Like everyone said....they swell up when you are sick..there are lots of them all over your body....the most common ones to swell are the two in your neck. Not serious at all...just another way you body fights off bugs.

Everyone has lymph nodes. Put your finger on your nexk (either side) and push in with your pointer finger. You will feel a little ball on each side. Those are your lymph nodes. They get swollen if allergies, infection, or sore throat is present.
Actual definition:
Lymph nodes (IPA: [ lɪmf noʊdz, lɪmf nəʊdz], are components of the lymphatic system. They are sometimes informally called lymph glands but, as they do not secrete substances, such terminology is not accurate. They are found throughout the body. Lymph nodes act as filters or traps for foreign particles and contain white blood cells.
They are nothing to worry about unless they are VERY swollen. By they I mean the only ones you can feel, the ones in your neck and also on each side of your inner pelvis.

The tonsils in your throat are a part of your lymph system. You have lymph nodes all over your body. The most common to give people trouble are the ones in the neck area. If you have a sore throat the lymph nodes in your neck will become swollen and tender. If you have an ear infection or infected tooth the lymph nodes near your ear will swell. Woman with breast cancer often have the lymph nodes in the arm pit area removed because the cancer spreads to them. They are harder to feel in adults and do not swell or become as tender as they do in children.

lymph node is an important part of your immune system. catching viruses, bacteria, and other unknown materials. Then your unique white blood cells destroy the unwanted materials. Neck Lymph Node are found on either side of the neck, behind your ears, or under your chin. Swollen Lymph Node is caused by an infection that your lymph node is destroying. A slight enlargement and softness means the swollen lymph node is succeeding in the tough battle. It is severely infected when the swollen lymph node enlarges more than 1 inch across.
If your swollen lymph node is over 2 inches across or the covering skin is pink, unfortunately it is losing in the tough battle. You should contact your health professional immediately.
A swollen lymph node not returning to normal size, which is about 1/3 inch across, after a month should be checked by a health professional.

Lymph nodes become enlarged when you fight infections, esp.in your neck, they are also found in your armpits and grin, they help drain fluid and help disperse white cells to fight infection. If your son has a lump on his neck, i would definitely be getting it checked out, has he recently had a cough or cold? as this can have caused the enlargement.

Sometimes before you get a headcold you can feel your lymph node in your neck feel swollen and sore.
Nodes act as filters, with an internal honeycomb of reticular connective tissue filled with lymphocytes that collect and destroy bacteria and viruses. When the body is fighting an infection, lymphocytes multiply rapidly and produce a characteristic swelling of the lymph nodes. When the lyphatic fluid is in the tissues before going into a lymph node it is called interstitial fluid.

If you are worried about a lump or even just questioning it is better to talk to a doc. Lymph nodes are part of the immune system and help to filter out harmfull stuff in our bodies. They get swollen when we are fighting off infection and can stay that way for a bit. My daughter at birth had a lump in her neck it turned out to be a lump of muscle. Now she has a lump in her abdomen and it is a hyrneia and has to be repaired. Don't be put off by thinking about what it could be if you are worried get it checked.

Dear ttasha,
Most of the time, lumps in small children's scalps or necks turn out to be normal. Occasionally, though, they are an early sign of a serious infection or malignancy.
But rather than me try to quote the entire thing, I will just give you this link that I think might be very useful and informative to you.

I hope this helps!
Best wishes to you and your son.
