my baby is a month and two days old. for some reason, her left eye is watery and looks swollen or puffy. what could this be? has anyone every delt with anything like this before with their newborn? help!

kmokat - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Sounds like a blocked tear duct to me.

JennSever - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my thoughts are a blocked tear duct - happens rather easily in newborns. wash the eye with a clean, wet, warm washcloth and call the ped. shouldn't be too worrisome.

Melanie07 - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) If it is a scratched eye, you would not necessarily see it. It can also be a clogged duct. It could be an infection. I would ask the doc.

jessicadarling - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Babies tear ducts are really small and can get blocked very easily. Try using i warm face cloth on the puffy bits. As well as wiping the eye to wipe up the tears.

lady26 - 164 days ago Rating: 5 (1 votes) I now every baby will have antibiotic eye drops placed in their eyes at birth to prevent infection. This often causes swollen puffy eyes and will also dissapear in a few days. However, your baby is 1 month old I think you should have a doctor look at her.

lmo - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) it could possibly be allergies or something to do with a tear duct

MelissaJoanne - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) It does sound like a clogged tear duct. In case of infection, make sure that you do not wipe the other eye with the same part of washcloth that you use to clean the swollen eye.

monica9 - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) could be that she has allergies, but just check with your doctor to make sure.

mommy2twogreatkids - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I would say it sounds like a clogged tear duct. Totally NORMAL!!! Just apply a warm damp wash cloth to the eye and wipe outwards. Do this a couple times a day.Good Luck

ibudoris - 164 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my daughter had the same thing and it was a clogged tear duct. Massage below it and keep watch for infection. If it looks infected seek your pediatricians advice.

niki - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) It may be an infection just be careful when cleaning her eyes. Just make an appointment to get it checked out. x

kbushby - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) clogged tear duct maybe

Mommyof2boys - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Eye problems can be caused by blockage of one or both tear ducts. Normally the ducts open on their own before too long, but sometimes they remain clogged, which can cause mucus-like tearing of the eyes. If it continues I would make a doc apt, because it can turn into a infection. Good Luck!

athome - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Yes this is fairly common. The best thing to clean and clear up an eye infection in infants in breastmilk - believe it or not !! Put some on a cotton ball or squirt a small amunt into the eye area and let it run into her eye. If you are not BF then some saline solution will also help. HTH

joyfulnoise - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Clogged tear duct, I remember one of my kids had it. The doctor told me to try gently massaging under the eye towards the duct. If that doesn't help, call your doctor. Don't worry, very common in babies.

Baby3OnWay - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) blocked tear duct, scratched eye, maybe got a squirt of milk in there... make an appointment to get it checked out.

stephandisaac - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Same thing happened to me. Soon after, his eye was mattered shut. The doctor said it was a blocked tear duct. Put warm compresses on it 3 times a day for 5 minutes and massage the inner corner by the nose with your index finger. Plus my doctor gave me eye drops to put in twice a day. My son had watery and goopy eyes for about 2 weeks. He is now 2 months old and it seems fine. Hope this helps :)

agonzales - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I was thinking the same thing as jaydsmom. My first baby had this and the doc told me to rub by the corner of her eye(like by the bridge of the nose). They said she was too young for any eyedrops and thats all I could do and it went away. Maybe you should take her to the doc to be safe.

slnkl - 165 days ago this isn't an emergency is it? she is pretty fussy right now!

jaydsmom - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) It sounds like it may be a blocked tear duct to me. Eyes with blocked tear ducts get "leaky". Take her to the doctor.

slnkl - 165 days ago no,i don't have pets! i thought it was alleries at first, but when i took her in for her one month visit, the doc said she's too young to have allergies. she might of scratched her eyes, since she's quite good at scracthing, but i've checked her eyes and i don't see anything inside.

mommy-of-3 - 165 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Is it possible the baby scratched her eye? The other thing that sounds like a good possibility is allergies. Do you have pets? You might want to mention this to your doctor in case it is an allergy....
