I am 5 weeks along. I don`t see my OB till May 16th. I know with my last pregnancy (I miscarried June 07) the nurse gave me loads of pre-natal vitamins at my initial visit. Is is ok to wait till then or should I be taking some now?? What do you recommend?

Yeah you should take folic acid - anything else isnt necessary unless your doctor advises it.

you should be taking them now. Are you taking any folic acid suppliments? Folic acid is needed from day so the neural tube close properly.

Go get them, start taking them now. If they happen to give you more, you can just use those when you run out.

My doctor instructed me to start taking them when i was about 8 weeks (but that was the first time during my pregnancy that i had seen him) I take 'Materna' , which is what the doctor told me to take.

It is important to take them now. Even before you know your pregnant, some people say take them if your trying. The vitamins are very important for a strong healthy baby. The vitamins give him everything he needs if you miss some nutrients in your own habits, at least he or she will get them still with the vitamins. 1st trimester is most important. Good luck and take care of your body and his.

You should take them now, they even suggest to start taking them before you are pregnant. The baby needs the viatmins and If you dont have the extra to give , the baby will take it from you , leaving you weak and tired. So good Luck with the pregnancy!!!

I would say start taking them now. Most doctors suggest to start taking them 3 months before you start trying to get pregnant. So the sooner the better :) You don't have to wait for your doctor to prescribe any - most stores like Target or Walgreens will carry some form of a prenatal vitamin.

My doc said to start the very same day that I found out that I was pregnant. then again, I was 9 weeks along when i found out. HE said that he would tell everybody to start right away.

Start now. I started taking them when I was TTC. Your body needs them. This is a very important time. Prenatels are not harmful to take even when not preggo. If they make you sick, try a different brand.

I started taking mine at about 6 weeks, but they made me sick so i stopped taking them altogether. I think you should be fine until you wait to see your nurse... unless you know that you wont be eating and getting what you need till then. Best of Luck!

I always started taking them as soon as I found out I was pregnant. The first weeks/months are when the fetus is developing and that is when you will need those vitamins the most. You don't have to wait for your doctor to prescribe the prenatals to you either, I went to Target and got mine, you can go almost anywhere and pick them up and they aren't expensive.

Start taking them now. My doctor says that she recommends women start taking them before they get pregnant, if they are planning it anyways. She said as our baby was not planned that I just had to start taking them straight away

If you are able then start taking them now. However, some women cannot take them in the 1st trimester b/c of morning sickness, so if you are feeling well, get them started as soon as possible. Some women have to take them at night in order to sleep through the nausea, this doesn't work for everyone.

I got prescribed DuetDHA by my doctor but whenever I took them, they made me feel really sick.. so now I just take "Spring Valley Prenatal Vitamins".. I got them from Wal-Mart. Why buy an expensive kind when you can get decently affordable pills that have the EXACT same content as my prescription ones?

Make sure to start taking them now. My dr actually got me to start taking mine 3 months before I got pregnant. The baby needs those vitamins, especially in the first few weeks. Really, start taking them now, but don't double your dose or anything to make up for lost time, that can harm the baby.

Materna is a great name brand, but your pharmacist can probably recommend a generic that has the same stuff for half the cost.

You should start taking the prenatals right away but the main one is folic acid. Make sure you start that one ASAP as it prevents neural tube defects that occur early in pregnancy. All the best!

I started taking mine the day I found out I was pregnant, and my doctor said that was the best thing I could have done. Even if you only take a prenatal with at least 1 mg folic acid, its the best thing I think you can do for your baby. They even recommend taking them for three months prior if you are trying to concieve, so it cant hurt right? of course thats just my opinion.

This is a very important time in your baby's development. I would definitely recommend that you take folic acid at the very least, and hopefully a pre-natal as well. Do you have a reason to NOT take them? I would think that anything that you can be doing to help your baby is something worth starting now.
