i have curly hair just curly enough to be annoying i straighten my hair because it's short right now but i'm growing it out and when it's long i use herbal essences shampoo for curls and baby detangling spray i don't brush it i spray it with the detangling spray and run my fingers through it to get rid of the tangles if i have the time i do a natural remedy where you mix apple cider vinegar one part vinegar to three parts water after you shampoo you pour this through her hair rinse it out really well and then for a nice smell and shine like you wont believe put a few drops of lavender oil on you hands rub them together and then rub them through her hair this works on all hair types and actually makes hair stronger(:

DO not brush. Use a wide tooth comb or pick. Get a light weight leave in conditioner.

My friends have daughters with curly hair, she puts a detangler shampoo in and then when she conditions it she leaves a lot of the conditioner in it still and then lets it air dry, it makes it a lot easier to comb and it makes it have more moisture and easy to care for.

Ok, this took me years to learn. And believe me, I tried everything. Stop using baby oil. I dries the air out! Find a shampoo that has some kind of jojoba or cocoa in it. Never brush while wet. Hair is weakest. Always keep hair moisturized. Find something that's not heavy or can weigh the hair down. And do not wash the hair everyday. With hair like that, it's easy to dry out and harder to maintain.

Hair is weakest. Always keep hair moisturized. Find something that's not heavy or can weigh the hair down. And do not wash the hair everyday. With hair like that, it's easy to dry out and harder to maintain. Condition it real good. And keep a water bottle, to spray the hair when it's up in a pony tail or something and kind of dry.

The book is called Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey.
basic CURLY rules (these won't work for straight hair):
NO shampoo EVER. yes, that is right. NONE. Shampoo strips too much out
of the hair and makes it frizz and tangle. Use a light conditioner only
to wash the scalp. Conditioner actually has cleansers in it. My friends
and family who have tried this have found that their curly girl scalps
are in perfect condition now since following this advice. There are
remedies for itching in the book, but basically all itching goes away
once the shampoo is stopped.
NO brushing EVER. I couldn't believe my nieces hair. She has such curly
hair its is nearly kinky. She has had such trouble with her hair all her
17 years. Tangles were the bane of her existence as super-curlies
understand. (You are all nodding!) It has always looked like a rat's
nest until using this method. Now she hasn't brushed her hair in over 2
months and she has the most beautiful ringlet-curls, no tangles!. I
can't believe the difference from brushing to no-brushing. Ditto for
another curly haired friend who hasn't touched a brush in about 4 months.
Both of them have hair below their shoulders, my niece's is nearly down
to her waist. Brushing = tangles with curly hair.
Wet it everyday. Curly hair is dry hair. Dry means frizz and loss of
curl. Wet it in the shower, but don't mess it up. Wet it with a squirt
bottle if you dont want to take a shower. My wavy dd has been following
the wavy rules in the book (shampoo about once per week only, but wetting
everyday) and her waves are turning into botticelli curls (big round
ringlets) since they are getting enough moisture from following the
method. You will want to use a handful of conditioner, comb very gently
while the conditioner is in the hair, then rinse out most of the
conditioner, not all. It takes a bit of practice to get it right, but it
sure has been worth it for the many people I know who have used the
method.
Oil the hair. Jojoba oil is a great oil. Put just a drop on your hands
and run it thorugh your hair when it is wet. I keep a misting bottle
with water and oil in it for touch ups. You don't use enough oil to make
it look oily, just enough to soften and protect the hair.
Gel the curls if you wish. Aloe vera gel works great too. Aloe vera
mixed with jojoba is nice.
Curly hair doesn't do well with any product that has silicones in it.
Silicones are found in shampoos, conditioners, mousses, tangle-free
stuff, frizz free stuff, etc. Silicones are great for smoothing out
frizz and tangles, but the author says it builds up over time and
prevents the hair from getting the necessary moisture. Look for words
that end in -cone or -conal such as silicone, dimethicone, etc and avoid
those things. Use oil or aloe vera gel instead to smooth out frizz.
Plus by following the curly girl method the frizz will be minimized.
Anyway, check out the book if any of you are interested!

You should be able to buy a serem called "frizz ease" at your local drug store. You but it on the damp hair andi t tames the curls, and makes it easy to comb. Like everyone is saying, don't brush it, but is a wide tooth comb.

Hi I would try to use a leave in conditioner and don't brush her hair but rather use a pick or a very wide comb to comb through it. A brush will make it frizzy...

I have a 4 year old with long curly hair too! Her hair looks a LOT like your daughter's hair (according to the pic on your page) except she's a blonde! I use 'Suave Kids 2 in 1 Shampoo' and 'Dove conditoner'. I only put the conditioner on the back and ends because if I use it on the very top it tends to weigh her hair down. For frizzies I occasionally dab in some 'Dove Curl Defining styling cream' on her hair when it's dry - it is not greasy and is actually very soft and smells wonderful! You can use the cream on wet or dry hair. I comb her hair with a fine tooth comb (while it is wet works best). Also be sure to get her hair trimmed regularly as split ends cause worse tangles. My daughter needs a trim RIGHT NOW! lol Also, my daughter's hair has been cut into long layers because it is so thick. You may want to ask the hair stylist if layers would work in your daughter's hair....Hope this helps!

A friend of mine has totally out of control curly hair - absolutely beautiful. She uses Pantene Pro-V for her hair and swears by it. Also don't brush it - use a wide tooth comb or a hair pick when it's damp.

try a leave-in conditioner, and make sure her hair is really healthy, have it trimmed regularly, as broken or damaged hair will tangle much more easily than healthy hair. also, every time you wash, make sure you condition too. i have also found that most 'kids' products arnt really very good, they tend to just smell nice, so dont be afraid to use products meant for adults

I'm a hairstylist and I recommend going to any salon and buying a leave in conditioner (works like magic) called Aquage Hydrating Mist, its in a light blue bottle. Shampoo and conditioner at 4 doesn't really matter, just something that's going to get the tangles out. Definitely dont put her to bed with wet/damp hair, that will make it tangle easier, instead give her a bath/shower during the morning/day and comb it out with a wide toothed comb, (spray the hydrating mist throughly) and then get a product by Matrix called Curl-life Spray gel, and after you've combed through it spray that in throughly and scrunch it, that should hold the curl without making it greasy, frizzy, or crunchy. I hope that helps!

My daughter is two and a hlaf right now with the same prob. baby oil makes it greasy, I brush my daughters hair when it is wet and then I use a light pic to get at it in the morning or I brish it after spraying lightly with water. For shamppoo I am using loreal kids, its a 2in1 but I grabbed one for curly hair... i have used other ADULT products. Gel is ok to use as well but only on special occasions cause you don't want to use too many products when they are so young. I find its easier and stays looking pretty in the day when I tie it back in a pony tail or pig tails... the hair all gathers to make one bis ringlet and I LOVE IT!! best of luck and I know it can get CRAZY!! she wakes up with a ball of friz head haha hard to stay on top of it all the time but thats all the advise I have right now. best of Luck!

Curly hair can be difficult. NEVER brush it expecially when its dry. Try running a wide tooth comb through it when it is wet. I would use shampoo and a seperate conditioner and you may want to try a leave in conditioner, NOT baby oil...thats way too greasy.

You have beautiful children! Make sure you're conditioning her hair, and use a leave-in-conditioner after washing to get the tangles and frizz out. Baby oil will attract a lot of dirt to her hair. Try a curl refining dream as well (Redkin makes a great one) to smooth her curls.
