I`m pregnant and still nursing my 6 month old daughter. I have noticed she doesn`t seem to be getting as much milk when she eats and when she went to her 6 month check-up she hadn`t gained very much weight. I`ve had to suppliment with formula, which is expensive. I`d really like to keep nursing as long as I can. If anyone has any other suggestions I`m all ears. Thanks ladies!

kater - 98 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) i definitely agree about staying hydrated. i found that i didnt have much milk on the days when i didnt drink enough water. im not a big drinker -water, i mean :) so i really had to push myself to drink enough. i have heard of dandelion root for increasing supply, but ive never tried it

Debra - 98 days ago Rating: 0 (0 votes) http://www.thecradle.com/tryingtoconceive/herbsandpregnancy this website lists this root for infertility- not for helping with milk supply. I've heard of taking the herb fenugreek to help with milk supply. My first question though is many calories are you taking in while pregnant? If you were just pregnant you need to be consumming 400 additional calories. While breastfeeding another 300 on top of the pregnancy diet. I would add another 300-400 calories on that for being pregnant and breastfeeding at the same time. If she's wetting her diapers, she is drinking enough. You can only pump what is stored in your breast and your breasts only store 1/3 of the milk at a time. The rest is made when your baby goes to drink, so you can never pump as much as your baby drinks. Additionally, at 6 months you should have started supplementing the milk diet with food. Baby should start on 1 tsp of formula a day and increase it to 1tsp-4 tbsp 1-2 times daily. Every few days introduce a new food. Yams or sweet potatoe are good starters. THat will help your 6 month old to gains some weight. YOur child's weight gain does taper off at this point however, so you can keep that in mind as well. It should however steadily gain a bit each month. I worry that you are loosing a lot of iron and calcium being pregnant and feeding at the same time. I hope you are on supplements for both. Because if you aren't, the demands of both your babies will leach the calcium from your enamel of your teeth and your bones. http://www.breastfeed.com/articles/breastfeeding-your-toddler/breastfeeding-during-pregnancy-2638/ On top of making sure you are getting the nutrition needed to support the life of 3 people, you need to stay hydrated for 3! The above site mentions that you need to drink 12-14 cups of water per day. Staying hydrated means you will avoid risking early labor and will continue to produce enough milk. During pregnancy and breastfeeding for 1 i recommend women drink 2-3 L of water per day or 1/2-3/4 gallon. So for being both pregnant and breastfeeding you need to minimally be drinking 3 L of water (12 cups). I hope this helps!
