I went to the hospital last night because I was having terrible back pain. The nurse hooked me up to monitor the baby and contractions and checked me. I`m 35 weeks, and she said well your 3 to 4cm dilated and 50% effaced. There were 4 different nurses over the next 4hrs to come in and check me and they all said 4cm and my contractions were like every 7mins but then they began to slow to every 10mins, sent me home and said to walk. I wen`t to my Doctor this morning since he wasn`t on call last night and he checked me and said you aren`t dilated at all??? He said that they were feeling something before my cervix that causes the muscle to spasm. I`m confused because these nurses have been to school for years to do this and work on the labor and delivery floor but yet my doctor has been doing his job for many many years and I`m just wondering how can 4 nurses all get the same thing wrong?

The baby will come when it comes so just relax 3-4cm is not that dilated away, you can be 3-4cm dilated for another month.

yeah, i would personally trust the nurses first. But even if you are dilated to 4 cm, you can still go past your due date!! no worries, i would focus more on when contractions get worse or water breaks. good luck

OMG.. that would be so frustrating!!! I had a few nurses tell me that I wasn't in labor and a few say things about how much I was dilated and such... Dr told me 4cm the nurses told me I wasn't. Kind of the opposite but all in all my Dr was the one who was right. I would be so confussed and frustrated but if your Dr is the one to deliver babies hes the one to be listening to THAT and he knows you and your body better then a few nurses. best of Luck with the rest of your pregnancy and Better luck with delivery

That sounds so frustrating! I'd go with what your doctor says. I haven't had a baby yet, but I've been hospitalized a number of times so I've had experience with many doctors and nurses - there are some wonderful nurses, and I wouldn't claim otherwise, but I've also had some pretty lousy ones. My doctor even admits that many times there are those working in the hospital that work too many long hours, and don't always give the best help, or correct diagnoses. If you know and trust your doctor, go with what he is saying. I've seen multiple nurses get something wrong before!

First of all, why did they tell you to go home and walk???????? 35 weeks is TOO early to have your baby, you aren't considered full term until week 37 and even then it is better for the baby's lungs to go a week or 2 more before delivering!! Secondly, I have had a couple of similar experiences, except they were not as drastic. When I was in labor w/ my 1st baby, the 1st nurse that checked me said that I was completely dialated (I was soooo happy to hear this since the contractions had not been that bad so far), but then another nurse came in and checked and she found that I was only a fingertip dialated!!! But this was just between 2 nurses, not 4 finding the same thing and then finding out that they were wrong. Then another time when I was in labor w/ #3, a nurse told me I was dialated to ? (sorry, can't remember exactly now), and then the doc checked me and he said that I was dialated less than she said. One nurse told me it was b/c the doctors hands were bigger than the nurses, but still in your case that is a huge difference!!!! I really don't know how 4 nurses could get the same thing if they were all wrong?! Is there another doctor that you could see to get a second opinion? And I still think they should have been putting you on bedrest, not telling you to go home and walk.

Oh my, that is definitely a tricky situation. It is true though that the baby will come when he/she is ready. Although you are probably excited at the thought of being 4 cms dilated remember full term is 37 weeks so don't wish for it too soon. Then again it is also nice to know if there is some progress going on so when you think things are getting going and the doctor says HECK NO it is also a major bummer. If pains continue head back to the hospital, tell the nurses what your doctor said when he checked you and see if they have ever heard anything like that before. Maybe your doctor is crazy

That really is a tough one! Like stephandisaac said the baby will let you know when hes ready anyways so maybe you should just go by what to doctor says. That is weird how they all 4 said the same and how they could all be wrong.. hmmm wish I knew what else to tell you. Good luck and take care. I hope you make it full term also.

Wow.. That IS a tough one. I would go by your doctor though. The baby is going to come when he wants to...he'll let you know when it's time. I went into labor at 36 weeks with my last one. Woke up with contractions one night and by the time I left the hospital, they said I was dehydrated. Woke up the very next night with even stronger contractions...here I had been in labor for over 24 hours. Sometimes nurses can be wrong too. Good luck and hope you make it to full term :)

Oh man! that's a tough one there. But I would go with the doctor! Because I have had nurses tell me things wrong before that's why I say that, but not about what you went through but other things. Sorry I can't help.

Something sounds fishy there. I would ask for a second opinion personally.
