ok... I am only 21 weeks and for some reason my right foot and ankle is swelling. It seems to be worse at night too. I really don`t know if it`s to soon for this or what is causing it but it`s weird to me. Is this happening to anyone or has it happened to anyone this early in pregnancy?

Debra - 128 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) Swelling that favors one side can be related to cardiac concerns- but at a young age it is more unlikely. Still- you may want to bring this up with your doctor at the next visit. Swelling is not only about our salt intake. YOu need a certain amount of both sodium and potassium in your body to make your heart keep beating and your cells functioning. Excess sodium binds to water in our cells. If the number of sodium exceeds the water, swelling occurs. therefore, you need to be drinking water throughout the day. If you weigh about 100lbs, you need about 1-2 litres of water. If you are about 150lbs-200 lbs you need 2-3 litres of water each day. I know you will have to pee more and be near a bathroom. This is the sucky part about pregnancy. Do elevate your feet above heart level for at least 20 min 3x a day. Also try a cool water foot bath with epsom or bath salts. The salt in the water will help to draw out your swelling. Foot and leg massage is also helpful if you can get your partner to rub (lightly!) up your leg only, drawing the swelling back towards your heart. If you do have an existing heart condition, speak with your doctor before you start trying leg elevation or massage or drinking too much water. Staying hydrated will also help with preventing painful braxton hicks contractions, which is your uterus contracting in response to dehydration. Love~2008~ - 128 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) YES!!!! =) It has happened to me....I am the Pregnant Queen for swollen feet! LOL Ok so here it goes...why right foot only? Are bodies even when we are not pregnant are slightly to one side (therefore laying heavier on one side). Swollen feet: Summer is near therfore feet always swollen! Summer pregnancies it is always a 99.9% guarantee from what I heard from everyone I asked. 21 weekes: Its not too soon, we are retaining a lot of water and not to mention we have a human inside our bodies. Beware! Too much salt and sugar and not elevating feet enough will cause more swollen not to mention Sunburned Feet!!! I speak from experience me being almost 33 weeks, I decided to be liberating and I went to the air show for Memoraial Day Weekend here in Long Island, NY I was wearing a dress and forgot to put sunblock lotion from my knees down to my feet. Needlesss to say I came home with beat red, Nutty Professor Feet!!! I went to the Dr. that Tues. to see if I had toxemia they said it is unlikely because that genarally happens around 36 weeks. They said because I had such bad sunburn and being pregnant (not to mention are feet have such thin skin). That I had such a bad reaction to the sunburn they swelled up my Dr. was suprised that I didn't have sun poisen and/or blistering. So what to do for you swelled up right foot... ELEVATE BOTH FEET (ABOVE HEART) WHEN SLEEPING AS WELL TRY TO ELEVATE FEET AND OR PILLOW BETWEEN LEGS...TRY SLEEPING ON LEFT SIDE. STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR AND SALT...TRY TOO =) SALT I PRETTY MUCH CAN CHOCOLATE FORGET IT LOL =) IF YOU WOULD LIKE GET A PAN AND THROW SOME MILK IN AND WAIT FOR IT TO BE COOL OR ROOM TEMPARATURE AND DIP AWAY! BAG OF FROZEN VEGETABLES OR ICE PACK ETC 15 MIN ON AND 15 MIN OFF DRINK LOTS OF WATER (ALTHOUGH YOU ARE RETAINING A LOT OF WATER WHICH DOES NOT HELP WITH SWOLLEN FEET AND ANKLES) YOU MUST MUST MUST DRINK ALOT OF WATER SO YOU ARE NOT DEHYDRATED WHICH CAN MAKE YOU HAVE CONTRACTIONS ETC...LABOR! =) AND ELEVATE ELEVATE ELEVATE!!! =) BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK ~APRIL~ AKA PREGNANT QUEEN OF SWOLLEN FEET!! LOL J/K xoxo

Jennifer - 128 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I was earlier than that when I first noticed my foot swollen, Its only my left foot and ankle..FREAked Me out! As long as your blood pressure is good, DONT Worry its perfectly normal just unsightly LOL my dr said, watch your salt intake dont cross your legs, when at home rest with your feet up on pillows, and drink lots and lots of water. Hope this helps, Good luck to you :)

amber325 - 128 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) I was concerned about swelling also. My feet look like balloons. The Dr. said swelling is normal when it is BOTH appendages at the same time, not just one or the other. I would ask the Dr. b/c it may be something causeing it.
