 - 31 days ago
Hello.. :) I am 8.5 weeks. Due November 26. I have a 4 yr old and a 15 month old. Number 3 is on the way! My symptoms are manageable. Have my first prenatal when I am 10 weeks. Seen baby on ultrasound at 5.5 weeks.

zem6 - 31 days ago
I had some early spotting with this pregnancy and my last two (one was a MC). They say no need to worry unless it is red and painfull. TMI this pregnancy my bleeding was right after my husband and I had sex. It was pink that night and brown the next day. I wasn't worried about it. If it would have turned red or I started to hurt, I would have gone to the Dr. Well tomorrow is my nurse visit, when I am 11 weeks I get to see my Dr. again. Hopefully this MS is getting close to passing by that time...I am so sick of it.

dramaqtpye@yahoo.com - 33 days ago
I was told that it's normal to spot as long as you are not in horrible pain. My sister in law spotted her entire pregnancy and had her son 7 years ago. I have spotted a little occasionally but like I said my Dr. said it's not a concern. Doubling over in pain is a concern.

armywife63 - 33 days ago
gigous - hope you're okay. We'll be thinking about you. Do you have to work today or can you lay down?

gigous3 - 33 days ago
Ladies, today I am a little concerned because when I went to the bathroom and wiped, there was some spotting. I called the doctor, but they told me to watch it and if it becomes red to call. It stopped, but I am a wreck right now. I had a miscarriage last year and I spotted once and it was so faint, I thought nothing of it, but then I ended up miscarrying. I had to have a DNC because it was taking too long for my body to do it for me and I couldn't wait any longer. I have a week from today for my ultrasound and am just praying that everything will be alright. These first few months can be so scary, especially if you have miscarried in the past.

elle2 - 34 days ago
luckypenn & Joycelin what kind of pain is it? I had a pain on my right side last week, it felt like nerve pain, it extended from my lower right side all the way underneath my right breast, it hurt to breath. it was hours before I felt any relief. Everything was fine after that

zem6 - 35 days ago
Thirdtimearound- I know exactly what you are talking about!! With DS2 I got pregnant on the pill. i never missed at day, always took it on time (8 pm). I got a tubal ligation done after baby 4, well my body didn't like that either and 'fixed' its self! I am now almost 8 weeks pregnant AFTER a TUBAL LIGATION!! lol so yes totally possable. Seems like my body hates me...haha.

joycelyn - 35 days ago
hey girls i am 8 weeks ,should i be worried i have been have some cramp on my right side

LuckyPenny - 35 days ago
Having pain on my right side from under my ribs to midsection...should I be worried? Its super painful and uncomfortable!

Thirdtimearound - 35 days ago
Tomorrow I go to see the doctor...I can't quite believe I am pregnant. I mean, I have all the symptoms, aches, and pains (heartburn started last night), but since I haven't seen or heard the baby yet, it seems surreal. However, this was a surprise pregnancy (on the pill at the time!), so a lot of this has been surreal. Anybody else conceived while on the pill? People don't believe me when I say that. @Annabelle'smummy: I hope everything is okay. What's important is that the baby is strong. We're all thinking and hoping for you!

preciousbabybump - 36 days ago
Hi girls i read that u can find out based on your placenta if your having a boy or girl at this time so if your bag the black bag that surrounds the baby is bigger on the left is a girl and if its bigger on the right its a boy. Mine was bigger on the left and i am having a girl another friend her baby's bag was bigger on the right and its a boy a girl pregnant with twins both bags were bigger on the left and she is having twin girls! Try it see what u get with your first ultrasound.

annabellesmummy.. Thinking of you and your baby

elle2 - 36 days ago
annabellesmummy that's sounds so stressful! Thinking of you and baby

annabellesmummy - 36 days ago
Had another scan today because I'm bleeding and cramping and baby is still growing and heartbeat is strong. I have a small clot below the sac they think it might be that and that it might have been bigger. Fingers crossed it doesn't drag baby with it and goes away!

annonshey - 37 days ago
This is my last day in week 8! So exciting!

