It's not uncommon. In fact they often wait until about the 13wk. Was there a particular reason you had an early u/s for your first? They useually only do early ones if there is a question of viability or dates. If your progressing well then waiting is normal.

This is my first pregnancy and i had my first scan at twelve weeks so totally normal. This is purely a calculation scan and to see if th epregnancy is viable - as much as thats not nice to hear! Dont worry 12 week scan is totally normal x x x

I had mine at 8 weeks I havent heard of them waiting until 12 weeks. Is that just how your monthly appt fell? I had to wait until week 23 for my second u/s. That stunk because I really wanted to find out the sex of the baby like everyone else at or around 18 weeks.

Yeah for me here in Northern Canada. It all depends on what you country or prov. has as a normal. I didn't get my first appointment 'till 12 weeks and then I didn't get my u/s 'till 19+ weeks. When I asked to see my doc about being prego I was refused a first prenatal until I was 12 weeks, they confirmed it for me but that was all they would do. I think it's fair in a way because things could go wrong before then, and they can't stop that from happening. It is better, I guess, to have room for people that really need to get in because they are really sick. If you have no trouble then there isn't much else they can really say. A heart beat is hard to see so early anyway. I've been prego three times and lost then middle one and they have never done an u/s so early, only to confirm they embryo wasn't developing. So good luck and try not to worry thing should be just fine:)

I had my first u/s between 9 and 10 weeks to confirm the pregnancy and make sure there was a heart beat. So, it may seem a little long but I don't think its wrong to wait until 12 weeks. Maybe they do it that way because thats when the risk of miscarriage goes down? Who knows, docs everywhere are different!

I only had one ultrasound the entire pregnancy at 24 weeks. It sucked.

i had one at 5 weeks too, but it was only to date the pregnancy. There is no information about how good or not good it is to expose the fetus to too much diagnostic tests-particularly ultrasounds. Unless you are a high risk pregnancy, the only mandatory ultrasound should occur at or around 20 weeks. Other u/s ordered though nice to see your baby swimming around, are not necessary and women should consider that these extra scans may do more harm to their baby than good.

drs usually only get you to have an u/s so early because you were un aware of the EDD, like if you had a wonky AF and then turned out pregy right after and what not

Usually they just do 1 ultrasound at around 20wks but I guess it depends on the doctor or insurance you have. I dont think its necessary to get one as early as 5 or 6 wks. Theres not much to see then. I know you get a number of ultrasounds when you're high risk but other than that I guess its up to the doctor you have.

well to be honest, theres no reason for an ultrasound at either stage unless you're considered high risk or you need to date the pregnancy. my first pregnancy i went from start to finish with one ultrasound at 19 weeks. thats the only one that is "mandatory". this is my second pregnancy and i had an ultrasound at 7 weeks to date the pregnancy because ididnt know when my last period had started. i then had my 19 week ultrasound but they couldnt get a god enough ciew of the heart so i went back at 22 weeks. ive had 3 so far. i have no more booked, but we might pay to have the 3d ultrasound done. if theres no medical reason for the ultrasound before 19 weeks other than the reasons i mentioned so its basically for your peace of mind and to monitor. the baby will grow well without an ultrasound done at any point, like they did for thousands of years before ultrasounds so dont be concerned that you're only getting one at 12 weeks.
