I agree that you probably shouldn't take it...not that you're planning on it, but it's not a sure fire way to really start labor. Sometimes, it'll just give you diarrhea and who wants to deal with that?! Patience is the key. As hard as it is when you're so ready to see your baby, you just have to wait it out until they're ready to make their appearance.

Castor oil is essentially a really strong laxative. The labor contractions it induces can elevate fetal heart rate and cause extreme distress. It has frequently been linked to an increased risk of c/s delivery (and emergency ones to boot). I would not take it. Instead, keep your bowels soft in the last tri by taking benefiber and staying hydrated. The more consipated you are, the more pressure is on you bladder which in turn compresses your cervix and prevents dilation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_oil

Castor oil is this edible oil that old timers used as a remedy for everything, especially here in the south. If you get sick, drink castor oil. If your kids misbehave, give them castor oil. It stops all sorts of things, and in the case of pregnancy, it supposedly starts labor. It starts the bowels moving, flushing the system of all illness (or misbehavior). It's really gross and can be used as a politically correct torturing device for unruly children or whiny hypocondriacs.

I have a friend who took it to bring on labor, she never said anything to her Dr., and then when it was almost time to push...diarreaha!!! Made a huge mess, and they had to keep spraying air deodorizer. She was sooo embarresed! She didn't do it with her last one.

I also thought of the car oil lol but I looked it up and its a vegetable oil. They take it to bring on labor but it is also found to be dangerous to the baby so I would never risk that. I would just let baby come when ready.
