I have only had 1 baby drug free, and it was my 4th, the other 3 I had an epidural. I labored at home w/ baby #4 (I live only 2 min. from hospital), I went shopping while I was having early contractions, came home unloaded groceries, laid down to see if contractions would go away, they did not, so I got in warm bath and would repeat "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength" during each contraction, when i could not stand the bath any longer, I got out and started using my birthing ball, my hubby called the hospital b/c I didn't think I could take the pain any longer and I wanted the epi waiting for me. However, a few minutes later while my hubby was getting children ready to go to a friends b/c mil was not there yet, I started pushing (could not stop) w/ each contraction. We left went to the hospital (w/ children), and I delivered 10 mins later. All of this happened w/ 2 1/2 hrs, the intense part was 1 hr, and the worse was only 1/2 hr. I think that drinking red raspberry leaf tea in my 3rd trimester helped alot, as well as keeping myself distracted through the first of it, and the walking during grocery shopping probably helped alot too, the warm water of the bath helped me to relax and I would try to keep my body from tensing up, and then the birthing ball helped to open my pelvis up allowing the baby to come down. It also helped that I had already had children, but that doesn't always guarantee an easy, fast delivery. Good luck to you!

if your work yourself up that it will be a hard painful experience - then that is what you will get. this is my fourth baby and labor was just fine for me. as you get a contraction, be silent and breathe. tell people not to talk to you, and just focus on relaxing your body. try for a calm atmosphere, have everything ready asap, so that your mind is uncluttered. this is a process, nothing is going to matter but you and that baby. remember once that baby is out of your body you will never feel that child like that again. just enjoy the process as its truly a great experience.

I managed all 3 of my labors with no drugs and I know it sounds stupid but we tend to make it more painful for ourselves because when a contraction starts it's natural for you to tense up, think of it like if your in a car accident you tend to have more injuries if you see it coming and tense up as opposed to not knowing, with my last child I concentrated very hard on trying to stay as loose and calm as possible with each contraction and it really worked wonders. Also being in a tub or shower is much more relaxing, best of luck to you.

Deep breathing! Also, an Epidural! Focusing your thoughts on a beautiful baby in the end! It's not easy, it's very painful (sorry). Keep the communication open with your hubby and nurses, so that everyone is on the same page. Be as honest as possible with the nurses, I tried to hold off too long for my epidural....I ended up waiting an extra hour for the anesthesiologist to get out of another surgery before I could get my epidural. Best wishes, Good luck!

Breathe, breathe, breathe...keep telling yourself that all this is for a beautiful baby. Try not to get tense during contractions and relax and breathe through them. This all worked for me. Good Luck!
