What effects could alcohol have on my baby?
When you drink, the alcohol quickly travels through your bloodstream to your baby. Your baby may end up with higher levels of blood alcohol than you have.
Drinking endangers your growing baby in a number of ways: It increases the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. As little as one drink a day can increase the odds for low birth weight and raise your child's risk for problems with learning, speech, attention span, language, and hyperactivity. And some research has shown that expectant moms who have as little as one drink per week are more likely than nondrinkers to have children who later exhibit aggressive and delinquent behavior.
The most severe result of alcohol use is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), a permanent condition characterized by poor growth, abnormal facial features, and damage to the central nervous system. Babies with FAS grow poorly in the womb or after birth, or both. In addition to abnormal facial features, they may have abnormally small heads and brains; heart, spine, and other anatomical defects. The central nervous system damage may include mental retardation, delays in physical development, vision and hearing problems, and a variety of behavioral problems.
Frequent drinking (seven or more drinks per week, including mixed drinks, wine, and beer) or binge drinking (five or more drinks on any one occasion) greatly increases the risk that your baby will suffer from FAS. But babies whose moms drink less can also develop this syndrome. And babies exposed to alcohol in utero — even if they don't have full-blown FAS — may still be born with some of these birth defects or later exhibit a number of mental, physical, or behavioral problems.
Hope this info helps.....

Don't spend your whole pregnancy fretting about it. The best thing that you can do is just not drink anymore, now that you know.

It depends on how much you were drinking, check with your doctor.

I do believe that you have to drink a lot of alcohol for your baby to develop FAS(fetal alcohol syndrome) but just pray and god will understand.

It happened with both of my boys. I doubt you have anything to worry about. My babies were fine. Just don't drink now that you know and don't feel guilty about it :)

I think you would have to be doing so serious stuff to hurt your baby, lots of people are pregnant for a couple of months before they know and their little one's come out just fine. Make sure you are taking your prenatle vitamins.

They say it is better not to drink but, it shouldn't be a problem. You have problems when you continue to drink farther into the pregnancy. I am sure everything will be fine.

It is normal to worry if it is going to effect the baby I drank and smoked, but now being 26 weeks thank God the baby and I are ok...and I think since I quit smoking for so a decent time now i am still not going to smoke after the baby is born (he is due Aug. 2nd) this is my first...so just relax explain to the doctor and as long as it is not a controlled substance (narcotics etc...you should be good and the baby as well....Good Luck

I had the same concern with this pregancy because I had implantation bleeding so I didn't know I was pregnant until almost 8 weeks along. I was worried because when I thought back on it I got really drunk on Thanksgiving night and a couple other nights before I knew I was pregnant. Luckily I guess it happened early enough that baby turned out okay. If there is some concern talk to your doctor about it, they should be able to answer your questions on this, I'm sure many many women have asked about this before.

I am there with you... but if it makes you feel any better I'm not so worried after talking with my doctor. I fell down a flight of cement stairs in a ice storm... Hurt my neck/shoulder pretty bad... So my home remedy was 2 muscle relaxers, a bottle of wine, and a LONG HOT bath. Of course I had no clue I was pregnant. (I felt much better the next day) My doctor wasn't worried and really eased my mind with lots of reasons why I shouldn't be concerned. Now I'm the perfect angel except I can't seem to give up Feta cheese... Hope this helps :)

I was on holidays overseas and literally drank my face off. Came back and found out 2 days later I was pregnant. I was so scared I had hurt my baby. Told my ob, and she said it would be ok. Lots of women don't know they are pregnant and still drink. But no more drinking now :o) Oh btw, my daughter is 6 and is perfectly fine. No school problems, behavioural problems, nothing.

I think its happened to everyone at some point. I found out 6 weeks along and quit smoking and drinking that day not that it was easy or anything. I deff was a little worried and the Doc said that what you do before you knew you were pregnant should not be a concern. good luck and hope this helps!!

Yeah thankfully that stage of pregnancy is what my doctor calls "all or nothing". Assuming you don't drink through the rest of your pregnancy, your baby should be fine. I know it's scary, but try not to worry.

I was drinking at my cousins reception two days before I found out I was pregnant. Stop now anything that could harm the baby and you and your baby will be just fine.
