It is a very touchy subject nowadays. Some docs say a glass of wine is safe occasionally. Some say no. I personally decided to not have any during the pregnancy. No sense taking chances.
Here is some info from the March of Dimes
http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332_1170.asp
and this from the surgeon general.
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/pressreleases/sg02222005.html
Hope it helps.

I don't think that going without alcohol for a few months when your baby is growing inside you is a very big ask...I don't drink regularly but I definitely don't when i'm pregnant ...if something was ever wrong with one of my babies and they put it down to drinking in pregnancy it would kill me ...so obviously thats where i stand on Alcohol in pregnancy.

yes, I don't think it's so bad once your past your first trimester. but only 1. some ppl will give you advice saying it's all bad. but I've had wine every week or two since my first trimester (1 glass) and my baby is fine and growing normally. I'm 21 weeks now.

me, myself i personally think that you shouldnt drink during pregnancy. I just feel like if anything happens to my baby its not because of something i did. I think my baby is worth waiting 9 months of being alcohol free.

Honestly, I had a couple sips of wine once every week or 2, and one beer in the summer which i nursed for about 6 hours while I also consumed food and water. If you feel at all tipsy while drinking, you can bet that your fetus is drunk. So I made the choice to have a tiny bit every now and then, it did not have an effect on my son. But this is a decision that you have to make for yourself. If when you drink and you are not pregnant and it easily effects you, then I would not participate at all. Now, i also have a little bit every now and then. If i feel a little tipsy at all, i wait to breastfeed. My boy has never been effected by my small consumption of alcohol and I've breastfeed him while having a bit of wine. The dangers of drinking while breastfeeding can mean that you can either make baby sleepy or too active, depending on how the alcohol affects them. It does not damage them mentally or give them fetal alcohol syndrome if you breastfeed and have a drink- however, its in the best interest of your baby to not have a lot of alcohol while breastfeeding.

speaking for myself...since no one is willing to be the guinea pig on this experiment - i am going to say that NO alcohol is the best. no one truly knows just how little effects the baby. some women have 1 vessel umb cords while others have 3 - therefore certain baby's get little to no alcohol while others get much. its just not worth it to me to play that game. alcohol has been around since the beginning of creation - and based on the past it will continue to be here. i have not drunk anything during preg. and will not drink anything while nursing. if i so choose, when my baby is "done" with me then i can once again be a fish!

I've heard that 4oz of like a red whine is fine during pregnancy, but with all the risk of alcohol poisoning and fetal alcohol syndrom I wouldn't take the chance of harming my baby. 9mos seems like forever but its well worth the wait of having a drink to prevent all the stuff that can go wrong, the last drink I had was about a month before I got pregnant and we go out a lot but it never crosses my mind, I'm so excited about the baby and eating and doing right drinking is the last thing on my mind....

Here's the thing... health care professionals have no idea what amount if safe.
Also, it is much worse to drink at the beginning of pregnancy than it is towards the end(though still not safe). The reason is because so much of the development, such as the placement of body parts and organs, takes place. Towards the end of a pregnancy, the baby is fully developed, just underweight, and with immature lungs.
A lot of the time, you will see children with cleft lips/palates and other deformities, because the alcohol(with passes through the placenta to the baby) prevents proper development and positioning.
And since no one really know what amount is safe, is it really worth the gamble?

Drinking is absolutely not good for the baby. We dont know if one or twenty drinks will harm the baby. Some women can drink all nine months and nothing will happen. Others can drink one time and the baby has fetal alcohol syndrome.

Drinking during pregnancy is never a good idea! There are no studies that support drinking a little bit of alcohol during pregnancy not causing harm to the unborn baby, they cannot say for sure. So the way I look at it is if there is even the slightest possibily of it causing harm to your unborn baby, then do not take that chance! To do so is selfish and inconsiderate of your child. Fetal Alcoholism in a baby is not reversible, there is no cure for this, and I'm sure you would not want to take this risk for your child. Congrats to you!

I personally think anyone who drinks, smokes, does drugs or knowingly does anything that could potentially harm their developing child during the nine months of pregnancy, is selfish, self centered, and has absolutely no right getting pregnant in the first place. To be a good mother we have to learn to start making sacrifices and put our child's life before ours right from the beginning. Life is no longer all about us, or what we want or crave all the time, it's about protecting and nurturing an innocent, helpless new little person. That's just my opinion.

I wouldn't drink at all, there is absolutely no way to know just how much is "safe" and every baby could respond differently to the alcohol. I quit drinking entirely with all of my pregnancies once I found out I was pregnant.

Just I answered another question regarding smoking and drinking, this is 9 months of our your life that you should be avoiding alcohol, and the fact that it could affect the entire life of another human being (your baby) should be enough for a person to avoid a beer or two. Is it really worth the risk? You are also 16 and shouldn't be drinking in the first place... I apologize if my answer is a bit harsh, but our little ones have no say in what we do to them, and protecting them comes with the territory.

young mama> that's a tricky question cuz some say a little bit is ok while other's say none at all is safe. I personally feel no drinking is better and here's why...fetal alcohol sydrem, the poor child suffers from behavior and learning promblems and it also cause face deformaties so I did not drink while I was pregnant, it's 9 mths of going without but it's a whole lifetime to a child to take that risk.

