I think we should get paid maternity leave. I had to use sick days and vacation days for my maternity leave. My hubby got 2 weeks paid paternity leave. What's up with that. I mean I am greatful he got that but, I should have gotten paid. I am the one who went through all the pain. I was the one who work her butt off pushing the huge baby out.

i think every mother should get paid maternity leave because in the time they are off they have bonding time with the baby and make sure they are giving them the nutrients that they need. at the job i have now the only way you get paid maternity leave is if you have short term disability and even then you dont get exactly the amount you would if you were working and also we only get 6 weeks paid. sucks

here in the uk you get the first 6 weeks at 90% pay then a further 33 weeks at SMP which is currently £117 per week (i think) some employers pay more but that is totally at their descretion. I checked it out on directgov.co.uk if your in the uk. hope that helps x

Absolutely! The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. If that hand is absent or hardly there, what kind of kid will be ruling the world? If a loving, supportive, nurturing hand is rocking that cradle, what kind of kid will be ruling the world?

Here in the uk we get paid maternity leave for the first 89 months, you can take another 3 months unpaid without losing your job. I think it is essential to have the time to bond with your baby without worrying about finances. The world health organisation recommends that we should breastfeed exclusively for at least the first 6 months which is why the UK stepped up and gave working mums 9 months off. I feel the this should be a worldwide thing. denmark, korea and i think its kazykstan (?sp) all pay a years leave, so hy doesn't everyone else get it. In the Uk partners also get paternity leave. My husband had a fortnights paid leave but it does vary from employer to employer.

here in Australia, the government is so worried about the population not growing fast enough, they pay every woman (at the moment) 5 thousand dollars for giving birth. it started a t 3g and over the next 2 years will increase to 7g. so this is in addition to the individual agreement between employer and employee, and the family tax benefit, where every family regardless of income gets a certain amount given to them to help with the cost of raising a child, then there is also an means tested payment given to anyone who is middle class or less, as part of the family tax benefit.
this makes it so much easier for mothers who would like to have the freedom to take off a few more weeks when they have their babys, as usually the individual agreement in the workplace is that the mother gets around 8 weeks at full or part pay, depending on the employer, although there are a variety of agreements

Absolutely we should. For all the reasons in Debra's response, as well as the fact that raising children is a hell of a job, and if we expect children to grow up to be well-rounded individuals, does it make sense to be shipping moms back to work and babies off to daycare at 6 weeks old so that they can pay their bills? With the fact that wages are staying the same but the cost of living is skyrocketing, forcing both parents to work AT LEAST 40 hours a week and spend less and less time with their children, it's no wonder kids are growing up with no discipline. Parents are exhausted!

Yes- I pay EI and deserve to be paid while I'm off. Especially since we do not have the population in Canada to replace our aging workforce, the government should be encouraging us to have children- especially people who contribute to society and have healthy careers. I also believe that my job should have on the job free daycare for that matter- since I'm an RN and 90% of my colleages are women, and without RN's hospitals and healthcare can't function.

Yes- I contribute to EI and deserve to be paid while I'm off. Especially since we do not have the population in Canada to replace our aging workforce, the government should be encouraging us to have children- especially people who contribute to society and have healthy careers. I do feel privilaged that my job pays me full-time wages for 16 weeks and now I have half-time wages for the rest of the year. I can't believe that most women in the US might only have 6-12 weeks off. I was barely recovered from my c/s at that time and would not have been in any condition to go back to work. How on earth does that encourage breastfeeding either? I also believe that my job should have on the job free daycare for that matter- since I'm an RN and 90% of my colleages are women, and without RN's hospitals and healthcare can't function.

YES they are caring for their children!!! they work their butts off to work and earn money, better then social assistance and helps to care for their child... something that isn't inexpensive!! here in Canada we get a whole year. few weeks maternity and then parental! ( even the father can take some of that time for maternity here... split it with their partner) I like that idea because the mother and father are the best to be with their children and creative a great bond early on in life

I think women should have paid maternity leave for at least 3mos, that gives the woman a while to figure out if she wants to come back to work or not.

The biggest problem I see with working mom's, you can't have it both ways. You need to pick one or the other. Personally, I think being home with the children is far better than a corporate career(if you can afford to). People make sacrifices all the time, and having children is far better than any benefit than any company can offer- but that's just my opinin.

yes they should. the birth rate is down from the baby boomers and most woman are in the workforce now. WE need the time to bond and breastfeed in order to make healthly children and good relationships with our children. 6 weeks is just not enough.

They should offer paid maternity leave. But the majority won't. They look at it as an elective, as in a surgery. Somethings that chosen. So there is is no real medical condition. Sucks huh?

I believe women should get a 6 wks paid maternity leave if they have been with a company for at least one year because in some household the woman is the bread winner. I have a friend who is an accountant and the main bread winner, who has been with her company for 4yrs and they didnot give her a paid maternity leave not even for 2wks. She had to use her one wk vacation time to help make up. She has 3mnths non-paid vacation time.

Should they? Well of course they should. It varies from job to job, and depends on ones length of service at a particular job as well. There is nothing more important than caring for one's baby, and businesses should support that.

I am fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom, but I do know that not all women will have that opportunity. So to answer your Q, I do believe that women should have a paid maternity leave, b/c they need those first weeks for bonding w/ their baby, healing, etc., and some women do not take advantage of that time and instead return to work early b/c they cannot afford not to and so that healing time and bonding time does not take place.
