has anyone took the test?? i heard bad stuff about it

cindermoon - 82 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) ok one thing a lot of people didn't make clear, there are two tests, the first is a blood test which has a high rate of false positives, the second is the one where they stick the needle in and draw out amniotic fluid, which has an increased rate of miscarriage, personally i am having the blood test done, if it is positive i will not have the second one b/c with the risk of miscarrige and false positives i will just have to hope for the best.

Christina1984 - 85 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i only had the triple quad blood test done where they took a million things of my blood. havent heard back on it yet but the doc said it tests my blood to c if the baby is at risk. dont really get how that works. i heard that the needle that goes into ur belly to check for it can be dangerous. i am not having that done. doc said cuz im not over 35. however if the quad test comes back saying the baby is at risk i will have to have that done.

monica9 - 85 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) No, I havent. I feel if it came out positive I wouldnt do anything anyway and I would hate to get a false positive and worry all pregnancy like my aunt had to.

lmo - 85 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) yes there are bad things that can happening after the test like bleeding cramping leaking amniotic fluid and miscarriage

eastern-Canadian-Lady - 85 days ago Rating: 4 (1 votes) last time, my (former) doc advised me to get it done, bc there is a very high genetic pre-disposition to some other problems. Once I found out the risk of miscarriage, then I refused. The got SO angry with me. He didn't even ask why I didn't want to, so I explained that if I didn't get a positive result, then I would be worrying about a miscarriage afterwards for nothing. I also asked even if there was something wrong, what could be doen to correct? his answer, NOTHING. So why would I risk a healthy pregnancy for a test that MAY come back positive, if there was nothing they could do to fix the problem anyway? He thought about that for a minute then shrugged his shoulders. He had no good response. I said the same to the doc this time. He still advised me to do the test, and wrote on my file that I refused. My body, my baby, my choice. They even said that if it was a positive result, that it was too late in the pregnancy to abort (both times) even if I wanted to (which I don't). After he wrote on my chart (this time) the doc said that there are many false positives, and then they retest and get another false positive, and can even get a third false positive and end up with a healthy baby. So why bother to offer the stupid test then??? waste of tax-payers dollars, waste of time and I KNOW I would stress about it. Why worry? enjoy your pregnancy. good luck

Laura14 - 85 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i didnt take the test as my bloodwork came back fine...if it hadnt i still would of opted out i wouldnt want to risk miscarriage etc. but i agree its a good test to take if you want definite answers

Holly28 - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I took it, it came back negative. Its a good test to take, I mean wouldn't you want to know if there was something going on? The thing to remember though is that with this particular test there is a VERY HIGH occurance of false positives. So, even if it comes back positive there will be additional testing and chances are that baby is more than fine.

jessicadarling - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I was going to get it and my doctor advised me against it. She says that in 80 percent of women they find abnormal cells. Which causes women to worry BUT only a slim few of those women actually have something wrong with the baby. She says that it causes unnecessary stress and not to bother. My aunt did the test and was told her daughter had down syndrome and advised her to abort her baby. She didn't and her daughter was born PERFECTLY FINE! It makes me wonder how many babies don't make it because the doctor says they will be severely ill, and then would have been born fine. Also if you are under the age of 35 the chances of down syndrome are severely lower. Don't cause yourself unnecessary stress.

Melanie07 - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I refused the test. I decided why put my baby in that kind of danger when I would keep her either way. I didn't want to chance loosing her. I did do the class 2 ultrasound. they are able to see more with it.

njstewy - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) They tested me through regular blood work and everything was fine so I don't see anything wrong with it.

mattie4 - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i didnt get it, im preggers with my 4th. I had a cousin that got it and she got a false + she worried alot and then had an amnio to back up the test...and well her baby ended up being fine.

julie80 - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i didnt take the test. the way i look at it is every baby is a gift from god. and if a test says something is wrong with the baby what am i suppose to do about it worry, get an abortion? i dont think so, so i will see my baby when it is born and no matter what i will love him/her.

uhmanduh - 86 days ago well if there is a chance of miscarry then i will not take that test. i dont want to put my baby in any kind of danger.

