i had my baby 5 weeks ago and have had 3 periods of increased bleeding a week or 2 apart from each other. the fist 2 times i also passed large clots, but the last time was just heavy bleeding (soaking more than 1 pad in an hour). i went to the doctor who put me on a weeks course of antibiotics incase of infection. i finished the antibiotics yesterday and am still having a bright red bleeding (this is sometimes a thicker dischargey blood), but just a normal amount. i`m just scared the heavy bleeding could start again though as it`s usually a week or 2 apart and worried there is placenta left inside. does anyone know if i would have continual heavy bleeding if this was the case? thanks for any help you may have

every one is different, the standard here is that if you are still bleeding and have not stoped from birth to 7 weeks postpartum then they will try and fugure out why....
it all confuses me a bit to be honest. i bleed very heavily even just for a period, they told me that you should bleed no heavier than your heaviest menstral flow, so i didnt worry about it. but i was starting to get nervous when it had been 6 weeks after the birth of my son and i was still bleading stron as ever, then just before the 7 week mark it stopped for 3 days then was on again for another 7 as i had gotten an AF.
if you still had a part of anything forighn in your uterous you would be emensly sick by now, i seriously dont think its that.

the bleeding you should be having now should only be light red/pink or even brown. That's considered 'normal' I had a c/s so my bleeding was shorter. I had continuous bleeding over 6 weeks but the first week was heavier and the rest i was changing my pad once a day. The question is, what were you doing activity wise when your bleeding occured? for the first 6 weeks you should be taking it easy. walking only short distances and lifting nothing heavier than the weight of your newborn. If you are doing more, your bleeding can and will get heavier as your uterus doesn't contract. Are you breastfeeding? the oxytocin released during let down should also be contracting the uterus down and halting the bleeding. Also did your doc check your vit K? or did you get this after birth? Vit K is a clotting factor and should have been given to you right after birth via an injection into your hip or leg or upper arm. He should also check your iron and hgb levels to make sure you are not going anemic. I hope this helps! message me if you want, i'm an RN.
