Everyone talks about this - its a common misconception as i found out when i went to the salon a few weeks ago. I thought you could have only vegetable dye when pregnant but that is also wrong! You can dye your hair but my colourist advised me due to hormonal changes and itchings that can occur throughout pregnancy to have a colour test even if your used to dying your hair just to be on the safe side. x x

I first went to my doctor when I was 5 weeks pregnant. I asked this question as I have coloured hair and highlights. He replied saying "put it this way, if you were my wife, I wouldn't tell you to stop dying your hair". He said it is a load of rubbish and to carry on doing it. Said there are no studies to suggest otherwise. I have been dying my hair since. I agree with a previous post though, I had my highlights done at 6 weeks and they turned a yellow colour. This was due to the change in hormones. All is fine now. (I am 19 weeks).x

Thats what I learned in Cosmetology school. Wait til after the first trimester and be in a well ventilated area. Like everyone has said, its the fumes & the smell that's the problem.

No..Since the scalp is a very absorptive surface, small amounts of chemicals do get into the bloodstream when you dye your hair. In animal studies, hair chemicals have been linked to birth defects.

YES, hair dye is completely safe. Don't listen to anyone who says it's not. however. the dye may take funny due to pregnancy hormones, and it is best to wait til your in or past week 12 before doing anything like that. A SemiPermanent is ok. those generally don't have ammonia in them. And honestly... some people will try to tell you it's not safe but they're idiots. I got my hair done with streaks and some woman at the salon said "it's not safe because the dye gets into your blood stream then to the baby.. and I know because I'm a nurse". Well, the woman was an IDIOT because the bleach only went on my HAIR not my scalp, and the lady obviously didn't know what she was talking about. my doctor thought it was HILARIOUS.

I'm having mine done for the second time during my pregnancy in a few days. I had it done at 12 weeks, and I'll be 22 weeks when it's done next. I had full head of foils rather than have the dye touch my scalp. I used to dye it myself, but now have a salon do it rather than breathe in the harmful fumes myself.
Wait out your first trimester to have it done. It hasn't been proven unsafe for later in pregnancy, but the fumes can be pretty harsh, and it's always best to air on the side of caution about letting chemicals be in contact with your body. Go to a well ventilated salon, make sure that your hairdresser knows your pregnant, and preferably opt for foils rather than direct scalp contact.

Im pregnant with numbers 4 & 5 and I have always had my hair coloured throughout all my pregnancys. Some pregnancies colour doesnt last as long but others there is no difference. I say go get it done. Ya gotta feel good about ya self!!

hi i was unsure about this as well but when waiting to c mw i picked up a mag called youre pregnant the answer in the mag is theres no reason why this would be risky to you or your baby, hair colourant penetrates the hair, buut not the scalp. Looking and feeling good is important to your well being in pregnancy. so do carry on with your colours!

Hi! I'm the same way. I actually dye my hair with blonde highlights every 3 months and I was passed those 3 months.. actually 4... when I found out I was pregnant! My doctor told me to wait at least until the first three months go by. Then, do get highlights that don't touch my scalp. The problem is not so much the highlights... but the smell. That smell is really poison for your baby. You can also try organic, natural hair coloring kits! I might ask my beautician to actually use that on me to be more on the safe side. :)
