i am 28 weeks pregnant and ive noticed my cervix is now very soft and feels shorter/different shape than usual. i also get a sharp pain in this area, and a lot of painless braxton hicks. im wondering if thats normal at this stage, and its just my body gearing up for the birth, or if its happening too early. i would really appreciate any advice.

Your body is getting itself ready. It is normal.

Once conception has occurred, the cervix rises upwards and will become softer than usual. During pregnancy the cervix is thick and 0% effaced. The cervix will begin to efface, or thin out and shorten. When you are 100% effaced, your cervix is completely thin and ready for childbirth. But, to answer your question, it's normal you're in your third trimester and your body is getting ready to give birth in less than 3 mnths. My friend said she was 2cm dilated for 2 mnths.

your body is getting ready but your cervix shouldnt be shortening i would call the doctor to make sure everything is fine

I would call the doctor if you think your cervix is shortening. my cervix was softening around week 33 and the doc said that that was a good thing. i am now week 37 and nothing has come of it. I hear braxton hicks start getting worse around the end. (and you are basically at the beginning of the end). no worries but check with doc just to be sure.

If its bothering you call your doctor to have him check your cervix, it sounds like you are having braxton hicks maybe some ligament pain because of all the streching of the muscles which is normal. But I wouldn't be trying to check my own cervix there are many things that can go wrong. Your doctor should check you around 36 wks and every week thereafter. I don't know if you have already had a pelvic exam but since your uterus is stretched to maximum there are blood vessels that are very sensitive and can rupture and bleed if you are not extremely careful. I would leave it to the professionals.

i am not sure that you should be checking your own cervix. B.H. are normal for the weeks you are in and will probably continue. When they become consistent, and well painful, basically the real thing, then i would be concerned and call your dr. asap. As far as what you are feeling i would talk to your dr at the next appt.

Its your body getting ready for the real thing.. Don't worry. I had braxton hicks with my 2nd child.. If you start getting real pain notify your doc right away..

It's just your body getting things ready to have your baby. If you start having contractions (real ones not b/h) then you need to let your doctor know right away. I would mention the changes you've noticed just to give your doc a heads up but I'm sure you'll be just fine.

its rippening/gettting into position... it takes a bit for things to happen but I wouldn't be playin around in there!... let the Dr's do it for you!

you shouldnt really be reaching up there hun! but doc will tell you sometimes it happens weeks before delievery and soemtimes it doesnt happen until right before you deliever. If you are gonna have the baby early lets hope it doesnt happen until after 37 weeks cuz baby need that time to fully devp! congrats hun and good luck

there's no exact time when your cervix starts to soften being at 28 wks baby could just have their head down and pushing against your cervix. it does take time and once the cervix softens eventually you'll start to dilate as well and that sure takes time. my cousin was 37 wks and at 1 cm for 2 more wks. at 39 wks she hit 2 cm. your doctor could really tell you how soft your cervix is and if its starting to efface.
