my midwife came today with a tranee which i didnt mind but would of liked to of known about insted of both of them on my doorstep.. she seems nice though but when she took my bp she got it wrong.. VERY wrong compared to my midwife who had to take it after my midwife just rang and said the tranee liked how possitive i was with the pregnancy and would like to chose me along with 2 others she was aloud, to follow their pregnancys to learn..so i felt abit flattered she chose me when she sees lots of other women.. she said so itd be ok for her to come with me to your apponitments and hospital and i said yeah..do you mean my scans and she said yeah is that alright and i said yeah then she said she`ll be there at the bith but she wouldnt be doing anything.. just watching and then told me my next appointment and went.. well when i got off the phone i realised wait.. i didnt want no tranees just standing around me looking at me and taking notes of how much pain and such i was in i really didnt want it i just wanted people there who HAD to be there in order for me to have my baby and now i dont really want to say `` oh btw i dont want her there at the birth `` after id already agree`d she could be shall i just lump it and get use to it? and if you had any trainee`s at the birth of any of your children was it like they was in the way.. or just gorming at you? i just got so upset about it when i shouldnt of because i said it was ok..

I was a 'trainee' at one point, and my experiences with my maternity rotation are some of my best ones that made me into a great nurse. This is your chance to influence someone to become something great. Your experiences gives them a window to learn about your life, what it means to be pregnant and give birth. I remember going into some women's homes and listening to their stories as they explained what its like to have a newborn at home. I also watched several women give birth. They helped me even during my own birth as well! I didn't really do much either when i was present at births, mostly I was just standing around, watching and making mental notes. But I did assist somewhat- for example I remember assisting a father who was freaking out to calm down. I held up a woman's legs while she pushed. I fetched water, cooled wash cloths took measurements and learned how to do things correctly. THat is the most important thing. If they got the wrong blood pressure and your midwife wasn't taking it as well to compare it to theirs, then you have a problem. If your midwife is doing her job, she will be watching out for you and also training someone who will not only strive to become more like her but also replace her in the workforce when she retires. Good luck with your decision!

I agree with mommy-of-3...you won't even ralize they're there. I had several and didn't really care at that point. BUT...if you don't want them there then just say so. It's YOUR day. And you are going to be rather uncomfortable (to put it mildly). If your midwife isn't understanding about your wishes then she's not being fair to you. Just be honest and don't worry about hurting anyone's feelings! Oh, btw...I saw my trainees cry with joy for me after I was done...so I will do it again in a heartbeat...but that's just me. I hope this helps!

Hi I had a trainee at one of my births and honestly you don't even realize they're in the room with you. There will be doctors/midwives getting things ready, monkeying around with instruments and equipment, and for the most part I think I remember the trainee being very quiet and just assisting the midwife with getting things in order (such as handing them things.)You are so into what is going on with your body the president could be in the room and trust me you wouldn't even care. I wouldn't worry about it, be flattered that they wanted to share the experience with you and know that they won't just be sitting there gawking at you, they want you to feel comfortable too. :)

Well I agree with most of the ladies. When you are in labor you dont care whos there. At first I was embarrased of whos gonna be in there but after feeling like I was dying who cares. I had a trainee nurse in there and it didnt bother me at all. They have to learn their skills from somewhere right. Think of it as you are helping someone get their training done. Or if you really feel you dont want her in there then let them know.

Well, i feel diffrently about it. When i was in laber and any other nurse that would walk in the room not for anything conserning me would realy piss me off! Im in laber and i dont need many ppl seeing me suffer like that! Its private. And i definatly hate students...I will not allow them in the delivery room and i dont care who they are. Thats how i feel...When i went to the hospital they asked me if i minded a student and i was like hell no!!!! So dont worry about telling her you changed your mind...cuz its your body thats gonna be exposed!

I couldn't tell you who was or wasn't in the room during delivery. I just wanted the baby out. I do know my hubby and oldest daughter and my mom were there. All the nurses and midwifes have to train some how. I say let her watch. You won't know she is there. Just make sure you have the option to make her leave if she gets to ya.

All nurses are trainees at some point, just think someone let your midwife do the same thing so she could learn. We all have to start somewhere. I think you should just relax about it and look at it like you are helping her and letting her learn so she can do a demanding job. She will be just as apprehensive as you at times. You can ask her to make herself less obvious in the room at the birth so to make you feel more relaxed. I think it will be easier to handle than you think.

I had a trainee nurse in my room, I didnt have a problem with it. She was very nice and the other nurse was right there beside her so she couldnt do anything wrong. Besides how will new nurses learn unless we let them in.

Seriously you could care less while giving birth who is there. I had my doctor and nurse plus my doctors resident and a student nurse. WHILE I WAS PUSHING some chick came in to take my blood. In my stupor all I could say was "I am busy" she said it must be done SO I KEPT PUSHING as this dumb woman put needles in my arm to withdraw my blood. ALSO when they broke my water they saw some mecconium (baby pooped in the womb) SOOOO when I was nearing the end of the pushing they called a code "GREEN BABY" and a whole team of emergency people were there to take her as soon as she came out because if she inhailed any mecconium it can cause infant pneumonia. I seriously didn't even know any of these people were there until after I delivered. At that point I could care less. My doctor did let the resident check my

I seriously didn't even know any of these people were there until after I delivered. At that point I could care less. My doctor did let the resident check my cervix and so on as i was in labour and I didn't mind that. ALSO my nurse let the student nurse put in a catheter after I had the epidural and she was really slow at it. I was seriously a test subject the entire time through. The only thing that sucked is that my doctor had given me an episiotomy and I tore in two places BUT she was teaching her resident how to sew people back together so it took them over an hour to finish up down there. ALSO the next day before we left my daughter got checked by a pediatrician and she ALSO had a resident with her, my daughter had a slight heart murmur so the doctor used my baby as a tool to help her resident hear a heart murmur. Honestly I didn't mind it at all. I was too happy at this point and during the labour process I had better things to worry about than who could see my crotch. It is ultimately your decision so confide in your doctor if it really makes you uncomfortable

When you give birth, you really aren't thinking about who's in the room, or what they see or what they're doing...believe me :) I bet I had 10 different people in and out of my room and then when I went into the OR, I had more than that. It's just a job to them. I would say let her learn from your pregnancy...she may turn out to be the greatest midwife in the world and you can have her deliver your next baby :)

I had a trainee in the room with my last birth in Nov '07. I found her very helpful actually. When all the nurses were taking their lunch breaks or shift change... she was still there. There are so many people in and out of your room and new faces all the time but to have that one familiar face with you the entire time is nice. That and when i was in labor she was like a second labor couch to me. We got talking over the hours before it got bad, we were the same age, was like we ended up the besst of friends even though at first I wanted to kick her out!! HAHA She was an amazing help thoughout the entire process, being there and knowing what I had been going through that entire time while others were just entering in and trying to catch up to the work and progress of my labor. And besides you get time to get to kow her while shes following you through the entire pregnancy. AND you can either take her help during laor or just let her stand there... your choice, but like I said I enjoyed her company! Best of luck in your choice! I had a great experience
