Milk in the eyes????
Mumofsix` featured blog about things no one tells you.
`I thought I would, every now and then,
add a little bit of info that
took me by surprise with my first baby.`
My mood while writing this blog: Ok
A lot of babies will at some stage have a blocked tear duct or a minor eye infection. Three of my babies have. It is often caused by small or underdeveloped tear ducts that cannot drain away the natural eye secretions and tears. Most doctors will not consider operating on a closed tear duct until they are 1 year old. All of my children's blocked ducts have rectified themselves after a few months and most will.
One of the best things you can do before racing off to the doctor is to put a few drops of breast milk in the eye in the case of infection or to give it a bit of a clean out if it looks inflamed.
I must say that it must look funny if anyone caught me doing it. I tend to squeeze a few drops directly from the breast into the eye but I am sure you could also express some milk and then use an eye dropper. I prefer the milk not coming into contact with anything else so I choose to drip straight to the eye.
Breast milk is full of antibodies so can help clear up minor infections. Obviously if the problem persists or you are really worried then it is best to also get medical advice but get that milk dripping before the appointment, it can't do any harm.

Inkette - Sunday, 15 Feb I found that breastmilk is awesome for EVERY boo-boo. I had a nasty burn on my leg, swollen and infected. I gave my burn a little dose of milk and it even cleared up MY infection too!
embobower - Tuesday, 19 Aug This is so true. Works like a charm. If my baby looks like he has a bit of a weepy eye, out comes the milk and...voilá, problem solved!