zem6 - 37 days ago
lol Not trying to start anything, I just like to kid. BUT my sister with her twins, she had 2 ultrashounds, early on mind you, that only showed 1 baby. At her 20 week scan it showed 2, they are not identical either! lol.....

dramaqtpye - 37 days ago
I thought maybe it was twins as well but I had 2 ultrasounds and they said only 1 embryo. I also had fertility drugs (clomid) and unless I had identical twins, I know it couldn't be twins. Thanks for the welcome and support. Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

annonshey - 37 days ago
Thanks thirdtime! I'll check into it. I'm feeling better as the days pass. Congrats and welcome drama! 1 week till my first appointment! I'm so excited and getting more and more anxious and less worried as the days pass. I'll be almost 10 weeks by the time I go to the doctor :).

zem6 - 37 days ago
dramaqtpye- Maybe its twins lol! I am due on the 28th with our 5th (oh gosh...) My sister had 3 kids and they wanted to try for one more, ended up with twin girls lol.

dramaqtpye - 37 days ago
Hello. I'm excited to be joining you. My due date is 11/27 and this is my first pregnancy. My DH and I are over the moon in love with our peanut! I also have noticed that I have a bump, which everyone thinks I'm crazy for saying (except those who see me). It's very noticeable.

gigous3 - 37 days ago
@Thirdtimearound, this too is my third pregancy and I haven't been able to button my pants in weeks, if I do it hurts terribly. I think you're body simply expands faster the more times you've been through it. I feel like it's already noticeable. I've had people looking at me, they probably think I've gained some weight, but I am adamint about saying anything until week 12 due to a m/c we had last year. I have an ultrasound a week from this Friday so hopefully that will put some ease into me.

Thirdtimearound - 37 days ago
Is anybody else showing already? This is my third, and I already have to wear elasticized-waist pants and skirts! I am pretty sure it's baby-related and not weight-related...or maybe I am farther along than I thought? I have my first appointment on Thursday...

Thirdtimearound - 37 days ago
Annabelle'smommy: With my first, I had blood in my urine at around 20 weeks, only to find out it was a UTI. It was the same with my second. I also had terrible yeast infections, too. Annonshey: According to my doc, you can take Monistat-7 (no less or more), and insert it partially (about half way). Do this consistently for all 7 days--it doesn't work if you do it for less time or choose a quicker treatment (Monistat 1 or 3, for ex.) It's because your immune system has tanked. Hope this helps!

ELLE2 - 38 days ago
annabellesmommy, sorry to hear about that, thinking of you. try not to stress too much (easier said than done) crossing my fingers it is a UTI.

annonshey - 38 days ago
Good luck annabelle. Sorry to hear of your worries.

annabellesmummy - 38 days ago
So I started spotting yesterday went to a&e this morning and have a scan tomorrow so I have no idea what is going on.there was protein in my urine but that could be because I'm bleeding or I could have a uti. Fingers crossed for a uti please ladies. I hate having to wait to know what's going on. It was less than a week ago I saw my little beans heartbeat!

LuckyPenny - 38 days ago
So I threw up in my sink today. LOL Lovely start to my day! I can barely eat anything without feeling sick. That's the first time I threw up though in any pg...and that happened 3 times today! YUCK!

annonshey - 39 days ago
I am pretty sure it's yeast. I've been eating lots of yogurt and it's getting better. Gonna give it another day or so before I call the doctor.

3going4nine - 39 days ago
Hi annon, I don't know if this is what you have, but I get yeast infections while I’m pregnant and they itch like the devil. I have had enough of them that I know what it is when I get it, but you may need to ask your doctor. I buy monistat 3 to treat it, the off brands work just as well. I have heard that monistat 1 is not safe during pregnancy, but you'd have to check with the doctor to make sure. I'd just call up your doctor's office and see what they recommend. You might have a UTI, bacterial vaginoses or something else, too.

annonshey - 40 days ago
Hey ladies. I'm about to give TMI but I need help! My first appt is the 23rd, but I'm starting to get that dreaded itchy feeling down there...is there anything otc that I am allowed to use...or any home remedies? I realllly dont want to reschedule my appt any sooner than it is.
