this is kind of a wierd question but what kind of stool softener works best for you mamas? in my culture, the first month after we give birth, we`re strictly on a chicken soup diet and warm water! nothing else! this is suppose to help cleanse our body... and since i am not getting enough nutrients else where, i am having hard stool. i am afraid to use the bathroom at times due to my stitches! sorry tmi! any suggestions would be helpful!

Melanie07 - 106 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I used Dulcolax. That is what they gave me in the hospital. It works good.

slnkl - 110 days ago i started taking docusate sodium (like colace) and its working, but i think it has an effect on my baby as well since i am breastfeeding. should i stop and keep having the hard stool or should it be okay?

Mommyof2boys - 111 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Colace is suppose to be really good and not upset your stomach as bad some can.

gr8scottswife - 111 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Add a fiber supplement to your diet or fruit and drink more water.

kayleighrobo - 111 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i had lactolouse prescribed by my docter it doesnt make you have the runs it just softens it up enough to be able to not be in as much pain drink lots of water and i had a tear in my bottom from when i first passed a stool coz i was scared to go it hardened up too much so my docter said sorry if its a bit tmi use vasaline (pertroleum jelly) when you go it will make it much easier xx

caitlin h - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Colace worked for me too- I used to DREAD going poop with my stitches!!! Still makes me cringe 5 months later to think of it! It worked great though, and got me through the healing stage! Good luck!

Brandi J. - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I used Metamucil and this helped. I am always given one while in the hospital after delivery, but not sure what brand it is. Try to increase your fiber and water intake, if anything it will keep you regular and keep you from becoming constipated. I, too, was afraid of using the bathroom when I had stitches. I was told not to worry, b/c I could not rip my stitches, but that was hard for me to believe!

jessicadarling - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I know some ladies are recommending fruit but any citrus fruits especially pears in my experience turned my baby totally gassy, that is if you are breast feeding. MY doctor just recommended that I take Colace so I got the drug store brand stool softener and it works great. I am still taking it 2 weeks postpartum as I still have stitches and it isn't the most fun to go #2 with stitches down there.

sarahann - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I took Metamucil which was great. It is a fibre supplement and you can get it with added calcium as well. It is safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding. You can get it in capsule form or as a powder that you mix with water and drink. I had stitches as well, and while it didn't take the fear away, it certainly made it a lot easier.

michaela - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I find a large handful of dried apricots gets me going! Prune juice or prunes are also a great helper, it is also good for baby if he gets constipated _ i know this is rare when they are breast fed but my little girl got stuck at about 9 weeks, takes about 3 hours to get their system moving again. Hope this helps. xx

ibudoris - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) The best natural stool softeners are plenty of fluids, pears, prunes, papaya, sour sop, grapes and suprisingly kiwi. I don't know if you can sneak any of those into your diet, but good luck!

klasnaya - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Wow, eat an apple a day or a pear. That should help keep you regular and clean you out. you can buy fiber mix or fiber pills that realy helps!

blessed-in-atl - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I used dulcolax

mzmommy2b - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) In the hospital, they gave me mineral oil which I had to mix with Orange Juice. Worked pretty well... Also, Coffee will loosen your stool as well!

JennSever - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i use milk of magnesia..it mild and you can literally feeling it working so no surprises. you need fiber and protein to get regular and provide good breast milk.

slnkl - 112 days ago i just got docusate sodium... hope it works!

LMO - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) metamucil worked good for me

*Precious.Moments* - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i used colace... it takes 12-72 hours tho.. but its not harsh on your system.. i had a c-section and its what the hospital recommended.. good luck!

kayla-love - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I eat plenty of fiber and drink orange juice and sometimes eat yougurt with prunes, nuts and berries.

mattie4 - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i was only allowed colace due to the fact that i was breastfeeding. It seem to do ok. If you still have trouble i would call your dr and they can probably give you something a little stronger.

Carmione - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) some alternatives to a stool softner is a fiber supplement. I take the fiber choice chewables every morning. They taste like sweet-tart candies. They work very well. If you can't stomach apple or prune juice guava or mango juice works just as good.

kbushby - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) um. i would just drink some apple juice or prune juice. if not i know my mom eats this stool softner sometimes that is chocolate. but i would double check with your doctor if you are breast feeding.

mommy-of-3 - 112 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Have you asked your doctor about this? Sometimes they will actually give you a stool softener after you deliver if you let them know you are having trouble.
