I know it`s too early for contractions, as I am only 21 weeks - and I also don`t THINK it was a contraction, but I want to make sure! I woke up last night IN PAIN! I had severe cramping in my upper abdomen right under my ribs, then it would move around to my upper back for a minute, then back to the front, then to the back...etc. It was EXTREMELY painful. What would cause this? The only reason I ask about contraction is because they say the can move from the back to the front/front to back. Thanks!

It could be braxton hicks, but generally they are painless, so it is doubtful. It may be irregular false labor contractions, which if you relax, they should subside. It also can be gas pains OR your pelvis and ribs moving around to accomodate your uterus and growing baby. If they continue to be bothersome, or worsen, I would talk to your OBGYN right away to stop any contractions (typically with a shot) if that is the case.

Sounds like it could be a number of things, could be braxton hicks contractions, could be very painful gas, ligament getting pulled, if it continues call your doctor to be on the safe side.

Thanks so much for your input, ladies! I am leaning towards maybe it was just a gas pain...an extreme one... because there was no tightening of the lower abdomen or anything like that. It was strictly right under my ribs, and as soon as I sat up it went right to my back, then back and forth. It's the first time I have felt ANYTHING like that, and no signs of distress today at all. Once it was over, it was over. I hope to God it doesn't happen again, because that HURT!!!

I got one huge contraction like that early in my pregnancy so much it scared me enough to go to the hospital. Turns out I had a yeast infection which caused the contraction and other pains. I never had a yeast infection before in my life so I never considered it. Doctors told me that not drinking enough water will cause contractions as well. Also, I had back pain through my entire pregnancy but when it came time to deliver I never felt one contraction in my back. I delayed going to the hospital because I was waiting to feel the contractions start in my back and go to the front. Never happened.

Try to drink lots of water, sometimes if you are dehydrated they can cause contractions, so drink lots of water and lay on your left side for a little bit but if they become every few minutes you need to go see your ob.

if you are ever in doubt, just keep track for about an hour. if you have more than 4 consistently, call your doctor :)

I would not chance anything. I will tell you from experience and right now i am sitting in Ohio State University's medical hospital on complete bedrest with nurse supervision because my son is coming pre-term. My other son who i had just over a year ago was also pre-term. I started having contractions with both of them at 14wks. My first son i went on complete bedrest at 22wks and this one i went on at 19wks. I was in pre-term labor that early. I am not trying to scare you but it is possible to have them this soon. I would call your doctor and ask them and if you feel more than 5 in an hour then there is a problem. Good luck

It's not too early for contractions, actually. You could be experiencing braxton hicks contractions (they say they dont hurt, but I found them to be uncomfortable at times) or possible preterm labor contractions, which can definitely hurt. I had them. I went into labor at 21 weeks. If you are having more than 3 contractions in an hour, you should go ahead and call your doctor. Or, if it persists throughout the day, go ahead and call. They will probably hook you up to a contraction monitor to see if that is indeed what is going on. You could also have gas, which can be very very painful! Gas can be felt in different places in the abdomen, chest or back and can really hurt. I hope you feel better!
