Hello, about 1 month before I became pregnant I started experiencing symptoms of colitis.I was diagnosed with mild colitis early in my pregnancy. For the past 4 mnths of the pregnancy I`ve stopped having any symptoms & seem to be in remission. My doctor recommended a c section delivery just to be safe but, said it was up to me. Wondering what type delivery other women who have or have had colitis would recommend.

As a RN who has recovered from surgery, I would try to give birth naturally. YOur bowel will go to sleep during surgery and it might have problems coming back to life afterwards. You will also experience more severe constipation after surgery and bowel pain. I really don't know why doctors feel that putting you through major surgery is somehow safer than doing things naturally. Your bowel also isn't really involved with delivery and will only affect things if you are constipated before hand- which may put pressure on your bladder and cause bladder rentention, making dilation more difficult. This is easy to fix with a quick in/out catheterization. If you aren't having any health concerns towards the end, its also safer to stay away from medical intervention and drugs. YOu should not mess up a happy body. Surgery is very risky and you can bleed more, have more prolonged recovery and decreased ability to take care of your child. I would NEVER recommend surgery over natural birth- as both an experienced RN and new mom. My friend with IBS had 2 kids with an epidural vaginally and had no problems. Your immune system response controls colitis- have you explored food allergies? ANything you were eating b4 pregnancy that you aren't eating now? Pregnancy is a happy state for your body and that is why most pregnant women with chrons, colitis or other immune disorders actually have their symptoms improve while pregnant. SOme doctors aren't too comfortable with vag births anymore- as c/s controls the situation, putting the control in the hands of the doctor. Vaginal deliveries give you the control. But even if something goes wrong- you tried. I had an emergency c/s and was in surgery VERY fast when there was a problem. SO even if something goes wrong and you need surgery- it can be done quickly. But in the meantime, staying healthy and doing things as natural as possible are the best things for both you and baby. Have a look at my VIP site- lots of good info on delivering baby naturally and safely, tips on breastfeeding and what to pack and recovery from c/s if you decide to have surgery after all.

If your doctor recommended a c-section stating it would be safer I would go with him, he's been doing this for years and the risk of it upsetting your colitis with vaginal delivery wouldn't be good.

I would just try going through a vag delivery and if it ends in c-section at least you tried. I have been told I have colitis symptoms as well which started out as what they though IBS... I had no problem with my last two delivers and think you will do just fine!
