I hope this is not a silly question. I`m contemplating whether I should breastfeed or not. I tried with my daughter 14 years ago and I guess when my milk came in I became engorged and it hurt so bad that I didn`t want nobody near them. Needless to say, breastfeeding didn`t work. And here I am again and actually considering it. My question is what all do I need to be prepared? Does everyone have to use a pump or is it just if you spend time away from the baby? Please leave comments on my page. Thank you.

if you get engorged, cabbage leaves are soooooo lovely. this is an old trick, but believe me it works! you dont need much to breastfeed, but get out some library books on the subject, they have pictures of how to get baby positioned properly, as improper positioning can make baby latch on wrongly, which is what causes heaps of pain. make sure you get breast pads, as your boobs can leak badly in the beginning. if you do buy a pump, in the begining, you cna express out a little of the milk before you feed, this will soften the nipple and make it easier for baby to latch on, and make it less painful for you too. it may hurt in the beginning, after all breast feeding is a learned skill, you do need some practice before you become really 'good' at it, but if you get some support, it will be so much easier

All I had was me, nursing pads, and nursing bras. I was given my Sister in law's pump, but I was grossed out at the thought of using it. I tried twice, but it didn't work anyway, no suction. get LOTS of pads, bc once my milk came in, I had enough milk for the entire ward. It would not slow down, and my baby didn't eat much, and did stay on long. I guess my body just knew what to do. If you get engorged try expressing in the shower, or ice packs, or a tight bra. hope this helps.

Breastfeeding is great! it's so natural, you dont need anything. maybe eventually you could get a breast pump, but i would wait till you see how it's going(they're expensive) Also, you were so young the first time around, maybe you didn't know how wonderful it is for you and your baby, you should try it. i almost gave up on nursing in the beginning cause it was alot of work! he would'nt latch on, he was hungry, once he learned to latch on correctly, he wanted to nurse 24/7! but eventually after maybe 1 1/2 months it is so easy and my baby loves nursing, it is so comforting to him! Also, if your nursing you shouln't be engorged if your baby is eating every couple hours. good luck

I did not buy any bottles or pump and milk when I was breastfeeding your body should naturally regulate after a few days from when your milk comes in, I was really passionate about breastfeeding so I just bought some nursing bras and pads I also bought a cream calle Kamilosan which has chamomile in it which can help soothe cracked nipples when they got really sore I did invest in some nipple sheilds (God Send) Just to give them time to recover I breast fed till 6 months without having to substitute or express so keep at it x x x Just remember though some people cant feed this way for medical reasons so if this happens dont give yourself a hard time over it as long as the baby is happy x

I think that Spike did a wonderful job of answering your questions. I'd just add that you might want a couple of bottles for the expressed breast-milk.

id recomend getting a good pump they come in handy, even if you are allways going to be there to feed the baby, it was great to be able to express a feed or two so the my husband could do the odd night feed an dlet me sleep for longer than 3 hours at a time. i also found the pump usefull when i was establishing feeds, just express a little at the end of every feed till nothing more comes out, it helps make more milk to satisfy baby longer and also does wonders in preventing mastitis. also if your boobs get realy sore like mine did it was helpfull to just express a little before trying to feed Luka that way it didnt hurt me so much and he didnt drown in milk. apart from a pump you will need at least 2 maternity bras, disposible or washable breast pads, if you can find them rite aid makes disposible cooling sheilds they are not expensive and they are brilliant for when your milk comes in or for weaning, as they are so cool against your sore nipples and boobs and are still compleatly safe for baby leaving no qhemicals or anything on the skin. apart from that id get about 4 bottles (get the same brand as the pump for conveinience) just to store milk in or so someone can give the baby a feed and let you sleep in a bit.
good luck this time around.