Baby3OnWay - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) did it with my first but not 2nd or third as I went through alot of stress thinking that my daughter had downs to only give birth to a wonderful healthy daughter... either way that was my baby but I did a lot of research, prepared myself in so many ways and it was hard on a lot of us... so wasn't worth the stress

ashleyandcaleb - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) im gonna look it up on babycenter.com i've never even heard of it.

kathleen - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i didn't take test and wouldn't if i got pregnant again as it can make u miscarry

mommy-of-3 - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I had the test with all three of my pregnancies. The positive side is that if there isn't anything wrong you will know. The negative is that sometimes the test can come back showing positive signs for downs, spina biffida, etc. but in reality there's nothing wrong. My doctor basically said either way it was up to me to decide but he let me know sometimes they can worry you for no reason.

brittany1621 - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I took the test and it was a relief to know she doesnt have it :)

gr8scottswife - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I did not take the test, but I have heard that sometimes the results are inaccurate and you go through all the anxiety for nothing.

baby.bray - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I personally haven't been offered the test but I know people who have, as far as I am aware here in the UK the test if offered to people who fall into certain catagories... older mums, mums who's blood tests show odds of 1 in 200 or greater of baby having downs (depending on the hospital - but that is still only a 0.5% chance) I think that it really is personal choice - my friend looked into having the amnio fluid test, she felt that she was more likely to miscarry than have a postive downs result so she refused x

niki - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I havent had it done but apparently when my mum was pregnant with me they wanted to do it - she refused and when i ask now why she said because there is risk of infection of infection and that you could have a risk of losing the baby... but now adays can they not tell by an ultra sound or blood test for abnormalities?

JennSever - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i have taken the test 4 times - 2 out of 4 were abnormal which is not an uncommon result. i believe now its apart of the maternal screening process, however, you can choose to ignore the abnormal result or go further and get an amnio. i was really young with the 2 abnormal responses and knew my chances of downs was slim and more likely none. but with the 4th test (came back negative) i did take seriously as my age is significantly older & my chances were greater. take the test...if your results are abnormal, go one step further..if you wish. if not take heart knowing its no uncommon to get that kind of result. and if its negative, then all fears are immediately put to rest! good luck honey

MelissaJoanne - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I opted out of the test. I don't believe that I'm at much risk, and it didn't seem worth the worry. Amniocentesis seems far too dangerous to chose to have done.

uhmanduh - 86 days ago well now they want to check everyone.

lady26 - 86 days ago Rating: 5 (1 votes) Yea, I heard it's dangerous too thats why it's only offer to women over the age of 35 that are at risk of having a down syndrome baby and in the second trimester. It's also not 100% accurate.

uhmanduh - 86 days ago the reason im asking is because my friend is giving me some helpful advice and she had took the test when she was pregnant and her test had came out positive. she didnt believe it so she made them take another one and then it came out negitive. she said why did this one come out different. the dr told her oh sometimes that happens, which if there not 100% sure of the results they shouldnt have moms worry like that. well the part that she didnt want done is when they stick a needle in your belly to test the babys amiotic fluid can cause an infection and can harm the baby. maybe its best if i dont find out.

RandiLee - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i also really like this article...i was wondering the same thing early in my pregnancy, and read up on it here... http://www.babycenter.ca/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/testsandcare/screening

BonEsInspired - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Dear uhmanduh, I did not take the blood work test for down syndrome because the numbers are way too small in my opinion. They cannot tell 100% for sure if your baby has it, there are only small flags that can say 'there is a small chance your baby could have down syndrome' and then they can ask you if you want to take the more serious tests which may be risky. Very often you just get anxious and frightened from these sorts of tests, waiting for the results, and then them saying maybe more tests will MAY be beneficial. It is completely your choice and I recommend that you do some other research to help find the right decision for you and your partner. Best wishes, Bonnie. P.S Here are a few links that I thought you might find useful. http://www.babycenter.ca/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/testsandcare/screeningfordowns/ http://www.ds-health.com/prenatal.htm

Mommyof2boys - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Its important and all doctors I think test for it now. I never heard anything bad from it...

asutori - 86 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I did the Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound, which determines the risk for down syndrome. The U/S is safe to do and is done between weeks 11 to 14. If they determine you are at high risk, then you do the amniocentesis, which is the scary part. The risk is also determined based on your age group and family background I believe, so if you don't think you are at risk, there is no reason to go as far as the amnio. Good luck!
