My son has taken to biting me at the end of each side while nursing to signal to me that he`s done. He`s 7 months old. Then he smiles at me. He has almost 4 teeth, 2 on top and 2 on bottom and its getting more painful. Any suggestions for stopping this behaviour would be greatly appreciated! Currently I`m saying NO! and putting my boob away. I`ve also tried squishing his face into my breast to stop the bite, but nothing has worked. I don`t want to start formula feeding him now at this late in the game as I`d rather just switch to cow`s milk when he can handle it. Nursing is so much cheaper than formula and I`ve never had a problem until now. HELP!

Thanks! I'll try putting him on the floor! I'm pretty sure he just really likes seeing my reaction. I don't want to pump as it just seems to take forever. My pump is fine if I'm really engorged, otherwise I find it difficult to sit around with the pump. (my boy eats in 5-10 min- both sides) so pumping takes considerably longer.

I had this problem with each of my children at the same age, and tried everything to stop the biting (without luck). Other nursing friends of mine said that the children quite enjoy the reaction they get after they bite, watching Mom leap a mile in her seat and such. My solution to get a little longer out of the nursing experience was to start pumping and giving the breast milk in a bottle. My kids got the benefits of nursing but I wasn't getting bitten! Not as ideal as teaching the baby not to bite, this I realize, but I couldn't come up with a better alternative... at 7 months, my kids were starting to experiment with sippy cups, too, so it seemed like a good alternative in that they were learning a new skill at the same time.

I agree with babybean and kater. I told my daughter no and put her down. She did cry a bit when I would put her down but she quickly realized why she was being removed from the breast and stopped biting. Just be consistent with it no matter where you are when he does it, say no and remove him from the breast and put him down. It worked well for me. I hope you are able to work it out soon cause I know how much it hurts! Good Luck!

I agree with the bottle idea.

Why not just exclusively express and give him the bottle? This will eliminate him doing it at all.

babys at this age just love to get a reaction from you-im sure you know this already...lol. i would take all the fun out of it for him, by doing what you do now by saying 'no' then as the babybean suggested, putting him down with no further comment and walking away, with no eye contact after the initial 'no'. my daughter did this too at around the same age, and this seemed to work pretty well. good luck!

Hi there my daughter did this and would then hang on to my nipple which was painful. My mum told me to put her on the floor straight away when she did it because they don't like that. It worked a treat and i only had to do it a few times. Hope this helps x
