Hi, I am 29 weeks pregnant with baby #4. I am craving salt like crazy. My hands, face and feet are starting to puff up, so I know I need to stop, but cannot. Everything I am eating is packed full of salt. Does anyone know how much we are supposed to consume in 1 day. Also, anyone know what may make me crave it so badly??? Thank you!!

I'm not sure, they say what you crave is what ur body needs but too much salt seems like it be very bad and the other girls are right you have to make urself not eat too much cuz you dont wanna swell up and drinks lots of water, does the extra salt make you more thirsty??? I craved meat..had to have red meat, also a doughnut, I wanted a chocolate covered doughnut all the time so what I would do was I only allowed myself to have one when I got done with my doctor appt, I go and get one and it was my lil treat. I would for sure tell ur doctor about the salt thing too, he might have some suggestions and answers you want. good luck on ur pregnancy.

I am a studying dietician and know how vital sodium is for your body but also how we tend to abuse it. you are supposed to consume only 2400 mg per day. The average american consumes about 4000-5000mg/day. Try to keep it around 3000 and drink plenty of water. Eat potassium as that regulates your fluid levels also. If you are craving certain foods then look for lower sodium option of that food. And if you cant pass those up ( we all know cravings over ride everything) then make better choices with your other foods like buying salt free bread, salt free ketchup, frozen/fresh vegetables instead of can or salt free canned. good luck

throw out ALL salty snacks out of your house. That will help you to avoid temptation. If you eat salt, try to drink water with it to flush it out. Or put a handful of chips or whatever into a bowl and limit yourself. I craved fruit towards the end of mine and still really started to swell by week 36. I swelled so much I couldnt get rid of the excess fluid and my right hand went numb. So watch out! Water retention seems to be inevitable in pregnancy. The recommended daily intake (maximum) is 2.3 g or 2,300mg per day for a non-pregnant person. They say that you do not need to change your salt intake while pregnant, but if its causing your bloating then you might want to look at it. You should also be getting that salt from more natural sources. the more processed your food, the more you get. you also then intake a lot of chemicals in foods that are heavily processed. Use this as a rule of thumb for healthy eating for you and your family- the more colour in the food, the better it is for you. If your food is white/or light yellow- then it will have little nutritional value. Starches are transformed into sugar and stored as fat when we eat them, so it is better to consume those in healthy rations. Pick foods that are bright in colour and cook them with steam to preserve as much as the nutrients as possible. THe more heavily you cook your food, the less nutrients are in them. As to why you crave it- your're pregnant!! hee hee. BTW i'm a registered nurse.

I crave really sweet things sometimes and then I end up craving super salty things right afterwards..Like the other girls said,Drink TONS of water..I haven't swollen hardly at all this pregnancy and I've been chugging water like it's going out of style(WATER,not soda or juice even)..Last time I was pregnant and 35 weeks like I am now I was as puffy as could be..The only bad thing about drinking so much water is running to pee even MORE often..lol.
Good luck

Some people crave salt if they eat alot of sweet things. to counter balance it. Make sure you drink alot of water, it will help reduce the puffyness.

They make a lot of sodium free foods and mortans makes low sodium salt also. It's hard when you're pregnant to stay away from the bad stuff :) Hope you figure out a solution...just think, only 11 weeks to go :)

Our bodies will crave fat, sugar and salt while pregnant. 2300 milligrams is the recommended amount. However, a typical American diet ranges from 3000 to 5000 milligrams of sodium. For our bodies to survive, we need about 500 milligrams. A teaspoon of salt is close to the 2400 milligrams.
The salt shaker at the dinner table is NOT the smoking gun. The stealth danger is under the radar in convenience and frozen packages and fast foods. Those prepackaged foods and meals have the highest sodium intake.
