I took the "Birthing from Within" class at a local midwifery office. It taught me well to visualize my way through the pain. I loved it and our class even provided a free cd of lullaby music which our son loves! This was my first child and I thought that it was worthwhile to do a class that promoted natural childbirth. It depends what kind of labour you are leaning towards- it also went over medication choices and c/s too- but some of the courses run by the hospital or community center's usually follow particular set breathing menu's like lamaze and don't go into other techniques. I found that this class prepared me to feel like a powerful woman, capable of birth. To recognize the animal within me, that I would feel wild and not care what occured during labour as long as my baby came out safely. This is exactly what happened during labour as well.

I had 2 children already and I didn't go to any classes.. It is a personal choice whether you would like to go.. Some people find it very helpful abd others just go with the flow.. Good Luck

If you can get to one go to one you are better knowing what will and could happen, it would be very overwhelming if you had not prepared yourself properly for this special moment.
However I sadly never got to use the techniques as after my waters were broken to advance labour the baby went into distress and I had to have an emerg. c-section, so all of mine have been c-sections. However i still felt prepared for the experience. If you have many to choose from find out what they offer. if you have already had a baby, i would say Pass!

Learn everything you can. Thats the best advice I can give you. I went into my first labor with only the basics and had I known what I do now I could have avoided a painful labour and a csection. Watch the film "The Business of Being Born" its a real eye opener. Then research everything you can and understand what is happening before you go in, you'll be so glad you did.

Definitely worth it! It put both mine and hubby's minds at ease! If you are in any way nervous about birthing, then it's nice to know what all your options are. Also, my class included a tour of the birthing facility, so that was an added bonus.

I agree if it's your first or it's been awhile it's probably a good idea to take one..If it's not really in your budget or you just want to brush up and the facts then I'd read alot....Youtube has some videos on birth that might help.

I asked my dr about birthing classes and he said that it was a waste of money and not necessary. We don't really have the extra cash so we will not be taking one.

If it is your first or your spouses first, I would recommend it. Tho, the one I went to this time around was not as informative. I went mainly for my hubby's benefit this time. The one I went to with my first was much more informative. It lasted a few weeks, a couple hours a night. This last one was a one day 3 hour class. It only lightly touched things. You do learn some important things and it can help you know what to expect.

I would recommend it in order for you and your birthing coach to be informed. My husband and I went and what we felt was useful was learning more about what to expect at each stage of labor, in order to help us both feel more prepared. It was also good to see the c-section video, as I ended up having to have an emergency c-section and so we both kind of knew what was going on. It's also nice to talk with other couples who are expecting around the same time as you are and to share experiences, etc.

well, i would say the difference is actually working together w/ your partner on techniques. i never did get to finish my first set of classes as i went into pre-labor at 32 wks but i am on my 4th baby w/ 2nd partner so i might go to some classes just for him. he never got to go w/ his dd as the mother had emergency c-section way early. i would go for my partner more than for myself

So far I've only been to one birthing class (#2 is tonight). I really did enjoy the first one, even though everything she says I already know because I read so much lol. What's good though is that you get to interact with other pregnant moms to be and stuff.

I think if it is your first pregnancy, the extra info can be helpful. Although, if you have already experienced childbirth before, in my opinion of course, it is not really neccessary.

Here they offered them free with a hospital tour or a small donation... but paying for one and learning things more indepth isn't always for everyone. I didn't take any classes and I did great with my first two. I guess it just depends on how comfortable you are going into this with or without! Best of luck... read the classes descriptions carefully too so you can pick the one right for you!