Like kater said....no one has ever proved exactly how much is "safe". I would stay away from it altogether. I had half a glass of wine on new years eve, and cried for 2 days after, lol.
Alcohol can cause sooo many problems in an unborn child.
But if you insist on drinking....pleaseeee make it a VERY small amount (one glass of wine, or one beer)
But really....there is no need.

i disagree with the comments saying a small amount is ok, because it has never been established how much alcohol a woman can have before it affects the baby, therefore, there is no safe amount. that being said, from the research i have done, the most damaging time is in the first trimester, with the risk of birth defects going down as the pregnancy progresses. but fetal alcohol syndrome can range from very mild (slight learning difficulty's)to severe (completely physically and mentally handicapped)and there isnt any way to tell how a baby will be affected, which to me is pretty scary

My doctor told me that I should stay away from alcohol completely. I have read where a sip or two is fine if you are celebrating something special. Personally, I would not feel right about it at all. I celebrated my One Year Anniversary with Lemonade and I didn't miss the alcohol one bit. The bad outweighs the good. Why risk it? The way I look at it is its not just me anymore, I have a baby to take care of (even if I have yet to met the baby).

I personally think its just safer for dr's to say no alcohol at all while pregnant. There are so many factors that would/wouldn't affect your baby such as alcohol content of the drink, mothers body weight, tolerance for alcohol, how many drinks, what size drinks, and how fast you drink it. For instance someone sipping a glass of wine over an hour with dinner is less likely to become tipsy than someone chugging a beer in 5minutes on an empty stomach. There's too many variables for any doctor to say one way or another what will or wont affect a fetus,it's just safer to say no alcohol.

i was told to drink a small glass of red wine to stop my b.h. contractions. I asked my dr about this and she said absolutely not. She said there isnt enough evidence to back up that it is ok to have a little drink here and there. I was eventually put on tributiline. So for me...i abstain from it all. Just not worth it for me...i know how i can get, i would worry all night after the drink.

Okay why do docs say its okay to drink a glass of wine a day? A glass of wine is the same as drinkin a beer or a shot. I would never take the risk of that. Thats just me personally.

yes, it affects the baby mostly in the beginning of the pregnancy. Fetal alcohol syndrome happens most from alcohol consumption before the woman even finds out she is pregnant. its like anything else, if a person smoked for 1/2 of a year, they may have just as much or more of a chance of developing lung cancer than someone who smoked for 50 years. it depends on the person and depends on the baby. i wouldnt do it!!

Its a no no and everyone will say that but wine is ok in small quantities as its fruit... I had a beer when i was 4months with my first as i was out with the family at a wedding and slowly sipped... BUT NO drinking is not good AT ALL and I felt so guilty about it. here and there a sip or two may not do any harm but its whether you want to take those chances or not!

Okay, you've only got just over a month to go until you have your baby, I think you should be able to hold out on having a drink until then. I would never forgive myself if I gave a child FAS because that would be a direct fault of no one else but the mother. Honestly is a drink worth risking the health of your unborn child?

How does drinking affect an unborn baby?
If you drink when you're pregnant, alcohol from your blood crosses the placenta and enters the baby's blood.
Heavy drinking during pregnancy can affect the development of the foetus. In the first three months, heavy drinking can damage the developing organs and nervous system. After this, it can have the additional effect of stopping the baby from growing and developing properly.
Therefore, the official advice is to avoid drinking alcohol, but if you do choose to drink, stick to a maximum of one to two units, no more than once or twice a week and don't get drunk. I hope this info helps i did have the occassional mouthful of alcohol but i stopped smoking.

As a pregnant person your "cans and cant's" change all the time as new studies come out. While I was pregnant the amount and kinds of fish I could eat were changed a couple times according to studies. I believe that the point they try to get across is "excess is bad". I know that if I had a beer or a glass of wine a couple times while pregnant it wouldn't have harmed my baby. I just had no desire to go near alcohol. I have had a doctor tell me it was ok to have a glass here or there, but they just say no alcohol so people don't abuse it. That is when the most harm will be done. SO, ultimately its up to you. You may find that somepeople might judge you if they see you drink while being pregnant, but thats their issue, not yours. As I said, rules change all the time! :)

No level of alcohol has been proven safe for an unborn child (whether beer, wine, hard liquor). All alcohol passes quickly through placenta to the fetus, and the unborn baby's metabolism breaks it down much more slowly than an adult's. This can cause a variety of birth defects. Alcohol is recognized as the most destructive environmental agent influencing fetal development. It is the most common cause of mental retardation. It can also cause a lower IQ, poor growth and development, hyperactivity, and a small head. All this, plus you yourself are only 16!! Baby or no, you shouldn't be drinking. There is no excuse for you to be drinking beer or other alcohol while you are pregnant.

I would say that it isn't worth the risk..I've heard more than 2-3 drinks a week can REALLY affect your baby's chance of developing fetal alcohol syndrom..I just wouldn't drink at all-not worth the gamble at all.
