those that have an established routine, when did you start... and how to go about beginning one. My child is almost 5 weeks, and it seems her sleep pattern fluctuates so much that I can`t really get a set pattern down.

Be loud all the time so that at night if you have some people over and they are being loud it wont wake up the baby her sleep patterns will start becoming regular and she grows

The idea is to try and get baby used to the differences between days and nights. During the day turn on the television, make noise, don't tip-toe around. At night keep the lights dim, keep the noise down, this should encourage sleeping more at night than during the day. After about 2 months of this the baby should start to catch on.

It is good to start one now, but be flexible, b/c it may take your baby a while to "get into it". Babies feel more secure when they know what to expect. I consider a routine to be something I do in a particular order, but not a specific time, that is what I call a "schedule" , and it is a little more difficult to do w/ out getting stressed, b/c lets face it, babies cannot tell time! :o) I think that 5 weeks is a little too early to get to "strict" w/ a schedule or a routine, but certainly not too early to start trying to establish one.

About 2 months cause my baby boy now is 10 weeks old and just started sleeping thru the night about 3 weeks ago, but he is eating more than at birth, so he is fuller ... plus I have a 2 yr old, I MUST have a routine, otherwise I'll go crazy.

With my son i had a routine set from day one. We South Africans have mothers who are verry involved in their grandchildrens lives. My son had a routine set from the day he arrived from hospital. bath time, sleep time & feeding time was at the exact times every day.

I didn't really start a routine until my daughter was sleeping through the night- 6-8 hours which was at about 8 weeks. I only established a night time routine, during the day i was and still am flexible to her needs, but here in the UK we get 9 months paid maternity leave so it is slightly different. you need to set a routine that fits in with your lifestyle, if your back at work soon etc, you need to work that out.

5 wks is still a bit young to gat in to a routine i would wait untill she starts sleeping though the night more othen or wait till she is at least 3 mths old. but if your breastfeeding then i would just wait till she gets herself into a routine.

I didn't really get a set pattern until my daughter was on solids. The feeding of the solids were always the same time but the bottle I still went by hours. Right now my 5.5 month old son eats pablum at 9am and 6pm and his bottle still every 4hours whenever they end up being. Once they get to breakfast, lunch and dinner it starts coming together so more like 6-7months, and still with teething and sleep pattern changes it wasn't set in stone, but you will work something out sooner or later I PROMISE

Hi there, I started with my first child as soon as he came home. We got him into a routine where he would wake, have a little play, feed, play then sleep. A GR8 book we had at the time was called " On becoming Baby Wise by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam . printed 2001 in USA by Parent-Wise solutions. It was fantastic and we had our little fella sleeping through the night ( say 10pm to 7 am) by the time he was nine weeks old...Bliss! This book talks about how to establish a routine etc. I need to find a new copy myself! Cheers,Mellow yellow
