I actually saw an episode of "A BABY STORY" on tlc and the pregnant lady was past due and her Dr gave her a few more days before they would induce. She didn't want that and went home and took some castor oil. And sure enough it worked. But when she told the hospital what she did they got upset with her and said she shouldn't of done that because she didnt know the proper amount to take. It is a method the hospital uses sometimes but I also heard that it makes your BM's very uncomfortable and there can't be anything wworse then being in labor and being on the toilet like that. I know it sucks but I'd just wait it out.

I took castor oil when I was 38 weeks and 2 days preggo with my daughter who was born on April 30, 2007. I started the whole yucky run to the bathroom thing about 4 hours later. Then from the stress of the contractions it caused my water had broken. So off we were to the hospital and I will tell you that it wasn't the best ride in my life as the hospital is about 40 mins away. Needless to say we were stopping off at bathrooms frequently. When I got to the hospital I was only 1cm dialated. About 30 mins later I started hard labor and I had no brakes in between contractions. It was truly the worst labor ever. I was only in labor for three hours so I could not get anything for the pain. On top of all that my daughter went into fetal distress and heartbeat was dropping down to 90 bpm. I would not suggest this method to anyone due to the fact that it is very dangerous for the baby and the mother. If I didn't deliver when I did I would have had a c-section. I have a few friends who did this as well and ended up having the same responce to it as I did. My friend Carrie actually ended up having a c-section and the baby was born with bruises all over him and a low apgar score. Please do not use this method to induce your labor. Try walking, yoga balls, sex. If you use a breast pump or nipple stimulation be careful and take 10 min brakes after stimulating for 15 mins as it can cause very painful and stressful contractions. The best thing you can do is wait until your baby is ready or talk to your DR about inducing you. They normally won't do it until after 39 weeks or your due date.

DONT DO IT! it is causes severe diarehia and abdominal cramps. it is said that the abdominal contractions will cause the uterus to contract but it is not definate. u will be hating life with the effect it has. another way to induce labor (that is used by midwives) is to use a breast pump. that is supposed to release a chemical in the brain that causes labor to begin. the castor oil can also cause fetal distress due to the abdominal cramping and contractions.

the idea is to have a BM, reducing pressure on your bladder which can prevent you from dilating. The good news is you can do the same thing with Benefiber, minus all the discomfort. The idea is just to keep your bowels soft, not making them crazy. The other things you can do- 1. Start Evening primrose oil now. See my VIP site for dose etc. Its a natural prostiglandin- the hormone responsible for dilation.
2. sperm also contains prostiglandins. So.. have sex! the activity will help you dilate as will a good orgasm
3. Go for a walk
4. Open your pelvis on an exercise ball- also good for labor
5. Hang out with new borns- their cries stimulate oxytocin- the hormone responsible for sending you into labor and releasing milk
6. Nipple stimulation also releases oxytocin (good news for hubbie)
7. Ankle Accupressure- google for how-to pics. Feels nice and a good task for husband.
8. Red Raspberry tea
9. Stay hydrated. Frequent trips to bathroom help keep bladder pressure from occuring which in turn puts pressure on cervix.

I heard it usually just causes massive amounts of pooping and vomitting. I leads you to become dehydrated and can cause your baby to have problems too like your baby can have its first bm in utero which can cause breathing problems for your baby. I wouldn't do it.

I tried it with my last one, I don't think I took enough, but I literally sat on the toilet for 3 hours. If you do this, just make sure you are drinking alot of fluids to stay hydrated. Also, I have heard that it causes fetal distress, and I have heard that it doesn't. So, good luck.

i have asked this question recently. It is a laxative stimulant basically and if you want to take it to try to get labor started.. that is your call. I was tempted to do this until I heard that it can cause fetal distress which them causes the baby to have it's first poop.
You usually take 1-2 oz with orange juice or pop. Castor oil cleans out your body by making you have diaherrea. and/or puking.
