Can you hurt/damage the baby by poking at him to get him to move? My husband does not like for me to poke at my belly or shake it around at all; he is afraid that I will hurt baby like shaken baby syndrome or something. is that possible?! I know this sounds pretty silly to ask, but now its got me wondering!!

No damage at all! It's good for baby to have contact with it'm mum, even when still in the womb. Have fun!

I'm at 34 weeks and sometimes I have to push a limb or a butt back in during the kicks and squirming. I gently rock back and forth to put baby back to sleep (especially when I'm at work). The baby is well protected so I wouldn't worry. My husband doesnt like it when I press on parts either. He'd say "That might be the HEAD!!! And you're squishing it!!"

All the fluid is protecting the baby, if you would fall hard on your stomach you should call your doctor, but patting is ok.

I've never heard of this hurting the baby. I did it all the time with my daughter and she came out just fine! Your body protects that little baby better than you could ever imagine, so I really wouldn't worry. Just don't go doing any acrobats!

Your baby is in a giant balloon of water. It would have to be a pretty sharp blow to hurt the baby. I wouldn't poke constantly, just bc the baby needs rest sometimes. but really, don't worry about it. I use to sing to my baby ot wake her up, or rub my belly.

No you wont Hurt him as such but it is always better to use a flat hand rather than poking with a finger.

Poking your belly is fine but I wouldnt recommend shaking it. If you do dont do it hard.. The uterus can handle it...

No you can't hurt the baby doing that. You would have to hurt yourself in order to hurt the baby. They are pretty protected in their warm cozy sac. There have even been pregnant moms fall and not hurt the baby.

no as long as you arnt pushing hard enough to hurt yourself, you definitely wont hurt the baby! when you see your doctor and they check the position of the baby, they sometimes push pretty hard, which can be uncomfortable for the mother, and they will push a lot harder that you ever will. the baby is very well protected in there

I do the same with my belly. Im always like kick you lil one lol and my hubby laughs and says leave him/her alone. Its probably sleeping and Im bothering it. I dont think it can harm the baby though. I did that with my other children and everything is fine. Like the others said the baby is well protected in there.

no it wont hurt the baby if you are poking however if you were hitting your stomach or something it might but you are probably being gentle so tell him not to worry so much :)

No, you can't hurt the baby! Because this is my 3rd pregnancy and with all 3 my cousin has tried shaken my belly to try to get the baby to move for her and I have poked the baby to make sure that the baby was moving on occasions. And yesterday, I went to my OB doctor because I have been having this awful pain right up under my right breast and what I found out was the baby was breached and her head was right there up under my right breast and that was probably what was causing the pain or it could be my gall bladder but they couldn't do an ultrasound to see if it was my gall bladder because the baby's head is in the way. And so I was telling my doctor after I found out that it was her head right there, that I didn't know if I was hurting her or what and she said that I can't hurt the baby because she is in a bag of water so she has cushion. Hope this answered your question:)

I have wondered the same thing myself, but I have read that the baby is very well protected in there. I've also heard that you would have to be hit or poked hard enough to hurt YOU if it were going to harm the baby as well. So I think you're fine with a little poke here & there to get the little one moving around. :-)

No need to worry, baby is safe and sound in his little bubble of water which is made to protect him. As long as your not taking it to extremes he should be just fine, after all look at all the poking and pushing the doctors do when we go to our appointments....

My boyfriend did the same thing when I was pregnant. He would say "leave her alone, you are bugging her". Thankfully the amniotic sac acts as a buffer and no you cannot give him shaken baby syndrome. Poke away.

Haha........I was asking my bf the same thing the other day...
"Baby....do you think that Mario could get shaken baby syndrome from me shaking my belly all the time like that?" lol
But yeah, I agree with everyone else....the baby is really protected in there...our bodies were made to protect them...
But it does feel like you could hurt them by poking!

No, the baby is protected by the amniotic sac. The amniotic sac is filled with the amniotic fluid. This sac is your baby's home, gymnasium, and protection from outside knocks, bumps, and other external pressures. The amniotic sac allows the fetus ample room to swim and move around which helps build muscle tone. So chances are you are not poking the baby directly.

Nah I wouldn't think it would cause any problems because they're so cushioned in there. My mom and I used to have poking wars when I was in utero, and I do the same with my baby. I've heard the same from every mother I know.

No. Some books encourage poking to stimulate interaction with you.

I used to gently massage my sons foot out of my rib in the last few weeks before his birth. He turned out perfect, he's now seven :)

If you think about how much you move around all day in general, as long as you're not hurting yourself or hitting yourself in the gut, I'm sure you're fine, lol. Even in terms of sex, they say those who like it rough can keep it rough as long as there is no pain or discomfort as baby is so padded with mom's body and is floating around in the amniotic sac. So I'm sure a wiggle or a poke is fine... even my ultrasound technician jiggled my belly to get the baby facing the right way.

My husband is JUST the same and yet I poke and wobble away anyhow :0} So long as YOU are not in any discomfort when doing it, it's not gone anyway to upsetting the baby. Think of all the movement our body goes through in a day! And tucked away as they are babies don't even have a sense of which way is up! When you see your midwife or doc they will palpate your stomach very firmly. The baby will feel it but as it's being felt through a tightly wrapped duvet. Only severe direct pressures and strikes can touch the baby in a way that causes distress or damage (like if you had a sudden fall onto your tummy, had a sever fright or sustained emotional stress or were punched). Tell your hubby to relax. You body was designed to bare your baby. Female biology is amazing!

not a definate answer - but I would not imagine that the baby can be hurt without some massive trauma to your bump, the baby is so well protected - like its floating in a water balloon so outside pressure is just absorbed, plus the midwives and doctors can be pretty rough when they examine my bump so personally I would say no x
