My one month old baby is breastfed, and keeps spitting up! He spits up alot after he eats, I feel like he is spiting up everything he just ate. I know spitting up is normal, but how much is normal?

Debra - 79 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) athome is right on- my baby spit up TONS and still does but its much better than before. Make sure you are burping him! Between sides if you are bf and even during bf or bottles if you have to. You can tell if baby is dehydrated if they are weak, listless, their soft spot looks sunken and they are NOT soiling diapers or peeing, baby should require a diaper change AT LEAST every 3 hours. If you think your baby has ANY of these signs, bring to ER right away.

athome - 79 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) This is completely normal bubs tummy is barely bigger than a marble and sometimes they pig out a bit or drink too fast - just like the rest of us LOL. They may even projectile vomit at times an it is still completely normal and healthy. If he is dehydrated and not gaining weight then you need to act quickly but continue to breastfeed even if he does throw up alot because it will keep him hydrated , Do not panic and change to formula as the is proven to increase the instance of allergies and intolerance. It is highly unlikely if not almost impossible that he would be spitting up more than he drank although it can look that way at times !!!! Keep up the great work if your really worrried get him weighed weekly and ask a doctor or health nurse to check him for subtle signs of dehydration. If these things are not an issue then he's fine. You may like to take a look at your own diet in some relatively rare circumstance bub may be temporarily intollerent of something you are passing through the breastmilk ie dairy, nuts, seafood, chili ut he will usually move through this stage within a few weeks/months. This is rarely the case but may give you something to look at if you are still concerned. HTH

michaela - 79 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my little one did the same, i had to cover myself in towels to feed her, protect my clothes and absorb all the sick, was like exorcist. Turns out she had reflux and was put on meds to help. If your little boy is putting on weight still then just let your dr know this is happening, if he isn't then he should be investigated for pyloric stenosis. If it is the reflux, meds to neutralise the acid will help and avoiding the feeding cycle (baby feeds to kill the burn but then spews because he is too full), also raising the head end of the mattress in his bed so that the acid doesn't come back up and take out shares in laundry detergent lol! I hope this helps. all the best xxx

Mommyof2boys - 79 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) My friend's baby looked like the little girl from the exorcist, she would spit up and it would go across the room and I would wait for her head to start spinning lol. Her doctor told her not to worry that if she's gaining weight she should be fine and spit up is normal they still are keeping most of the fluids down.

monica9 - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my friend went through the same thing while breastfeeding her daughter. turns out her daughter was allergic to the protein in her milk so she had to be put on a medicated formula. good luck and talk with your doctor just to be safe.

wildberry - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my first baby spit up every time i feed him and i was worried my midwife had me nurse him for five minutes burp him wait five minutes feed for five and so on he hardly ever spit up after that i had to feed him this way till he was six months good luck hon!

lisadpa - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my daughter had reflux and she spit up a lot, but it was not a health concern (just a laundry concern!). The real tests are 1)is baby thriving (gaining weight)? 2) giving you the proper amount of wet diapers? If so you are probably all right! It helped me to feed her in a less-reclined position and keep her sitting up for 30 min after eating (not easy for a sleeping baby but workable, you just hold him vertically). That aids digestion. Burping helps too but in our case, she would always fall asleep on the breast so it was not always possible. Good luck.

candace3 - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I have reflux, and when I nursed she always spit up, no matter how much I burped her. Her pediatrician said sice I have reflux it would bother her, too. He didn't give her medicine or anything. It got better, but not until she was around 6 months old. It sounds like it could be normal for your baby.

kalliemae - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I have noticed that my baby only spits up when he doesnt burp. If he burps, then he is fine. So I burp him after he eats off each side. And if I am feeding him formula then I burp after 2 ounces.

Tierra - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my daughter does the same thing she is always spitting up.... her doctor thought it was acid reflux but the medicine never did anything... i personally feel it is normal but i deal with it constantly.

denee85 - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I agree with the other posts that IT DOES SEEM LIKE IT'S MORE THAN IT IS!! Do try burping him more often during a feeding so those bubbles don't gather in his little tummy, then they won't all come out at once :) As long as your baby seems satisfied after a feeding and has the wet/poopy diapers everyday and is gaining weight,I wouldn't worry..

Baby3OnWay - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) sometimes it looks like a lot more then it really is. My daughter was the same and the Dr told me to try burping her more then usual... even though burping breastfed babies is a little odd compared to bottle fed. It actually started working for her, guess gas bubbles brought the milk up too! If things don't look up or you want to get it checked take the babe in to see the Dr. When I did that they first ruled out gastriointestinal problems!

brandi j. - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Babies spit up when they've eaten too much or when they've swallowed too much air while feeding. Spitting up usually occurs when babies burp. It can also happen when your baby is drooling. Spitting up is not vomiting. Babies usually don't notice when they spit up, while vomiting is forceful and painful. Spitting up is a common occurrence for most babies until about the time they can eat solid foods (usually around 6 months to 1 year of age). The medical term for "spitting up" is gastroesophageal reflux, or reflux. It happens when milk or solid food in the stomach comes back up into your baby's esophagus. Spitting up is messy, but it is a normal occurrence during your baby's early months. It rarely involves choking, coughing or pain. However, you should contact your doctor if you notice your baby has the following symptoms: Is not gaining weight. Spits up a large amount of milk (more than 1 or 2 tablespoons) Spits up or vomits forcefully, Has fewer wet diapers than normal, Seems very tired or lethargic, Spits up green or brown liquid. Just pay attention to the amount of diapers that you are changing and that your baby is gaining weight. Also, if she acts like it hurts her, then you need to mention this to your doctor. Word of warning though, is that some ped. will tell you that you have to stop breastfeeding, but formula is actually worse on the baby, breastmilk is much easier for the baby to digest. Alot of babies spit up, it is normal, as long as your baby is not showing pain, just remember to bring along extra clothes for you and your baby! Also, when I was first starting to breasfeed my 2nd child, my nipples were bleeding and this upset his stomach and caused him to spit up after each feeding, until my nipples healed.

christina1984 - 80 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) my friends baby spits up so much that she feels she isnt getting milk. she took her to the doc and i believe she said she has acid reflux or something along those lines
